A CDP1802 microprocessor based stand-alone system (target system) has been designed to control a two-color pyrometer (TCP) system remotely and to process the temperature information from a simulated magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) test facility, at Mississippi State University. The analog signals from two pyrometer detectors are digitized and the temperature and emissivity of the surface are computed. The results are displayed on a 20-column printer. Data at various emissivity settings are collected with the help of a stepper motor. The measurements may be done individually or in a continuous mode. A sequence of events may be programmed into the system through a 4×4 key matrix. Software has been developed in FORTH, a highly structured language. The system design and development has been accomplished through stepwise refinement.

The use of a video display terminal (VDT) with "block mode" option can provide a natural transition from paper forms. The interaction of a user with a VDT-form is outlined in relation to a patient's data and the functions of data entry, display, update, and deletion. The invocation of a function is kept simple with the use of abreviations as command words and the requirement of a command word as the first element sent to the computer. The strong points include: 1) a simple approach for the user, 2) a process can be aborted at any point, and 3) functions that can be used are displayed at all times. The weak points are: 1) software interface problems and 2) terminal cost. Block mode is discussed in relation to a modular approach and a distributive system.

The decomposition encoding of an n-bit vector V is an approach to the problem of how best to encode a bit vector under the constraints that this vector be encoded into blocks of t bits, and that access time for each bit of the original vector be constant, i.e. "random access." Essential to the method is the decomposition of N--the indexing set for V--by means of an injection (h1,h2): N --> R1 x R2 : m │--> (h1(m),h2(m)). Decoding involves some simply computed function f(F1[h1(m);],F2[h2(m);]). The emphasis in this paper is upon compact encodings for static vectors. For one choice of f--XOR decomposition encoding--it is shown by linear algebraic techniques that a decomposition encoding requiring the minimal t for a given (h1,h2) pair can be determined. Of more practical interest is minimization of the total number of bits in the encoding for all possible injections (h1,h2). Experimental results using a number of easily computed (h1,h2) pairs show that compactions to one half of the ordinary packed representation can be achieved via decomposition encoding for relatively sparse bit vectors.
