Evaluations of human emotional state & affective computing to support job-seekers

The act of re-engaging the unemployed into work is a crucial policy agenda and the main task of employment agencies. However, the means of accomplishing this task is challenging because the employment agencies have not helped much in given effective job search advice to job seekers in applying to the right vacancy. In recent times, behavioral economics research has revealed that people make systematic mistakes in decision-making. Most times job seekers fail in predictable ways not because they lack knowledge, practice, or willingness, but because they are limited in the way, they make decisions: "forces" that influence them (e.g., emotions, relativity, social norms, etc) trick the brains. However, this is not a helpless situation. Once the job seekers understand when and where they might make erroneous decisions in applying to the right vacancies. The goal of this research is to develop and compare different technological interventions and measure long-term their ability to provoke positive changes in the life of the users in applying for the right vacancies. The researchers intend to recruit 70 subjects (20-40 years) and to make use of a pre-assessment tool such as questionnaires, interact, and conduct surveys and interviews to administer to selected job seekers communities in order to measure their level of cognitive abilities and their link to human stress in the context of applying to the right vacancy. The researchers intend to collect three types of data from the selected subjects. The data include: (a) demographic data, (b) psychological data, which capture a subject's general susceptibility to stress and (c) self-report data, on the subject's stress and workload levels. Then, Ecological Momentarily Intervention (EMI) is use to examine how the users can be intervened with right context, encouragement, or support in the right moment in order to reduce their burden and increase intervention personalization in applying for the right vacancy.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) systems are more likely to be successful if tailored to different user groups. However, in Africa, research on how internet experience (IE) and web design (WD) influence the perception of mobile websites is scarce. To bridge this gap, we conducted an empirical study among 191 participants from West Africa to investigate the influence of IE and WD on users' perception of mobile websites and preferences. We based our study on four different mobile website designs in the tourism domain as a case study. The results of our analysis show that IE negatively influences the perception of aesthetics and credibility, with high-experience (HE) users being more critical of mobile websites than low-experience (LE) users overall. More specifically, LE users prefer highly colorful website design to minimalist website design. In contrast, HE users prefer minimalist website design to highly colorful website design. Moreover, both user groups prefer grid-style mobile website design to list-style mobile website design. These findings can be leveraged by HCI designers to tailor mobile websites to both user groups in West Africa.

African users are continuously using different technologies, in terms of applications, devices and services. Most of the technologies are developed in foreign countries and deployed in Africa for use. Despite the current technologies having enhanced and transformed some services, there are cases where some devices have been critisised. We plan to have a workshop on under-standing how African users would like technologies to be designed for them. We are particularly focusing on technologies that have had some loss of life during and after use in Africa. One such is the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) when users are making banking transactions. The workshop intends to unpack current challenges facing users on technologies i.e ATMs and how African culture could transform the current design.

The participatory design, fabrication and customization of assistive technology can be an empowering experience for users with disabilities and their caregivers and teachers. These inherently creative activities can bring together multiple stakeholders and facilitate ongoing dialogues among them. We utilized a Do-It-Yourself assistive technology (DIY-AT) prototyping platform in a series of community-building activities to investigate the possibilities and challenges of maker approaches to the design and development of assistive technology in Western Kenya. We engaged a diverse group of stakeholders, including teachers, university students and representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations working with people with disabilities. The results underline the importance of creating supportive local infrastructures, incorporating affordances for end-user technology appropriation, and identifying and engaging multiple stakeholders.

Namibia praises itself as multi-cultural and united country with a wide variety of ethnicities. Most tribes take pride in their traditions, cultural values and practices. Based on historical legacies, differences amongst tribes can still be observed. While some are well positioned in the socio-political landscape others are marginalized, such as the San communities. Urban San youth caught between tradition and modernity, ethnicity and nationality, rural and urban contexts are touched at many social levels affecting their identity and well-being. In this paper, we present an inclusive innovation design collaboration between urban San youth and academic design researchers. Inspired by the results of self-reflections through collages, mental contrasting and cultural probes, complemented by the exploration of emerging technologies and design we have conceptualized and co-created a unique innovation, namely individual augmented reality accessories to support social well-being. We frame the design for well-being within the Self-Determination Theory, promoting autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Upon our approach to inclusive innovation design we reflect on the mixed team effort, positioning our decisions within contentious discourses and methodological thoughts.

Online social networks risks to organisations: a literature review
Talitakuum A. T. Ekandjo, H. Jazri, Anicia N. Peters
The use of online social networks (OSNs) is increasing exponentially - leading to soaring risks for organisations. Organisations need to regulate employees' use of OSNs to minimise the impacts of OSNs related threats. The aim of this paper is to identify organisational security risks emanating from the use of OSNs by employees. A review and analysis of existing literature on OSNs was done to develop a taxonomy of OSNs' organisational risks. The review revealed that OSNs and employees are the current weakest security links in organisations and engender dreadful information security risks. In addressing OSNs security threats, there are challenges that organisations might encounter. For organisations to implement effective security management programs, it is recommended that future research should look at identifying critical success and failure factors for implementing OSNs security control mechanisms.

People's primary school interactive tech library exhibition

Libraries have played a fundamental role in nurturing a reading culture. However, with an observable trend of children's and young adult's decreasing interest in reading, the libraries of today do need a fundamental reconceptualization in order to attract visitors. Examples from elsewhere have shown that libraries integrating physical activities, with imaginative spaces and mindful technologies attract and retain crowds. In the absence of such libraries in Namibian schools, we have launched into an interactive tech library design journey with a Namibian government school. Our goal is to design and create technologies and spaces that contribute to an enhanced reading experiences for children. Over a period of four months we have held weekly participatory design meetings with the learners from People's Primary School and co-designed imaginative spaces and technologies. At the conference we will re-create parts of the designed library spaces for visitors to experience the technology prototypes within an artistic set up.

We propose a prototype of a Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) application, based around the prehistoric rock art within the Brandberg mountain. This prototype experience forms part of the Digital Humanities Project for Namibia that features an augmented experience aimed at promoting digitally archived information on the rock art found within the Mountain. Content that make up the experience will be sourced from an existing digital archive of Harald Pager's field journal to form part of the interactivity.
