As the second-largest economy in the world, China’s investment profile presents an opportunity to deliver considerable solutions to global challenges, including staggeringly large infrastructure gaps. By integrating critical environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, responsible investment ensures both reliable returns and global growth that will last. While China is just beginning to develop their responsible investment sector, the state-driven model of financing employed must be considered to effectively achieve domestic prioritization of these globally-recognized criteria. Without proper adoption of environmental, social, and governance criteria, the risk of environmental, human, and capital costs is overwhelming. Setting China’s growth on the track of stability will take a coordinated effort by policy and private actors championing responsible investment in the country as well as global stakeholders and policy professionals.

The emerging artificial intelligence (AI) industry presents an enormous economic opportunity for Canada. However, many ethical questions remain unresolved about the application of these technologies and their social impacts. Despite these challenges, AI will continue to be developed and Canada cannot risk missing out on the benefits of the fourth industrial revolution. This article argues that Canada must continue to build upon its strong policies for the sector to foster the development of ethical domestic AI enterprises and offers several recommendations for policymakers.

Rising income inequality is a pressing political issue in Canada and internationally. Since the 1980s, the evolution of the global economy and shifting tax policy frameworks have generated a steep rise in inequality characterized by runaway incomes at the very top of the spectrum and a growing role played by capital income. Given that tax policy is one of the primary tools available for governments to structure income distribution, reform is needed. However, tax policy solutions to rising inequality must address the uncertainty surrounding the ability of governments to take effective action in a globalized world economy. This policy brief puts forward viable reforms. The Canadian federal government can mitigate income inequality domestically through targeted corporate and personal income tax reforms and a strengthened enforcement regime.

This article examines how various stakeholders, including national governments, animal welfare organizations, and Indigenous groups, employed different communication tactics and methods to advocate for their positions regarding Regulation 1007/2009. Deconstructing the European Union’s ban on seal products and how it came into effect provides clarity on these communication tactics and their impact on the policy. This analysis focuses on the economic and cultural consequences of the ban in the Inuit Nunangat, and how Inuit communities have created responsive communication strategies to articulate their perspectives. The European Parliament ultimately limited its focus to animal rights and welfare, neglecting to sufficiently consider the evidence-based and scientific reporting provided by the European Commission, Norway, Canada, and Inuit communities.
