In this study, we reviewed the medical records of 14 patients who had visited our institution during the past seven years and had been diagnosed as tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis. Three of 14 patients were males and others were females. Only two patients had past histories of pulmonary tuberculosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy specimens in 13 patients and the method of therapeutic diagnosis was adapted to one patient.Statistical reports by WHO showed that the incidence of tuberculous disease in Japan is relatively higher than those in other countries and the number of patients with tuberculous disease shows a gradual increase. Based on those reports, tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis should be considered when examining neck mass.

Although the pathogenesis of idiopathic facial palsy remains to be clarified, ischemia is thought to be one of the most probable factors. The intratemporal portion of the facial nerve receives its blood supply from three major sources: the internal auditory artery, the petrosal branch of the middle meningeal artery and the stylomastoid artery. The petrosal branch of the middle meningeal artery, the so-called petrosal artery, provides the main arterial supply to the geniculate ganglion, where the vascularity is much richer than elsewhere in the course of the facial nerve. We confirmed in a previous experiment that interruption of the petrosal artery resulted in a marked decrease in the facial nerve blood flow at the geniculate ganglion. This ischemic change could cause functional disorders in the facial nerve. In the present study the petrosal artery of the guinea pigs was transected, and the motor function and electrophysiological and histologic changes of the facial nerve was investigated. 1) Interruption of the petrosal artery produced facial palsy within 3 days in 52.6% of the guinea pigs. 2) Antidromically evoked facial nerve responses and histological findings suggested that facial palsy was caused by nerve conduction block due to edema of the nerve distal to the geniculate ganglion.

One-hundred and eight cases of major salivary gland tumors and allied conditions treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Mie University Hospital were reviewed according to the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO) and analyzed in terms of mode of presentation, diagnostic technique, treatment and end results. It was shown that the commonly involved salivary gland was the parotid gland and the most prevalent tumor was pleomorphic adenoma. Of the 108 cases, 81 were parotid tumor cases, and the ratio of benign to malignant tumors was 2.37:1. The remaining cases were tumors of submandibular and sublingual gland origin, and the ratio of benign to malignant was 1.71:1.We have principally performed enucleation surgery for all the benign parotid tumors, except six cases in which either superficial lobectomy or total lobectomy was performed. For malignant parotid tumors, enucleation surgery was performed in 9 cases, superficial lobectomy in two cases and total lobectomy in 10 cases. Of the above 21 cases, irradiation was added in 4 cases, combination therapy of irradiation and chemotherapy was administered in 11 cases. For all the cases of the tumor of the submandibular gland or sublingual gland, total extirpation of the gland with the tumor was performed. In accordance with the proposal of the American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting (1975), staging of 17 cases with malignant parotid tumors, which were followed more than one year, was determined. The five-year survival rate according to the stage was found to be 100% for T1N0M0, 75% for T2N0M0, 0% for T3N0M0, 0% for T3N1M0 and 0% for T3N1M1.The literature on new diagnostic procedures, treatment and prognosis was reviewed.
