The impact of circular economy
Pub Date : 2019-08-30 DOI: 10.4337/9781788112574.00030
Dionne Ewen, K. Maas, Helen Toxopeus
There is worldwide growing attention for the shift towards a circular economy. The focus shifted from how innovation in business models could lead to more profit towards how innovation in business models may solve societal problems and hence contribute to a sustainable economy and society. Although positive ecological and social impact is embodied in the definition and promise of the circular economy, we know little about what type of impact circular enterprises expect to make, whether they measure their impact and use this to adjust their strategy where necessary. This leads us to the following research question: what is the expected impact of different types of circular innovation for firms, and how can firms measure this impact? Based on different case studies, different circular innovation strategies and their expected impact are identified and a framework is developed that can help firms to identify and measure their expected impact.

The role of users in sustainable innovation
Pub Date : 2019-08-30 DOI: 10.4337/9781788112574.00022

The adoption of sustainable innovations is a highly dynamic process with uncertain outcomes. In order for the sustainability promises to materialize, users will play a key role as they have to embed these innovations in their daily practices and create (more) sustainable lifestyles. We present a typology of user roles in sustainable innovation: users can be active or passive, contribute as individual or collective, or act as enable or barrier. This typology presents a balanced and symmetric overview of all possible user roles, proposed in the literature. We also present and comment on a typology of positive user roles in sustainability transitions, proposed by Schot et al. This approach offers a long-term perspective on user roles, complementary to what is usually done in innovation studies; it credits users with more (distributed) agency. It also helps to identify new options for interventions in sustainable innovation and transition processes.

Taxonomy and dimensions of eco-innovation from a resource-based perspective

The need for a sustainability transition is undisputed. Ecological innovation (eco-innovation) is a possible mechanism with which to reach a fully sustainable economy and society. Several types of eco-innovation exist, that is, end-of-pipe, efficiency or effectiveness related. While all contribute to the sustainability transition, they have different impacts, ranging from local optimization to systemic redesign, that is, for the circular economy. In that sense, past research has brought forward many definitions and conceptualizations. The aim of this chapter is to go a step further and contribute to a universal taxonomy by characterizing eco-innovations departing from the resource-based view of the firm. Therefore, four dimensions of eco-innovations are contrasted against six groups of firm resources. It is found that, depending on eco-innovation types and dimensions, the respective antecedents are different, that is, certain resources facilitate local optimization while systemic eco-innovations are the result of cooperation (joint efforts and resource bases) of several innovators. This chapter provides a precise conceptualization of the interaction between firm resources and eco-innovations.

Innovation and ecological impact: the case of automobility
Pub Date : 2019-08-30 DOI: 10.4337/9781788112574.00026
P. Wells
This chapter is concerned with innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry. It argues that growth in car ownership and use has overwhelmed incremental performance improvements in the efficiency of cars achieved through technological innovation. Consequently, deep and enduring reductions in carbon emissions and other ecological burdens are only likely if radical technical change is accompanied by and enabled through fundamental business model innovation which transforms the relationship between production and consumption in the realm of automobility. The chapter argues that the automotive industry is at the precipice of just such a transformation but that resistance and inertia in multiple aspects of the automobility system still act to retard the pace of change. Disruptive new entrants have also failed to destabilize the industry. Overall, a greater sense of policy urgency is needed along with a willingness to accept short-term economic losses as the industry transforms.
