Policy mixes for sustainable innovation: conceptual considerations and empirical insights 可持续创新的政策组合:概念考虑和实证见解

This chapter provides an overview of advances in conceptual thinking and empirical applications addressing policy mixes for sustainable innovation. It starts by providing an overview of ‘instrument mix’ studies focusing on interacting instruments aimed at achieving sustainable innovation. It then covers broader ‘policy mix’ conceptualizations which better reflect the complexity of real-world policy mixes for sustainable innovation. These broader conceptualizations encompass but go beyond instrument mixes by also paying dedicated attention to policy strategies, policy processes and policy mix characteristics. While such a broader policy mix concept has been developed in the context of sustainable innovation, it may also inform transformative innovation policy in the context of other grand societal challenges. The chapter also discusses research on the co-evolution of policy mixes and sustainable innovation, highlighting the importance of a dynamic approach to policy mix research. The chapter closes with a discussion o research implications.

Sustainable innovation research methods 可持续创新研究方法

With the shift in focus of innovation policy goals from economic prosperity to sustainability, a need for accompanying methods and indicators arises. This chapter discusses the main methodological approaches used to study sustainable innovation processes, including process-focused and outcome-focused approaches. The chapter calls for (1) increasing efforts to systematically analyse the existing body of case study research to identify common patterns and processes. Despite their limitations, efforts should also continue to collect data and indicators on sustainable innovation with global coverage. (2) Attention for the broader technological, social, and economic context in which sustainable innovation takes place, that is, a systemic perspective is needed. And (3) the use of a wide variety of indicators to evaluate sustainable innovation. This requires mixed method approaches and a further integration of quantitative and qualitative methods as well as a reconnection between the sustainability transitions community and the general innovation sciences community.

Sustainable innovation in business models: celebrated but not interrogated 商业模式中的可持续创新:赞美但不质疑

This chapter contributes to literature on sustainable innovation by critically engaging with the concept of sustainable innovation in business models. Four types of models purported to contribute to sustainability are explored: circular business models, product–service systems, business models for collaborative consumption, and business models for collaborative production. First, we evaluate each model according to the framework of value proposition, value creation and value capture. Second, we investigate how each model addresses the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability differently. Third, we study the different forms of innovation these business models rely on for their success, by following the classification of innovation that distinguishes between technological (product and process), organizational (management systems at a company, value chain or value network level), and societal innovation (change of lifestyles, consumer behaviour and consumption patterns). We end the chapter by outlining future research directions for studying sustainable innovation in these business models. (Less)

Employing an evolutionary epistemology lens to knowledge production, the introductory chapter charts how existing disciplines and fields responded to growing recognition of environmental crises in the 1970s by establishing new research programmes, fields and sub-disciplines. The analysis covers: responses from science, technology and innovation studies, and management and organization studies and the emergence of new fields of environmental sociology, industrial ecology and ecological economics. It then examines how durable research lineages emerged that constitute the fragmented field of sustainable innovation research. Lineages include: eco-innovation determinants, sustainable systemic innovation, responsible research and innovation, sustainable business model innovation, and sustainable consumption practices.
