Undergraduate pre-service chemistry teachers’ conceptions about inorganic qualitative analysis 本科职前化学教师对无机定性分析的认识

The research was a baseline study to determine the perceptions and alternative concepts that pre-service teachers’ have which hinder them from making correct inferences during practical inorganic chemistry experiments. A two-tier qualitative analysis diagnostic instrument (QADI) was developed and used to diagnose and treat the participants’ alternative concepts in inorganic chemistry qualitative analysis. The diagnostic instrument was administered to 78 pre-service teachers in the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana. The study revealed that students’ inabilities to make correct inferences or write and balance equations for suspected reactions correctly were the main hindrances to successful qualitative analytical activities. They often resorted to guess work. The most prevalent conceptions were their inability to predict and distinguish between chalky and gel precipitates especially when aqueous ammonia and sodium hydroxide were used on test samples. They were also unable to distinguish insoluble salts from true precipitates. A post administration of the QADI after the treatment period showed that the intervention worked positively to increase pre-service teachers’ content knowledge in inorganic chemistry and their understanding of inorganic qualitative analytical work. Learning to Teach Basic School Mathematics: Lessons from a Pedagogical Course 学习教基础学校数学:来自教学课程的教训

This is an empirical study designed to investigate the ideas pre-service elementary teachers bring into a mathematics pedagogy course, how these ideas change over the course of the semester and find out what the sources of the changes are. The study involved ten pre-service elementary teachers in one pedagogical course in mathematics offered at a Midwestern University in the United States of America in 2003. Analyses of data revealed that on the whole very small things changed. Specifically, while some participants still maintained static and more prescriptive views of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics, others showed slight movement toward socio-constructive ideas of teaching. The sources of these changes ranged from more techniques from their field placements to interaction with peers in course discussions. Relying on available literature on ways of challenging the wrong views pre-services teachers bring to their coursework from the long years in school as students, recommendations have been made about the need to consider using multimedia systems to help pre-service teachers learn to teach in a reflective and critical manner. Determining Factors in Secondary School Students’ Choice of Physics 中学生物理专业选择的决定因素

Using survey research approach, the predictive power of certain characteristics of physics curriculum, social factors, as well as some students‟ characteristics (11 predictor variables) on choice of physics were assessed. The study involved 384 students randomly selected from 14 public senior secondary schools in Ibadan Educational Zone I, Oyo State, Nigeria. The data generated from their responses to the “Assessing students‟ choice of physics” questionnaire were analyzed using standard multiple regression. Results showed that 6.9% of the variability observed in the students‟ choice of physics could be attributed to a linear combination of the examined predictor variables. Availability of functional science clubs in schools as well as membership of such clubs seemed to be important predictors of choice of physics. The needs for proper guidance and counselling services as well as strengthening of science clubs in schools were stressed. Keywords: predictors of students‟ choice of physics,

Developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) application for soils and crop suitability studies in Atwima District of Ghana 在加纳Atwima地区开发用于土壤和作物适宜性研究的地理信息系统(GIS)应用程序

This paper reports a study that sought to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) application for soils and their crops suitability in the Atwima District. The purpose of the study was to digitally capture, store, and analyze the soil map and crops suitability data of the district. GIS is a computer-based system for gathering, storing, manipulating and analyzing spatial data to support decision making. In this study, the soil map of the Atwima district was digitized and analyzed with GIS software called ArcView. The soil characteristics and crops suitability data were also added in tabular form to the database. A thematic map showing soil associations and their crop suitability was then generated from the database and displayed concurrently with the tabular data. Analysis of the map and table proved that it is easier to study soils and their suitable crops from their data displayed concurrently on the desktop. It was therefore concluded that developing GIS application for the study of soils and crops suitability is an effective way of bringing all related datasets together to support agricultural research and decision making. The main recommendation was that agricultural students must develop a comprehensive GIS database that will include all datasets relevant to soils and crops studies and management. Optimal Allocation of Flows (Water) Within the Volta Basin System of Ghana 加纳Volta盆地系统内流量(水)的最佳分配

In this paper, a hypothetical network is proposed for the Volta Basin System (V.B.S) using the optimization technique for obtaining corresponding optimal allocation of flows from runoffs in the sub-basins (source) to the sink (Akosombo reservoir). Maximum flow paths and their capacities with consumptive and non-consumptive flows were identified. We are able to determine the optimal withdrawals on these flows for either consumptive or non-consumptive use. The role of women in youth health status- diet and exercise 妇女在青年健康状况中的作用——饮食和运动

Youths of today are leaders of tomorrow. Youth is the time of life when a person is young, especially the time before a child becomes an adult. Health is wealth. It is a common say that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation and since the women in the society stay more at home with the youths, they have important roles to play in taking care of them in terms of their diet and exercise. Youths in the society today are more obese than the adults; this is because they spend less time doing any form of physical activity when compared with the adults who spend more time on physical activities than the youths. It is important in the society to educate our youths on their health, how to improve their diets and encourage physical activities in our homes. This paper examined the roles of women in youth health status – Diet and Exercise. The paper recommended that women and the 3 tiers of government ( that is, local, state/regional, and federal government) should take adequate care of the youths in their homes and the society by providing good diet and allowing them to exercise regularly to keep the body healthy. The basic understanding of science that should be possessed by everyone not only professionals in science is called scientific literacy. This paper focuses on the need to integrate scientific literacy into the functional literacy programme in Nigeria. Ability to read and write alone without scientific literacy will make learners to be victims of superstition and taboos. Learners who are scientific illiterate are also likely to be confused by events happening around them and also unable to make some informed decisions about some issues in their daily lives. It is argued that a person is not completely literate until scientifically literate. Nigeria should borrow a leaf from the United States of America who despite high level of scientific literacy are still projecting into the future not only to make their citizens to be able to read and write alone but to be scientifically literate. There is therefore the need to project into the future and work out plans to make Nigerian citizens scientifically literate. In order to realise these plans, there are basic issues and challenges that should be tackled. These are funding, curriculum design and implementation, language barriers and means of communication, exceptional children participation, gender, rural and urban factors and monitoring and evaluation of programme impact. Effect of four teaching strategies on senior secondary students’ achievement in an aspect of agricultural science 四种教学策略对高中生农学某方面成绩的影响

This study investigated the effect of four teaching strategies; peer-tutoring, demonstration, project-based and lecture teaching strategies on students‘ achievement in pasture and forage crops which is an aspect of agricultural science. Lecture strategy served both as a teaching strategy as well as control since it is assumed to be a conventional strategy of teaching. A 4×2×2 pre-test, post–test experimental design with a control group was used in which two hundred randomly selected Senior Secondary School II (SSS II) Agricultural Science students were drawn from three schools. The data was analyzed using ANCOVA and Scheffe post–hoc analysis. There was significant main effect of treatment on students‘ achievement in an aspect of agricultural science that is, pasture and forage crops [F3, 183 = 20.775; p 0.05]. Peer-tutoring, demonstration and project-based strategies of teaching are potent in raising students‘ achievement. Thus, in-service training in form of workshops, seminars and symposia should be organized for teachers regularly to update their knowledge on adoption of appropriate teaching strategies. The Supply of Science Teachers to Secondary Schools in Ondo State, Nigeria: A Critical Analysis 尼日利亚Ondo州中学科学教师的供应:一项批判性分析

This paper investigated the supply of science teachers to secondary schools in Ondo State, Nigeria. It was an ex-post facto and descriptive research. The study population comprised all the 281 secondary schools and 4 higher institutions in the State as well as 30 higher institutions from neighbouring States producing teachers for secondary schools. The sample in respect of secondary schools was identical with the population. Since only 2 out of the 4 higher institutions in the State produce teachers, the 2 higher institutions were selected for the study. Out of the 30 higher institutions in neighbouring States, 16 were selected thereby giving a total sample of 18 higher institutions. The method of selection was by multi-stage, purposeful and stratified random sampling. The instrument used was an inventory while the data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. It was found that science teachers were in less proportion compared to non-science teachers in all the schools. Male science teachers were in greater numbers than female science teachers in the schools. The number of science teachers supplied from higher institutions outside the State was greater than the number supplied from higher institutions within the State The supply of science teachers did not match the demand for them in the schools. It was concluded that higher institutions in the State had not been supplying sufficient number of science teachers to the schools. It was then recommended that more efforts should be made by government to increase the supply of science teachers to schools.
