This study aims to introduce the method that can relieve vibrating forces to oral environment by making an embouchure aid. Thin plastic crown forms were fabricated to prevent tooth abrasion and irritation to lip mucosa for the saxophone player. After application to the player, the most comfort form was chosen and delivered to 3 professional saxophone players. After 5 mon, the players responded to the survey. This embouchure aid did not disturb playing and gave comfort to lower lip. In general, the players preferred thin soft type and thought it caused little effect on sound. Far too little attention has been paid to the problems encountered by single-reed wind instrumentalist who suffer from tooth abrasion and irritation to lip mucosa. The embouchure aid not only prevent tooth damage but also diminish the discomfort of tight embouchure.

Objectives: The aim was to confirm the stem cell-like properties of the dental pulp stromal cells and to evaluate the morphologic changes during in vitro chondrogenesis. Materials and Methods: Stromal cells were outgrown from the dental pulp tissue of the premolars. Surface markers were investigated and cell proliferation rate was compared to other mesenchymal stem cells. Multipotency of the pulp cells was confirmed by inducing osteogenesis, adipogenesis and chondrogenesis. The morphologic changes in the chondrogenic pellet during the 21 day of induction were evaluated under light microscope and transmission electron microscope. TUNEL assay was used to evaluate apoptosis within the chondrogenic pellets. Results: Pulp cells were CD90, 105 positive and CD31, 34 negative. They showed similar proliferation rate to other stem cells. Pulp cells differentiated to osteogenic, adipogenic and chondrogenic tissues. During chondrogenesis, 3-dimensional pellet was created with multi-layers, hypertrophic chondrocyte-like cells and cartilage-like extracellular matrix. However, cell morphology became irregular and apoptotic cells were increased after 7 day of chondrogenic induction. Conclusions: Pulp cells indicated mesenchymal stem cell-like characteristics. During the in vitro chondrogenesis, cellular activity was superior during the earlier phase (within 7 day) of differentiation.

Objectives: This study was aimed to examine the patients’perception and satisfaction with the results of endodontic microsurgery which was apicoectomy with retrofilling. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was given to 109 patients, who were recalled after a minimum of 3 months upon endodontic microsurgery in the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Yonsei University. A contingency table and correlation analysis were used to determine if there were any correlations between age/gender and the patients’responses ( p = 0.05). Results: Approximately 60% of respondents answered they had never heard of surgical endodontic procedures. 63.3% of respondents chose the surgical option because they wanted to keep their natural teeth. If the patient required the same procedure on another tooth later, 100 out of 109 respondents answered they would choose microsurgery instead of extraction. Most patients (82.57%) appeared to be satisfied with the surgical procedure. Conclusions: Endodontic microsurgery consisting of apicoectomy and retrofilling seems to appeal to majority of patients as a satisfactory and valuable treatment choice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fiber direc tion on the polymerization shrinkage of fiber-reinforced composite. The disc-shaped flowable composite specimens (d = 10 mm, h = 2 mm, Aeliteflo A2,Bisco, Inc., IL, USA) with or without glass fiber bundle (X-80821P Glass Fiber, Bisco, Inc., IL, USA)inside were prepared, and the longitudinal and transversal polymerization shrinkage of the specimens onradial plane were measured with strain gages (Linear S-series 350Ω, CAS, Seoul, Korea). In order to mea-sure the free polymerization shrinkage of the flowable composite itself, the disc-shaped specimens (d = 7mm, h = 1 mm) without fiber were prepared, and the axial shrink age was measured with an LVDT (linearvariable differential transformer) displacement sensor. The cross-section of the polymerized specimens wasobserved with a scanning electron microscope to examine the arrangement of the fiber bundle in composite.The mean polymerization shrinkage value of each specimen group was analyzed with ANOVA and Scheffepost-hoc test (α=0.05).The radial polymerization shrinkage of fiber-reinforced composite was decreased in the longitudinal direc-tion of fiber, but increased in the transversal direction of fiber (p<0.05). This study was performed to assess the radiopacity of a variety of root canal sealers according to the specification concerning root canal sealers. Ten materials including Tubli-. Kerr Pulp Canal , AH , AH , AH plus , Ad sea . , , ZOB , and dentin were evaluated in this study. In the first part, densitometric reading of an each step of aluminum step wedge on occlusal film was performed at different voltage and exposure time. In the second part, ten specimens were radiographed simultaneously with an aluminum step wedges on the occlusal films under decided condition. The mean radiographic density values of the materials were transformed into radiopacity expressed equivalent thickness of aluminum (mm Al). The following results were obtained. 1. Among the various conditions, the appropriate voltage and exposure time that meet the requirement density was 60 kVp at 0.2 s 2. All of the materials had greater radiopacity than 3 mm Al requirement of ANSI/ADA specification No. 57 (2000) and ISO No. 6876 (2001) standards. 3. The radiopacity of materials increased as thickness of materials increased. 4. The mm Al value of each specimen at 1mm in thickness has a significant difference in the statistics. It suggests that root canal sealers have a sufficient radiopacity that meet the requirement.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sodium hypochlorite and steam autoclaving on the cyclic fatigue of nickel-titanium endodontic files. Two types of files with a .06 taper and #30 were used, (SybronEndo, Glendora, California, USA) and Hero (Micro-Mega, BesanCon, France). The files were divided into 6 experimental groups containing 10 files each group depending the soaking time in 6% sodium hypochlorite solution and number of cycles of steam autoclave. After sterilization, a cyclic fatigue test was performed on each file, and the fracture time was recorded in seconds. The control group underwent the cyclic fatigue test only. After the test, the surface characteristics of the files were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All groups containing the Hero 64~ files showed a similar cyclic fatigue fracture time. However, the cyclic fatigue fracture time with the files was significantly shorter in groups which were treated with sodium hypochlorite than in the control group (P and files to have significant corrosion on the file surface in groups treated with sodium hypochlorite, compared with the sharp and regular blades of the control group. files showed more corrosion than the Hero files. Bluntness of the blades of the file was observed in groups treated with steam autoclave. Although there was no obvious destruction on the surface of steam autoclaved Hero files, slight bluntness was observed. Sterilizing with a steam autoclave is much less destructive to files than sodium hypochlorite. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of excessive occlusal loading on stress distribution on four type of cervical lesion, using a three dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA). The extracted maxillary second premolar was scanned serially with Micro-CT. The 3D images were processed by 3D-DOCTOR. ANSYS was used to mesh and analyze 3D FE model. Four different lesion configurations representative of the various types observed clinically for teeth were studied. A static point load of 500N was applied to the buccal and lingual cusp (Load A and B). The principal stresses in lesion apex, and vertical sectioned margin of cervical wall were analyzed. The results were as follows 1. The patterns of stress distribution were similar but the magnitude was different in four types of lesion 2. The peak stress was observed at mesial corner and also stresses concentrated at lesion apex. 3. The compressive stress under load A and the tensile stress under load B were dominant stress. 4. Under the load, lesion can be increased and harmful to tooth structure unless restored. [J Kor Acad Cons Dent 31 (5) :359-370, 2006]

The goal of endodontic treatment is to eliminate or to lower the bacterial concentration gradient from the root canal and to prevent reinfection. In addition to cleaning and shaping procedure, root canal filling material may play a critical role in destroying bacteria which remained in the root canal system. Killing bacteria by root canal filling procedure is either done by the hermetic obturating seal or by the direct bactericidal properties of the obturating materials. Several endodontic sealers have been found to possess antibacterial properties depending on their chemical components, such as calcium hydroxide, eugenol, and fluoride. Different types of sealers have been introduced in the market and several studies have been done to evaluate antimicrobial effect of those sealers.
