In this article we analyze the geographical explorations and textual production of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay related to the City of the Caesars during the 18th century. We study the ambivalence of the Jesuit belief in this city in the mid-18th century, some pragmatic texts aimed at manipulating the authorities and the relationship between the City of the Caesars and the project for the “spiritual conquest” of the Indigenous population of southern Patagonia. Finally, we explore the changes in the Jesuit writing concerning this city during the last decades of the century.

This article differentiates the production of a singular iconographic repertoire on America from its ethno-iconographic use in the costume books produced in the second half of the 16th century. Firstly, it examines the way in which the experience of travelers in America was “translated” into texts and images intelligible to the European reader. Then, it focuses on the second of the intellectual operations mentioned, as it analyzes the presence of images of New World in new chains of reference and meaning. The incorporation of American iconography in costume books reveals their potentiality and limitations as visual and global devices of early-modern knowledge.

During the last century, anarchism in Latin America was studied under the perspective of methodological nationalism. Despite the merit of these productions, they omitted important issues related to the dynamics of the Latin American anarchist movement. In recent decades, the emergence of transnational history and the appropriation of its methodology by libertarian studies, led to the publication of new works that under this same approach address regional anarchism. In this article, we propose to make a bibliographic balance on the characteristics and implications that the transnational turn had in this historiography, considering its contributions, its incidence in the historiographic field and its limitations, related to the absent geographies of the transnational map constructed on the basis of those investigations.

The historical shipping records of the Malvinas Islands coasts allow us to explore the maritime connections that the archipelago had between 1826 and 1914. The reconstruction of such connections, integrated with heterogeneous information from different archives and databases of historical voyages, makes it possible to identify the activities and needs that brought ships to the Malvinas Islands, the different actors that were part of their history, the change in the maritime relation before and after the British occupation of 1833, and the international connections of the archipelago with different points in continental Patagonia and the strait of Magellan.

This article attempts to present a general development of independent theater in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, towards the 1960s and 1980s. The formation of a theater community in complex socio-political articulations, such as links of varied middle classes and an ambivalent relationship with state powers, even during dictatorial periods, is analyzed. This extended time frame allows us to review and at the same time affirm the exceptionality of the last military dictatorship, highlighting the channels through which dissident subjectivities could be expressed in the context of authoritarian governmentality.

This paper aims to analyze the production of representations about the native peoples of the Rio de La Plata in two different instances. The first, during its first conquest (1536-1545), considers texts produced by their direct witnesses, Spanish colonial agents installed in an foreign territory; then, the reappropriation of these representations in the historiographical project of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (1601-1615). Taking both of them as cases of cultural translation, we intend to stress the intellectual operations needed to understand and communicate American native peoples’ ways of life in two different contexts that were nevertheless close in time.

In this paper we will deal with the issue of the hero raised by Tulio Halperin Donghi in El Enigma Belgrano, to reformulate and answer it, not through Belgrano’s biography, but through the process that led to the creation of his exemplary figure. We will analyze the funerary rites, the initial instance where the different ways of representation of the hero were materialized. We will then examine the patriotic poetry that allowed for those representations to be transmitted from generation to generation. Finally, we will reconstruct the process through which Belgrano’s biography became part of a national narrative that was consolidated with the inauguration of his monument in 1873 when his figure will be linked almost exclusively to the creation of the national flag.

The electoral reform promoted by Roque Saenz Pena has been the main subject of interest in Argentine historiography on the period between 1910 and 1916. Less attention has been given to other issues that contemporaries nevertheless considered to be problems of the utmost importance. Such is the case of those they identified in the Argentine federal regime, giving rise to several political and intellectual controversies. These pages aim to shed light on one of the issues of Argentine federalism of that period, such as the institutional condition of the National Territories and their eventual admission as new provinces.

This paper describes the Chubut Police Records Fund (CPRF), contextualizing the production of documents that compose it, and characterizing the identification technologies that were used to classify the population and control it in accordance with national legislation and international treaties signed by Argentina. The value of the Fund is highlighted, considering that the records offer summary information on thousands of inhabitants of Chubut with extreme documentation dates since the late 19th century. Finally, it is argued that this repository has potential for different lines of research, considering the typological diversity and its significative size.
