We propose a coherent neural network whose synaptic weights are embedded densely in volume hologram using a semiconductor laser so that the behavior is controlled by direct lightwave carrier-frequency modulation. A frequency-dependent learning obeys the complex-valued Hebbian rule. Experiments demonstrate that the system learns different output phase values dependently on the carrier frequency.

Dispersion management of bulk nonlinear materials for generating (3+1)-D optical soli-tons is achieved by use of negative dispersive mirrors. Ultrafast switching and wavelength conversion based on these dispersion managed solitons are proposed and demonstrated numerically.

Experimental characteristics high-Q single-cell photonic crystal laser modes are discussed. Especially the resonant mode with a central node, where the introduction of a small electrical wire at the center of the resonator does not produce appreciable optical losses, is investigated.

In this paper we present a novel slab lens based on artificial graded index medium. The lens is realized by etching 1-D subwavelength gratings into a high index slab waveguide to achieve the desired effective index distribution. A graded index profile is achieved by gradually modifying the duty cycle of the grating along the horizontal axis, whereas the beam is confined in the vertical direction by the slab waveguide. The proposed device is very attractive for various applications, including mode matching, coupling, guiding, imaging, optical signal processing, while offering the intrinsic advantages of monolithic, on-chip integration. The device is analyzed analytically numerically.
