Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a well-established monoamine neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). The discovery of 5-HT dates as far back as 1868 and can be traced to its presence in the blood and in the gastrointestinal tract [1].
