An HCN laser scattering technique is employed for detecting an electrostatic wave excited by ICRF heating on the JIPP T-IIU tokamak. The frequency spectra and wavenumber of the excited wave were observed during the heating. The measured wave is consistent with the theoretically estimated wave dispersion of the ion Bernstein wave which is mode-converted from the fast wave in the vicinity of the ion-ion hybrid resonance layer. The influence of MHD activity on the mode-converted ion Bernstein wave is examined. When the MUD activity grows and the plasma becomes unstable, the scattered signal from the ion Bernstein wave decreases, being accompanied with large fluctuations.

An interrelationship between various representations of the inverse scattering transformation is established by examining eigenfunctions of Lax‐pair operators of the sine–Gordon equation and the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation. In particular, it is shown explicitly that there exist Lax‐pair operators for the squared‐sum and squared‐difference eigenfunctions of the Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur inverse scattering transformation.

The inter-ionic density correlations and the associated screening potential are investigated for those dense, high-temperature plasmas with parameters appropriate to the inertially confined fusion experiments and the interior of main-sequence stars. The hypernetted chain scheme is used for the analysis of the correlations, where the screening effect of the electrons is taken into account via the dielectric function with inclusion of partial degeneracy and the local-field correction. We derive explicit analytic expressions for the enhancement rate of thermonuclear reactions applicable uniformly over the entire parameter domain of plasmas with the ionic charge Z =1 and 2.

Single and double electron capture cross sections for He 2+ in collision with Li° have been measured in the energy range of 0.8–2.0 MeV. The lithium target density was absolutely determined by the Rutherford scattering measurement. The results are consistent with the recent data measured at lower energies.

A charged particle trapped in an electrostatic wave is accelerated in the plane perpendicular to the wave vector k. It is found that there is an optimum angle theta = theta/sub m/ at which the particle gains a maximum energy which is about four times larger than that at theta = ..pi../2, theta being the angle between k and the magnetic field.

The theory of transport in nonlinear dynamics is developed in terms of ''leaky'' barriers which remain when invariant tori are destroyed. A critical exponent for transport times across destroyed tori is obtained which explains numerical results of Chirikov. The combined effects of many destroyed tori lead to power-law decay of correlations observed in many computations.
