Various nonuniform sampling methods have been summarized and a generalized recurrent sampling scheme, which can generally and mathematically describe the arbitrarily recurrent sampling schemes including either uniform or nonuniform sampling, has been derived. Some properties of the nonuniform sampling and the signal reconstruction have also been discussed.<>

Details are presented of a software package which combines the theoretical models developed in the course of a research programme with experimental data obtained from devices used in U.K. field trials of fibre in the local access network. This package could provide a rapid prototyping test-bed on which the early design and planning of the access network could be structured. The limits of optical network performance in the key areas of power budget and return loss can be assessed readily using the package as part of the design and planning process.<>

The authors propose an infinite impulse response (IIR) adaptive equalizer using a channel estimator. This equalizer is able to equalize the channel characteristics with the least mean square (LMS) algorithm even under the ill condition where the channel is distorted severely. It has a cascade structure of an all pole filter which has the inverse characteristics of the channel and a finite impulse response (FIR) adaptive filter updated by the LMS algorithm. In the case where only the FIR adaptive filter is used as the equalizer, the convergence property of the LMS algorithm changes for the worse under the ill condition. Because the use of the all pole filter, however, reduces such effects of the ill condition, the convergence property of the LMS algorithm of the FIR adaptive filter at the second stage is improved. Although the proposed equalizer is an IIR system, its stability is guaranteed by a simple operation. The performance of the proposed equalizer is shown by computer simulations.<>

Reliability and efficiency are two important characteristics of a good distributed mutual exclusion algorithm. Efficiency is generally considered in terms of the number of message transfers required. Considering the reliability aspect, it is desirable that an algorithm should be 'fully fault tolerant', i.e. capable of providing failed node removal and restart facility. Raymond's algorithm is efficient and it needs only O(log N) messages to enter a critical section. The authors show that Raymond's algorithm is not fully fault-tolerant and improve it to provide fully fault-tolerant capability for the case of single node failure.<>

Advances in technology allow the building of ever more complex applications systems, typified by systems involving electronic data interchange (EDI). While management has become less concerned with the issue of security, systems are becoming more difficult to control, while computer fraud crimes, particularly those perpetrated by 'trusted' insiders continue to rise. It is vital that those involved in building systems ensure that they are auditable, controllable and secure, as well as usable and maintainable. Systems analysts and EDP auditors have roles to play, and methodologies and tools must be enhanced to meet these requirements.<>

A method of measuring intelligence quantitatively in units of bits based on information theory is presented. The proposed definition of intelligence gives only a quantitative measure of the thinking process distinguishable from the information processing part and knowledge. It also treats intelligence as a resource and predicts that a C compiler uses more intelligence per instruction than a Spice program. The term 'capability for intelligence' is introduced and shows that a human being may have a much higher capability for intelligence than a microprocessor. The amount of intelligence measured can be used to develop more intelligent microprocessors and algorithms.<>
