Although many approaches have been proposed for multimedia communications, few are suitable for small business offices. A low cost multimedia communications system model which was developed by P.C.K. Liu and C.Y. Li (see Proc. 13/sup th/ Int. Telecom. Symposium, ROC, vol.3, p.121-5, 1992) is reviewed, and the performances of the system for different traffic handling approaches are evaluated. The result shows that 'Movable channel capacity boundaries' is the most suitable method for the system model.<>

The authors discuss microcalcification observed in a mammograph which is important in diagnosis of early breast cancer. After emphasizing the digitized mammograph images by Laplacian operation, a threshold processing was applied to extract the microcalcifications. Although microcalcification opacity exists for both malignant and benign cases, there were differences in the distribution and the numbers of opaque points. To give a quantitative expression for the microcalcification, the data were evaluated by using fractal dimension. As a result of processing 25 cases, including 10 benign cases, up to 14 out of 15 malignant cases were able to be separated using the fractal dimension.<>

Using the approach of simultaneous ML estimation of digital sequence and unknown carrier phase, the authors develop a new suboptimum ML soft decoder which achieves coherent detection performance if the carrier phase is time-invariant. This decoder does not require any explicit recovery of coherent references, involves only linear operations in the metric computation, and can be implemented efficiently using a Viterbi decoder structure. It is applied to the ML estimation of a convolutionally/trellis coded MPSK sequence, as well as an uncoded MPSK sequence.<>

The performance of the integrated voice and data radio access system is improved by using the capture effect. To apply the capture effect, two methods are proposed, one is to increase power for voice-restart-packets and the other is to increase the power of data packets at random. The performance is analyzed by computer simulation with voice signals gathered from real telephone conversations. The delay vs. throughput performance is significantly improved with both the two methods.<>

Advances in technology allow the building of ever more complex applications systems, typified by systems involving electronic data interchange (EDI). While management has become less concerned with the issue of security, systems are becoming more difficult to control, while computer fraud crimes, particularly those perpetrated by 'trusted' insiders continue to rise. It is vital that those involved in building systems ensure that they are auditable, controllable and secure, as well as usable and maintainable. Systems analysts and EDP auditors have roles to play, and methodologies and tools must be enhanced to meet these requirements.<>

The authors propose an infinite impulse response (IIR) adaptive equalizer using a channel estimator. This equalizer is able to equalize the channel characteristics with the least mean square (LMS) algorithm even under the ill condition where the channel is distorted severely. It has a cascade structure of an all pole filter which has the inverse characteristics of the channel and a finite impulse response (FIR) adaptive filter updated by the LMS algorithm. In the case where only the FIR adaptive filter is used as the equalizer, the convergence property of the LMS algorithm changes for the worse under the ill condition. Because the use of the all pole filter, however, reduces such effects of the ill condition, the convergence property of the LMS algorithm of the FIR adaptive filter at the second stage is improved. Although the proposed equalizer is an IIR system, its stability is guaranteed by a simple operation. The performance of the proposed equalizer is shown by computer simulations.<>

The authors introduce a new communication interface, the switch-computer service interface (SCSI) which provides a standard interface for the interworking between communication switches and host computers. Such an interface will widen the spectrum of accessible value-added services across communication networks. As a result, SCSI allows the implementation of a variety of computer-based telecommunications applications. For example, users would be able to select and connect to a variety of information services using a single interactive access device. SCSI is formally specified in Estelle which is one of ISO's standard formal description techniques.<>
