The paper presents an analysis of the performance of an asynchronous binary code division multiple access fibre-optic system. Heterodyne detection is assumed. An approximate expression for the average bit error rate is derived, taking into account the effects of shot noise, laser phase noise and multiple access interference. The author presents numerical results which show that laser phase noise and multiple access interference impose a very low limit on the number of stations that can simultaneously use the channel.<>

The paper describes template synthesis of digital retina chips (DRCs) for information coding and decoding, especially for static images. The coding (C-) and decoding (D-) are done by halftoning and reconstructing respectively. The output u* of the D-DRC can be regenerated to recognize the almost same original input u of the C-DRC. In order to reduce the error between the original gray image u and the reconstructed gray image u*, multibit dynamics is proposed considering the minimization of distortion.<>

A signal processing model for the epileptic EEG is used to formulate an analysis model, based on linear prediction. This formulation is implemented as a number of adaptive filters and applied for the detection of epileptic spikes. The theory behind the method is explained and the implementation described. Results are presented and compared for two adaptive filter realizations. The computationally efficient algorithm can be implemented in real-time on a small microcomputer system for on-line analysis. Intermediate results produced by this method may be used for further analysis. Generalization for the detection of other EEG transients and the removal of artifacts can be achieved easily.<>

Various learning vector quantization (LVQ) algorithms proposed before have made use of the learning coefficient alpha (t) for obtaining convergence of training. The authors present a new method that can be to estimate the learning rate at alpha (t) from the input and codebook vectors directly and independent of the past history of alpha (t). The results of experiments done with real speech data with the algorithm are also reported.<>

The integration of satellite and terrestrial mobile communication systems demonstrates an immediate solution to enable a mobile satellite terminal (MT) to access the land mobile satellite system (LMSS) inside an urban area. The base stations of the terrestrial system will act as relay stations for the LMSS when the MT operates inside an urban area. Mathematical models are developed to simulate and analyse signals received at the MT in a Rayleigh-fading channel. The influence of level-crossing rate (LCR) and bit error probability (BEP) on the switching criteria for the integrated system are presented.<>

In coherent optical subcarrier multiplexing systems, the performance degradation of the system due to the phase noise of lasers restricts the maximum numbers of stations and channels that the system can serve. The effects are analyzed in terms of carrier-to-noise ratio penalty. The effects of Reed-Solomon coding are also analyzed. It is shown that the numbers of channels and stations can be increased greatly by coding.<>

The authors clarify noise generation mechanisms due to optical fiber nonlinearity in laser amplifiers and squeezers in coherent communication systems, and discuss the mechanism of reduction of phase noise due to optical fiber nonlinearity by using a squeezer in optical coherent repeater systems. They show that considering the classical and the quantum behaviors of the Kerr effect separately makes it easier to understand the mechanism instinctively. They expect further technical development of squeezer in order to realize long-haul coherent communications systems.<>

The integration of reliability and performance has received increasing attention. Performability, a new kind of network reliability measure is gradually employed in analysis. However, most results are based on the assumption that failures of different components are independent. Some solutions of the problem have been obtained, though they are preliminary. Some open issues are mentioned.<>
