New religious movements in Africa: Neo traditionalist movements perspective
Pub Date : 2020-01-01 DOI: 10.33545/26648679.2020.v2.i1a.15
J. Obineche
Neo religious movements is a term often used to describe a wide range of movements that developed in the tail end of the 19 century (the 1960s and 1970s). It is a counter culture in response to the imposition of colonial and the early missionary enterprise. In Africa, it is a modern religious movement that emerged as a creative and innovative response to the historically and unprecedented change in the religio-cultural life of African religiosity. It is a global phenomenal upsurge that cuts across all forms and strata of religious types. However, the thrust of this work is centered on “neo traditionalist movements in Africa’’ as a modern form of the already existing African religions. From the historical perspective, it is observed that colonial and missionary label of African religions as primitive, fetish, idolatrous, heathen among others were repugnant designations. It is in this light that the African traditional religion seeks not only to defend itself from these western missionary and colonial derogations but to present its rightful place in the annals of modern world religions in its dynamic new form, here presented as new religious movement. Having survived the missionary/ colonial suppression as a primordial religion of Africa especially in Nigeria, it developed from a nationalist movement to its contemporary modern form as a secularized Godianism just as every known religion of mankind remains dynamic in tandem to the trend of globalization.

Social Studies has become a veritable tool not only for instruction but also for ethnic integrations for peaceful coexistence. The administration placed on Social Studies has designed it for the training of Nigerian children to become good citizens capable of contributing meaningful towards national development. National integration in an ethnically, religiously and culturally diverse society like Nigeria is very crucial for the existence of peace, security and stability which are essential for the socio-economic development and progress of the country. It is on this note that the fostering of National Integration among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria has been a major pre occupation of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and social studies is seen an catalysts that can inculcate in the people from various ethnic groups the spirit of togetherness cooperation fairness, love, faithfulness, equity, justice and sense of belonging that can educate the citizenry on the imperativeness of nation integration and unity for national development. Social studies as one of the core subjects in primary and junior secondary school stresses those cultural values that will make society grow, co-exist and develop along the modern line through the study of different ethnic cultural values. The paper approaches national integration from the stand point of discussion how show studies can serve as catalyst to bring integration among the ethnic groups.

Exploring conflicts among commuter omnibus crew and touts: Case of sekersquo;s selected bus ranks

In Zimbabwe, the greater part of urban commuter transportation is in the hands of privately-owned omnibus crew and touts, who are popular for immorality and violence. The study seeking to establish the crew and touts’ most conflicts, their causes and how they resolve them was guided by an implicit theory that disenchanted and under-employed people are more likely to engage in violence since their opportunity cost of doing so is low and the Politeness theory by Brown and Levinson. Data were collected from 24 participants randomly sampled from three omnibus ranks in Seke; Makoni, C-K Junction and Unit L. The qualitative study following an exploratory enquiry used informal interviews and mobile observations before analysing data using content analysis approach.
