Sembilang ( Plotosus canius) is among favored consumption fish by coastal community. This study was conducted to analyze some biological aspects of sembilang fish in the Langsa waters. A total of 100 fish were observed (78 males and 22 females). Observations were made on the relationship between length and weight, condition factors, and gonad maturity level. Based on the results of the study, it showed that the male were in the range of 26 - 39 cm and weight 95 – 280 gr. Whereas females were 28 – 36.3 cm and weigt of 117-214 gr. The length-weight relationship has a negative allometric growth pattern where the value of b = 2.582 for males and b = 1.526 for females with a correlation is getting closer to 1 indicating the pattern of length growth is always followed by weight gain ( r = 0.88) for males, and (r = 0.71) for females. The average value of the male and female condition factors is 1.1048 and 1.0102, indicating that the male condition is better than the female. It was found that the level of maturity of the gonads I and II was found at different body sizes.

Abstract Microplastic as the result of degradation of plastic wastes has become major concern in the marine environment. Once entering the ocean, it can be ingested by various marine organisms including fish. This study aimed to analyze and compare microplastics in the gills, gastrointestinal tracks and muscle of Sardinella lemuru from Sendangbiru, Malang. Ten fish samples were collected from the fishermen on March 2020 with the size of 11−15 cm. Laboratory analysis was conducted from the measurement of the total length (cm) and weight (g) of each sample, dissection of each organ, degradation of organic matter and microplastic identification using microscope. Organic matter degradation was conducted using H 2 O 2 30 % and Fe(II) 0.05 M and samples were left overnight for the organic matter to completely degraded. Three types of microplastic were found with the highest was fiber (54 %) followed by fragment (43 %) and film (3 %). The presence of microplastics in the fish organs might be related with microplastics in the environment. The composition of microplastics was different in each organ. Fragment was observed the most in the gills, whereas fiber dominated in the gastrointestinal tracks and also fish muscle. Film was found the least in all the three organs. Microplastics in the gills and gastrointestinal tracks were related to the osmoregulatory and feeding process, respectively, while microplastics in the fish muscle might be due to translocation process between the organs.

Freshwater lobster ( Cherax quadricarinatus ) is a group of crustaceans that live in freshwater. This lobster has a good potential to be cultivated. This research was carried out to investigate the use of supplementary feeding to grow out the freshwater lobster. The research design used completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments and 3 repetitions, namely PL (control), PW (pellets and carrots), PK (pellets and potatoes) and PJ (pellets and white sweet potatoes). The freshwater lobster used in this study was 5-7cm in size and 6-8g in weight. The results of this study indicated that supplementary feeding affects the increase in the growth of freshwater lobster, where the weight gain, daily growth rate and weight growth percentage were (2.21 ± 0.06 ), (1.05 ± 0.03) and (34.40 ± 1.15) in PW treatment, respectively. The highest length gain was in the PJ treatment (0.44 ± 0.02). This study explained that carrot supplementary feed was the best combination to optimize the growth of freshwater lobster.

Bekasam is a fermented product from Indonesia, made from fish, salt and rice or other carbohydrate sources. Fermentation process of bekasam mostly involve lactic acid bacteria that contribute in formation of the taste and aroma of the product and prevent product damage or rotting by producing antibacterial properties. The aim of this study is to isolate lactic acid bacteria from bekasam and to determine their antagonistic activity against E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus . The parameters used in the selection of potential isolates were the antagonistic activity by double layer and agar diffusion methods, and its characteristics as lactic acid bacteria based on gram staining, catalase test and gas production. The results of the antibacterial test showed that 58.3%, 66.67% and 91.67% of total LAB perform antibacterial activity against E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus , respectively. Isolates HRB.1.10; HRB.1.7; and HRB.1.11. showed the highest antibacterial activity. Those isolates were determined as gram-positive bacteria, did not have catalase activity and did not produce gas in media containing glucose, which is in accordance with the characteristics of lactic acid bacteria.
