AbstractThe heat dissipation of high alumina castables for ladle permanent layer is a topic worthy of attention and solution. It is proposed to use spherical porous mullite (a solid waste) instead of irregular M70 mullite aggregate in castable to reduce the thermal conductivity and realize a high-strength and lightweight design. The effect of spherical porous mullite content in castables on thermal conductivity, service strength and thermal shock resistance were discussed. The results demonstrated that the substitution amount of spherical porous mullite increased, the bulk densities of the castables dropped from 2.68 to 2.38 g.cm−3, the apparent porosity rose from 15.5 to 25.0%. The thermal conductivities reduced from 1.174 to 0.585 W.m−1.K−1 (1000°C), which can be ascribed to the increased porosity extending the heat transfer path. Furthermore, owing to the high strength of spherical mullite and its excellent bonding with matrix, the mechanical strength of castable was at a high strength level, with modulus of rupture of 18 M Pa and cold crushing strength of 76 MPa at the spherical porous mullite completely substituting M 70 mullite. The semi-lightweight and low thermal conductivity castable containing spherical porous mullite show great application potential in the ladle permanent layer. Keywords: Spherical porous mulliteM70 mulliteLadleInsulating refractory castables

AbstractThe present investigation has turned on the effect of nano CuO and TiO2 as a dopant on ballistic performance of sintered alumina armours and its results are simulated using finite element analysis. The model was constructed on armor-backing plate (Al6061-T6) assembly with a steel made core and copper made outer jacketed bullet at high velocity (820 m/s) by Ansys workbench. The depth of penetration of bullet drastically reduces to 36.17% due to addition of 2 wt% nano CuO with respect to pure alumina. The same optimized effect shown by 1 wt% nano TiO2 is about 40.42%. The residual velocity of bullet gradually decreases with time and there is more reduction of residual velocity of 38% and 56.82% at 140 μs by addition of 2 wt% nano CuO and 1 wt% nano TiO2 respectively with respect to pure alumina. The alumina armours with 1 wt% nano TiO2 addition showed the best ballistic performance as compared to nano CuO.Keywords: Ballistic performanceAlumina7.62 M61 AP (armour piercing) bulletDepth of penetration

AbstractIndia’s ceramic industry, characterized by the transitional shift from traditional craft to modern industry, is imbibed to economic growth and development. It has witnessed a dynamic change from all hands-on deck to no hands-on deck. With an aim to understand the change in ceramic manufacturing workforce in India, the paper has analyzed the latest trends of ceramic workforce participation over the time period 1993-94 to 2020-21 using the national sample survey office (NSSO) employment and unemployment (E&U) survey data from 1993-94 to 2011-12 and periodical labour force survey (PLFS) data from 2017-18 to 2020-21. The results showcased that there was a declining trend in the overall workforce participation rate at the end of E&U survey (2011-12), however, after replacing NSSO E&U survey data with PLFS data the overall workforce participation rate showed an increasing trend. However, the study found that there was a continuous decline in the ceramic workforce as the total per cent of overall workforce. Further study highlighted that there is a wide gap between the perday earnings of ceramic and non-ceramic workers. Non-ceramic workers have high per day earning as compared to the ceramic workers that hampers the willingness of the workers to work in this industry. The study has established the impact of various socio-economic variables on per day earnings of the workers using Tobit regression model. The level of education has a positive and significant relation with per day earning of the ceramic workers. Education helps in accelerating the per day earning of the ceramic workers. Furthermore technical education have a highest positive impact on the per day earnings of the ceramic workers. Keywords: Ceramic workforceManufacturingTobit regression modelIndia

AbstractThis paper is a study from mineralogical and physico-chemical points of view about the possibility of using Arslanlar clay in tile and brick industry. Firstly, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry and plasticity measurements were performed to determine the unfired characterization of the clay sample. It was observed that illite, smectite, kaolinite, calcite, hematite, orthoclase and quartz were the main minerals. Plasticity tests revealed that Arslanlar clay was very high plastic clay. Then the clay test samples were prepared by pressing and firing separately at temperatures between 850° and 1100°C to evaluate physicochemical characteristics. Water absorption, linear shrinkage, bulk density, bending strength tests and colour measurement were performed. Also the fired samples were analyzed by XRD and scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the porosity decreased and the densification increased with increasing temperature, especially above 1050°C. Evaluations concluded that this clay can be used in production of structural ceramics and also pottery. Keywords: Arslanlar clayCharacterizationMineralogyPhysico-chemical properties

AbstractUltra-red pigment is in urgent need to enrich the colour range as well as to improve the quality of ceramic product. In this study, ultra-red CdS1−xSex pigments (CP) were synthesized through hydrothermal technique. The effects of S/Se ratio on the structural and optical properties of CPs were investigated. CPs were characterized by XRD, ICP, SEM and UV-vis techniques. The colorimetric parameters of CPs were measured as also their band-gaps were estimated based on Tauc plot method. Furthermore, detailed formation mechanism of CdS1−xSex has been elucidated. The results demonstrate that different compositions of CdS1−xSex can be facilely obtained by adjusting the R value (starting S/Se molar ratio); when R is equal to 0.67 and 0.83, the prepared samples are CdS0.75Se0.25, when R is equal to 1.00, 1.17 and 1.33, the prepared samples are CdS0.571Se0.429. It is found that excessive S2− plays critical role in CdS1−xSex formation. CP prepared with R=1.00 owns L*=44.69, a*=49.93, b*=22.66, implying an excellent red colour, which indicates potential use as an ultra-red ceramic pigment. Keywords: CdS1−xSexUltra-red pigmentExcessive S2−Colour performance
