The gyrator is a lossless nonreciprocal coupling element introduced by B.D.H. Tellegen (1948). It is a four-terminal network element. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate a theory of ideal active elements, which has recently been proposed. A gyrator will be constructed from four pentodes and it will be shown that these are the only elements necessary.

W. Tuttle
The author discusses practical circuit theory and emphasizes the great difference between exploratory theoretical research, such as has just been described, and the work of an engineer employed in an industrial laboratory to design, build, and use filter circuits and the like. This provocative editorial is a transcript of a talk presented at the New England Radio Electronics Meeting on 16 November 1956. Discussion is invited. Readers interested in the problem discussed below may wish to make particular note of announcement of the lecture series on Network Theory on page 58 of this issue.
