This article aims to review the research findings in the field of surface texture on fixed pads, tilting pad thrust bearings and sliders. Numerical/computational and experimental explorations have been done by researchers to improve the performance behaviours by varying texture parameters such as the shape of texture, its depth, width, texture area density, location and extent. Articles are classified as experimental and numerical techniques which are further categorized depending on the inclusion of cavitation and thermal effects. There are indications that the presence of texture (comprising of pits, dimples grooves and pockets) on the pad surface results in a reduction of the coefficient of friction and enhancement of load-carrying. The presence of a pocket is more beneficial in terms of increasing the minimum film thickness and decreasing the coefficient of friction than a pad with dimples or grooves. It is also observed that self-adaptive and bionic textures improve the performance behaviour of thrust pad bearings in comparison to conventional textures.

Slip and fall related injuries are common in workplaces and sufficient shoe-floor friction is required to prevent such incidents. Besides the presence of slippery contaminants, shoe wearing over time is one of the key factors which may lead to significant reduction in shoe-floor friction. While footwear-based slip testing has been conducted widely across floorings and contaminants, limited studies have focused on the effect of worn shoes on slipping. In this work, twelve formal shoes from common brands were tested through modelling of their outsoles in normal and different degrees of progressively worn conditions. Mechanical slip testing was conducted to quantify the available coefficient of friction (ACOF) of the outsole models across dry and two common contaminant conditions (i.e., floor or surface cleaner, and canola oil), and on three commonly available floorings. The effect of flooring, contaminant, and worn area, on the ACOF were characterized extensively. Progressively worn outsoles were found to lead to reduction in ACOF in the range of 28-97%. Outsoles having tread channels oriented at different angles with respect to the direction of footwear motion, were found to generate higher ACOF, than ones with horizontal tread patterns. Outsoles which had larger treads but with lesser intervals (i.e., large tread surface area) showed lower ACOF values. These outsoles experienced less reduction in the ACOF in the following cycles of wear. For safety against slips, outcomes from this work are expected to provide essential information for buying or replacing the formal shoes in its new or worn condition. © 2023 Published by Faculty of Engineering * Corresponding author:

The properties of the erodent, namely, size, shape, hardness, density, etc. have dominant effect on mass removal from the target material surface in slurry erosion. The area of contact of the erodent particle mainly depends on its size and shape. This further leads to variation in the stress development at the target surface due to particle impact. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of area of contact and stress concentration on the target surface due to different particles shapes and sizes. In view of this, in the present investigation AA6063 is selected as target material with three natural erodents, namely, quartz, SiC and alumina. The area of contact of impacting particle with target material surface is calculated by using Hertz contact stress theory and further determined by using ANSYS for similar conditions

The tribological behavior of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) filled with jute fiber reinforced interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were studied by using a pin-on-disc wear test rig at dry slide conditions. During the study, 70 wt.% of epoxy and 30 wt.% of polyurethane have been chosen as the base matrix material. As well, various proportionate of titanium dioxide such as 0%, 3% and 5% have been utilized to fabricate the particulate reinforced IPN laminate. To do the wear analysis such as materials type (A), sliding speed (B) and applied loads (C) were kept as the influencing parameters whereas coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate (SWR) have been seen as the outcome of the entire study. Taguchi technique was chosen to plan the entire experiments. Similarly, an orthogonal array and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to examine the impact of process parameters on wear of the IPN laminate. Out of all, results show that, addition of particulate materials into the composite predominately increased the specific wear resistance of the IPN laminate significantly .

Copper-based solid lubrication inlay technology is widely used in industrial production, especially in low-speed and heavy load conditions, and the structure and distribution of the filling pore have a significant influence on the friction performance due to the distribution of contact stress. In this paper, based on the operating conditions of the bottom pivot of the Three Gorges gate, graphite is used as a solid filled lubricant. The effects of filling pore diameter, filling pore depth, and area distribution rate on the friction and wear properties were studied by orthogonal equivalent test on MMW-1A tester with grease. Combining the three-dimensional morphology test and ferrography analysis, the results show that: 1) the influence of three parameters on the test results are: filling pore diameter > area distribution rate > filling pore depth; 2) when the filling pore diameter is 3 mm, the area distribution rate is 12%
