This paper describes the development of Pawster Care mobile application. This app allows Davao City Veterinary Office, private organizations, and private owners in searching for their pets a potential adopter and finding a new home. Moreover, this study aimed to help implement Republic Act No. 8485, Section 6, that forbids any person to commit pet cruelty acts, by providing pet cruelty reporting module. The app has been developed for the Android platform. The researchers performed agile scrum throughout the management and development of the software. Also, the researchers utilized Item-based Collaborative Filtering implementing Pearson correlation and k-nearest neighbor algorithm to produce a list of recommended pets for adoption for each user. The app described in this work was tested by a representative from the Davao City Veterinary Office, pet owners, and potential pet adopters. Results from this study show that the app can help the agency or private individuals find for their pet a potential adopter. Moreover, app user can easily report pet cruelty. The app can be further improved by adding the following features: real-time chat, location auto-complete when submitting a report, and improve the prediction accuracy of recommender systems using other data mining techniques.

This study aims to investigate and find a suitable model for forecasting the leptospirosis incidence in the Philippines. The Box-Jenkins approach was utilized in the development of an appropriate model. The dataset was retrieved from the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health containing the weekly number of leptospirosis cases in the Philippines from 2016 to 2018. This dataset was analyzed using the R software. The original series is nonstationary with indications of non-constant variance. Box-Cox transformation and ordinary differencing were performed on the series. The transformed series was analyzed and the results show that ARIMA(0,1,0) or the random walk model is the most appropriate model for forecasting leptospirosis incidence. The residuals and forecast errors of the fitted model behave like a white noise process. The fitted model may be used for forecasting the future number of leptospirosis cases in the Philippines.

Information on the speculation and trading of gold abounds. Investors are attracted to moving their funds to gold as guaranteed storage of wealth, while traders capitalize on the dynamism of the market to build capital. The ups and downs in the price of gold and other precious metals can be predicted with proven mathematical and artificial intelligent algorithms. This study used machine learning algorithm in the price prediction of gold over a ten-year period. Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model was used in the experiment, while Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) evaluation metrics were used in the evaluation of the performance of the various ARIMA models. The results obtained in the study proved that ARIMA could achieve high prediction performance over the entire period of prediction. The best prediction outcome of 98.23% was obtained during the 52-week period.

This study sought to estimate the technical efficiency of irrigation systems in Southern Mindanao Region, Philippines. In order to do so, the study assessed the relative efficiency of 108 communal irrigation systems of the five provinces in Southern Mindanao based on the combination inputs and outputs. The input-oriented data envelopment analysis via DEAP 2.1 revealed 28 irrigation systems that are fully-technically efficient as they exhibited 1.00 technical efficiency scores in both constant- and variable returns-to-scale assumptions. Among the fully efficient irrigation systems, Cebuza SIS, Cateel Integrated IS, Badagoy CIS, and Pantang CIS lead the irrigation systems that lie in the efficiency frontier. Implications were discussed.

The world is best described in three words – a global village. In extension, the global village is a village of crisis where morality is seriously endangered with particular references to Africa, there is a serious need to attest the pathetic erosion of morality. There are diverse mechanisms for achieving this but one potential factor that should be considered is the potency of taboo. Really, the logical neo-positivist questions the scientific verifiability of taboo while many Christians and Muslims regard it as mere mythical construction to low unvaried mind through superstitious and further the relevance of African Traditional Religion. This paper argues that it is a critical analytical blunder to examine taboo through the lens of Western logic. Besides, modernity does not outlaw the pragmatic significance of taboo. Hence, taboo obeys a special metaphysical logic that draws on the synergy between the physical and the divine realm.

Natural processes bring heavy metals and further escalated by a long history of addition from industrial development. The soil serves as a sink and can accumulate different types of minerals and nutrients, including metals and metalloids that are harmful even at lower concentrations. Plants’ ability to sequester metals and mobilize into various plant parts are significant in the bioremediation process. This study used quantitative and exploratory research design, which involves the collection of soil and plant samples subjected to laboratory test to determine the heavy metal concentration in Pulabato, Tampakan, South Cotabato in terms of arsenic (As), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg). Analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation, simple and multiple linear regressions are employed to determine significant differences, relationships, and influences. Results show significant differences in plant heavy metal concentration across low, mid, and high elevations for metals Cu, Pb, and Hg. Pb concentration in soil shows a significant relationship with Cu in plants. Also, Pb concentration shows a positive correlation and Hg with a negative correlation for Pb concentration in the plant. Moreover, Hg’s presence in plants shows a negative correlation in Pb for soil and a positive relationship with Hg. Simple linear regression statistics show that Pb significantly influences Cu, Pb in the plant by Pb in soil, and Pb in the plant with Hg in soil. Multiple regression statistics show a significant Pb’s influence in the soil to Pb in the plant but not with Hg. Lastly, As and Pb significantly influences Hg concentration in plants.

This study measured the economic value of the pawikan Sanctuary using the contingent valuation approach. Two approaches were utilized, the Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) and the Willingness-to-Accept (WTA). The former was used to compute the contribution of the Dabawenyos to preserve and protect the pawikan sanctuary, while the latter measured the compensatory income revealed by the individuals whose livelihood have direct adverse impact on the sanctuary. Two sets of surveys were made, one to measure the WTA, targeted 100 residents surrounding the sanctuary, while the WTP with 1200 respondents scientifically chosen as respondents. Respondents of WTA posted average compensatory income of 7200 to cover income loss in the effort to preserve the sanctuary, with a derived producer surplus of Php 426. Meantime, the environmental protection contribution measured through WTP obtained estimated value of Php 9,837, with a derived consumer surplus of Php 8 per one additional person. The total economic value of the sanctuary was estimated at Php 435. The low imputed value of the natural resource is afforded to the fact the natural resource has no market value, people derive their income and livelihood from activities that imperil the resource, and finally, the public limits their support on the population of the marine turtle hosted in the pawikan sanctuary. This means that the contribution to preserve is required the moment there are turtles found in the sanctuary. This disconnects their revealed preference into the many roles and function of the natural resource. The general public misses the point that turtle also face the threat due to presence of oceanic plastic, the silting of the shoreline and the pollution of the water; all these will have impact on the population of the turtles in the coming years.
