Abstract Perhaps because immigration is currently one of the most hotly debated issues in America (e.g., Kuttner 2004), there is little appetite, especially lately, in the academic literature for an examination of some of the more serious, but lesser known issues that go along with this key demographic factor. These currently ignored issues nonetheless have serious implications for businesses (Crock 2004), the government (Bernstein et al. 2004), public-policy makers (Magnusson and Kripalani 2003) and social-service providers (Dobbs 2004), among others. One such much ignored, albeit serious issue is that of how immigrants gather information to solve problems (including those of consumption) in their new host culture. This issue has been barely investigated in the academic literature, though anecdotal evidence from the popular press show that it has serious implications for marketers (Vence 2002), public-policy makers (Aldrich and Variyam 2000) and social-service providers (Stewart 1996), among others. Consequently, in this paper I investigate this issue as follows. First, I focus on Chinese-American immigrants, for reasons I explain later in this paper. Second, I examine assimilational differences between these individuals, again, for reasons I explain later in this paper. Third, I investigate how these differences affect how these individuals search for information prior to the purchase of three durable products (personal computer, video camera and color television) and one non-durable product (dandruff-control shampoo). What I found is that each of the cultural, identificational, and structural assimilation has (1) distinct effects on this search behavior and (2) these effects vary by type of Product-purchase. I conclude by discussing implications of these findings for marketers, social-service providers and public-policy makers, among others.

Achieving the American Dream
Pub Date : 2005-12-05 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n03_06
Marcia A Shobe, L. Narine
Abstract As of March 2003, the immigrant population in the United States (US) has reached 33.5 million individuals. Finding a way out of poverty is very difficult for many immigrants due to both individual and institutional barriers to savings and asset accumulation. Given that the primary sources of wealth among native-born households is through homeownership, it is only fitting that foreign-born households would also wish to achieve the “American Dream.” This paper outlines significant supports and barriers to savings and, more importantly, homeownership among US immigrants. Several suggestions for asset-based policy development for immigrants are also included in the discussion. By examing these concepts, policy practitioners can learn how to improve economic well-being for current immigrants and future generations of Americans.

Abstract This is the second in a series of papers concerning forensic immigration social work. The first paper examined the broad issues and types of cases that require consultation by a forensic social worker in immigration cases. This paper will examine the pertinent legal standards that the forensic social worker must be aware of and the essential areas of inquiry in the evaluation of spousal abuse cases. The following two papers will examine the other two major types of cases referred from immigration lawyers: asylum and criminal and “hardship” immigration cases. The final paper in the series will examine the forensic social worker's presentation of the case as expert testimony in immigration court and highlight winning strategies.

The Use of Reframing in Clinical Practice with Chinese Immigrants
Pub Date : 2005-12-05 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n03_01
Irene W. Chung
Abstract Reframing can be an effective tool in enhancing a clinical practice that is based on a holistic understanding of the client's meaning systems, and the strengths and resilience exemplified in the client's life experience. Immigrant clients, who are often marginalized in society due to their markedly different sociocultural backgrounds and the pernicious effects of racism, tend to struggle with belief systems that are subjugated by those of the host country and internalize their losses and setbacks as personal deficits and failures. Two case vignettes of Chinese immigrants will be used to discuss how reframing can offer positive yet culturally relevant options for clients to create new meanings and adaptive behavior in their life situations.

Health Services Considerations Amongst Immigrant Populations
Pub Date : 2005-12-05 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n03_02
I. Montoya
Abstract The foreign-born population comprised 11.5% of the U.S. population in 2002. Immigration to the U.S. has grown substantially and continues to grow. A close examination of the immigration data shows that immigrant community in the U.S. is not homogeneous and in fact is very diverse both within itself and from the native-born population. U.S. Census Bureau data reveal that these differences create pockets of divergent populations within the country. How these populations assimilate into the U.S. healthcare system is not clearly understood. Cultural values, beliefs, and practices often juxtapose the immigrant to the healthcare system. Religious differences coupled with educational and income disparities add to the challenge of developing and implementing healthcare programs. This paper concludes with suggestions for more research in healthcare to immigrants.

Abstract This chapter focuses on the differential family reunification issues experienced by Cuban Marielitos and balseros upon entrance into the United States. Treatment recommendations, aimed at ameliorating the emotionally laden reunification issues, are presented within a family systems and ecological context. The overall intent of this chapter/article is to assist mental health practitioners in their therapeutic work with members of a relatively small but distinct Hispanic ethnic group. Two case vignettes are presented as a means of illustrating the key family reunifications issues that have impacted-and continue to affect-Cuban Marielitos and balseros.

Chapter 5. Serious Mental Illness Among Mexican Immigrant Families
Pub Date : 2005-08-03 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n01_05

Abstract The importance of family involvement in psychosocial interventions for persons with serious mental illnesses continues to gain empirical support. However, even as ethnic minority cultures are known to be more family-centered in comparison to Euro-American cultures, only a few studies focus on family context or on family treatment approaches for Mexicans. The focus of this paper is on mental health practice with Mexican immigrant families dealing with serious mental illness. We review available research on treatment issues and the sociocultural context that has relevance to serious mental illness within the family. Practice implications for increasing the cultural relevance of community based mental health services for this population are addressed. Several treatment strategies are delineated for practitioners confronted with clinical, social, and ethnocultural complexities when serving Mexican immigrant families dealing with serious mental illnesses.

Chapter 4. Concepts of Mental Health and Mental Illness in Older Hispanics
Pub Date : 2005-08-03 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n01_04
C. Berkman, P. Guarnaccia, N. Díaz, L. Badger, G. Kennedy
Abstract The effect of cultural context in symptom expression and interpretation among older Hispanics, and how they experience psychological distress are not well-understood. We use the illness representation model to learn about older Puerto Ricans' and Dominicans' conceptions and causes of positive mental health, the causes of emotional problems, the conceptions and causes of depression and anxiety, the distinction between depression and anxiety, and the relationship between age and depression. Greater understanding of the meaning of symptoms and syndromes of depression and anxiety might help to define more culturally-sensitive mental health treatments and service delivery systems.

Chapter 3. Mental Health Care of Hispanic Immigrant Children
Pub Date : 2005-08-03 DOI: 10.1300/J191v03n01_03
G. González-Ramos, M. González
Abstract This chapter addresses the mental health care of Hispanic immigrant children within a school-based context. The school system is presented as a natural support agent that is psychologically, culturally and geographically accessible for the delivery of culturally competent mental health services. The development of a multifaceted New York City public school-based program created, by the first author of this chapter, in response to the psychosocial needs of Hispanic immigrant children is discussed as a viable approach that may be used in the provision of ethnic-sensitive mental health care.

The development of a multifaceted New York City public school-based program created, by the first author of this chapter, in response to the psychosocial needs of Hispanic immigrant children is discussed as a viable approach that may be used in the provision of ethnic-sensitive mental health care.","PeriodicalId":235181,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Services","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127324682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
