This paper presents the WIMS 2.0 initiative, a study on the strategies, technologies and service platforms to be used by telecom operators to achieve the convergence with innovative Web 2.0 services in All-IP networks. After analysing the current situation in the world of IP services, a business model change is recommended through the adoption of a user-centric and open-garden philosophy. IMS is identified as the base platform to construct the convergence and the business model change. The study follows a two-sided approach to achieve the convergence: the open exposure of IMS capabilities towards Web 2.0 services and the use of Web 2.0 services to enrich operators' services. Following this approach, a reference model for the new service architecture, the WIMS 2.0 Services Platform, is also proposed. Focusing on the exposure of IMS capabilities as the main topic, the study recommends that IMS capabilities should be exposed through open Web APIs following a RESTful approach. In this regard, and in contrast to other existing RPC approaches, this paper proposes a design for the exposition of session-based IMS capabilities through REST APIs, more concretely, based on the AtomPub protocol.

As a result of the evolution of computer and networking technologies, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has proposed the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as a key element in Next Generation Networks (NGN) that supports multimedia services in the packet switched domain. To use IMS services, users should register in IMS network and to have their information be registered in IMS Databases. When transport media is mobile and user handover in the access network, the re-registeration procedure is needed. This is similar to initial register procedure and leads to excessive transmission delay. In this paper a solution is introduced to reduce the re-registration delay by reducing the number of required contacts with IMS Databases. We have compared re-registration time in our proposed scheme with the standard scheme in OPNET modeler 10.5. Simulation results have confirmed better performance for the proposed scheme.

Spread spectrum (SS) is a technique of secure communication, which increases resistance to natural interference and jamming, and prevents detection. If a cryptographically secure pseudo random sequence is used, the communication becomes more secure. Generally some short pseudo-random sequences are used in Spread spectrum. In this paper we present comparatively a different technique of signal hiding where we use a non secret communication and a secret Spread spectrum communication. We present a class of relay channel with orthogonal components for transmission of our proposed SS communication.

Location determination in GSM network is the major challenging issue due to the several complexities on both software and hardware side. The location of mobile node is always an important issue in GSM network because location based services to facilitate the user is gaining popularity in public. An error corrected rectangulation method based on intensity (ECRMI) is proposed that estimate the location of the mobile using the similar idea as DGPS.

In IETF NetLMM WG (Network-Based Localized Mobility Management), proxy mobile IPv6 has attracted a lot of attention to support IP mobility for mobile nodes without host involvement. For supporting delay sensitive services like VoIP, various faster handoff schemes have been proposed recently. In this paper, we propose adaptive context transfer schemes for a fast handoff in proxy mobile IPv6 which reduces the delay in AAA authentication and specified context transfer scenarios taking into account proactive and reactive handoff. A context transfer protocol will reduce the latency and packet losses by avoiding the re-initiation of signaling to and from the mobile node.

Multimedia networking in the near future is expected to be dominated by group applications such as IPTV, MMORPGs, and video conferencing. Hand in hand with new service offers, the deployment of multicast at the network layer startet to disseminate. Currently infotainment is gradually expanding into the mobile world, but a standard design of mobile multicast is still awaited. The traditional Internet approach of any source multicast (ASM) routing remains hesitant to spread beyond walled gardens. It is widely believed that simpler and more selective mechanisms for group distribution in source specific multicast (SSM) will globally disseminate to many users of multicast infrastructure and services. In this paper we present and discuss an extensive evaluation of the tree morphing protocol, which has been designed to facilitate seamless handovers for mobile SSM sources. Based on a full protocol implementation on a network simulator platform, we extensively explore the protocol performance. By employing artificial networks to cover fundamental topological constellations, as well as real-world network topologies, we analyze the handover behavior conceptually and in realistic scenarios. Strengths and weaknesses of the routing scheme are identified, leading to a discussion on future improvements.

Due to the current needs of the mobile telecommunications market to deliver tailored experiences to its users, IMS operators must be able to manage the interoperability and cooperation between the deployed services, in order to provide a high level of customization to their subscribers. With this goal in mind, this paper presents the Presence Application Router (Presence AR), based on the Default AR (DAR) concept introduced in the Java SIP Servlet API v1.1. The Presence AR allows runtime changes in the precedence relationships and application subscriptions that build the composition chains, based on the Presence information of the users involved in the session.

Due to the low density of mobile devices or their limits in wireless radio range, a continuous network connectivity cannot be sustained in mobile disruption-tolerant networks. In these networks traditional networking models relying on end-to-end communication cease to work. These type of mobile disconnected networks can only support opportunistic, store-carry-forward communication. Furthermore, due to mobile nodes that dynamically join and leave the network the concept of a single, always-on server is unreasonable. In these scenarios, mobile users have to rely on node and service discovery and applications that cope with network disruptions. 7DS introduces a new platform to develop mobile applications for disruption-tolerant mobile networks. 7DS provides the necessary transport and application layer functionalities for mobile nodes to exchange information in store-carry-forward communication. 7DS has been developed as a modular platform that provides application developers with core underlying functionalities required for mobile disruption-tolerant communication. We discuss the primary requirements of mobile applications and introduce two new applications implemented on top of the 7DS platform. These applications assist mobile users in data and event sharing in a server-less and disconnected networking environment.

YouTube launched a customized Web site for mobile devices, which is gaining popularity among users. However, accessing multimedia based Internet services from mobile devices consumes energy, the most critical resource of handheld devices. The energy consumption of YouTube for mobile devices has not been widely studied. In this paper, we present a quantitative study of YouTube's energy consumption in mobile devices based on the measurements carried out on Nokia S60 mobile phones. We further investigate the energy characteristics based on network access technology (WCDMA and WLAN), download technology and storage media used. Our experimental results show that network transmission using WCDMA consumes more energy than when using WLAN. In addition, the power consumption is relevant with the status of network interfaces, and the impact on energy consumption based on the storage media used can be ignored.

The delivery of a highly available and robust service offering is one of the critical objectives of service providers. Reaching this objective depends on the level of control service providers have on underlying transport infrastructure. Despite current deployment of IMS-based architectures assumes a vertical integration, IMS-based services can be offered without having a control on the underlying IP network. This paper introduces a solution to enhance the robustness of IMS-based architectures without assuming a vertically integrated system. The paper focuses on failures experienced by core service nodes and describes an autonomic solution to allow customers to access to the service during failures. This paper introduces a novel entity called SBC_PROXY which relays messages from peer SBCs (session border controller) to core service platform. An autonomous mode in which all SBCs are involved in the lookup and routing processes is also described. This paper does not make any assumption on the nature of the service which is offered through IMS. Nevertheless, a focus is put on session-based services such as audio/video telephony.
