This chapter reports on the results of an online survey of public opinion conducted in Taiwan during December 2015. By outlining the contents of the survey: Taiwanese voters' participation and identity formation, along with their relationship to cross-Strait relations, the chapter reveals further nuances of Taiwan's identity formation. It shifts to investigate how the reality of China's rise is affecting popular views and sentiments among those on the island about the Mainland as well as of their own sense of self. The chapter also provides empirical support for the theoretical approach of analytic eclecticism and systemism. The chapter offers analysis and synthesis by linking elite interviews with surveys on issues that pertain to the political economy of China's rise, cross-Strait relations, Taiwanese identity and US activity in Northeast Asia.

This chapter turns to explicate, in light of material from the interviews and surveys, the systemist-generated figure that provided a point of culmination for theorizing. It aims to understand the knowledge gained from the range of multiple data and methods and inputs together. Given the content of the interviews and surveys, the chapter examines how should the causal story from the initial graphic representation be elaborated. The chapter also addresses both policy implications and the influence of United States versus China great power competition. Drawing on the results of the multimethod empirical research, the chapter assesses this elaborated vision of Taiwanese identity, cross-Strait relations, the rise of China and US involvement in Northeast Asia. It concludes with ideas regarding further research and a few final thoughts about the study as a whole.

The Problématique of Taiwanese Identity
Pub Date : 2021-07-08 DOI: 10.2307/j.ctv1s2t0ck.9

This chapter evaluates the secondary literature with regard to understanding the context for contemporary cross-Strait relations. Following the review of academic studies, the chapter shows an evolving identity for the people of Taiwan, which includes both ethnic and institutional elements. In peeling back the layers of Taiwan's identity choice, the chapter begins to uncover how and why Taiwanese identity is highly political and increasingly convergent with the changing tides of political support on the island. The chapter then shifts to cover the politics of Taiwanese identity and assess the impact of the rapid ascent of China to world power status. It then turns to how the People's Republic of China (PRC) exerts pressure on Taiwanese identity. The chapter examines the closely related elemental role that Taiwan plays in relation to the Mainland, and the nexus of the United States, PRC and cross-Strait relations.

Factors Influencing Identifying Only as Taiwanese: A Layered Empirical Approach (Survey II)
Pub Date : 2021-07-08 DOI: 10.1332/policypress/9781529209877.003.0007

This chapter carries out a layered empirical approach from survey results obtained in 2017 to describe how people in Taiwan increasingly view their identity as separate and different from that of the Chinese people living on the Mainland. It investigates individual characteristics and contextual conditions that influence identity in Taiwan in addition to the critical factors of democracy and the United States. The chapter also looks at how beliefs about cross-Strait relations influence an individual's ideational formation as exclusively Taiwanese. By doing so, the chapter unfolds a greater analytical clarity and insights into how and why a ‘Taiwanese only’ identity has evolved on the island. The chapter then jumps to describe the Taiwan National Security Survey Data and the variables developed to address these questions. It elaborates on Proportional Reduction of Error (PRE) to explore critical questions about factors influencing Taiwanese identity. The chapter shifts its focus on Taiwanese–Mainland relational issues, such as the 1992 Consensus, then determines how the model used to explain ideational issues operates with political issues such as the performance assessment of President Tsai Ing-wen.

This chapter presents a historical review that focuses on Taiwanese identity, the rise of China, cross-Strait relations and the role of the United States within the sub-region of Northeast Asia. It begins with the account of prehistoric times, but its main emphasis is on the era from the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949 onward. The chapter then proceeds from early history to the arrival of the Japanese in 1895. It covers the era of Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945, the initial decades of Nationalist rule, the Taiwanese economic miracle when identity-related developments appear, and the key interactions involving the Democratic Progressive Party in power vis-à-vis the United States and PRC in the new millennium. The chapter sums up the history of Taiwan to provide a context for examination of academic literature, along with results from elite interviews and opinion surveys.

This book investigates the implications of the global ascent of China on cross-Strait relations and the identity of Taiwan as a democratic state. Examining an array of factors that affect identity formation, the book considers the influence of the rapid military and economic rise of China on Taiwan's identity. The ensuing assessment offers valuable insights into which policies have the best chance of resulting in peaceful relations and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and builds a new theory of identity at elite and mass levels. It also possesses implications for the US-led world order and today's most critical great power competition.

Theorizing about Identity, Change in Capabilities and Dyadic Relations: An Approach Based on Analytic Eclecticism and Systemism
Pub Date : 2021-07-08 DOI: 10.1332/policypress/9781529209877.003.0004

This chapter theorizes about identity, change in capabilities and dyadic relations. It shows that the frame of reference for this work combines analytic eclecticism and systemism. Analytic eclecticism guides assembly of causal mechanisms into an integrated whole, while systemism — a means towards visual representation of hypotheses — provides the method. The chapter argues that the Taiwanese identity, the rise of China, cross-Strait relations, and the role of the United States are connected to each other and depicted within a figure created under the rules put forward by systemism. It then proceeds to review paradigmatic thinking and concludes that it is insufficient to provide a basis for theorizing in the complex and fast-paced context of the rise of China, shifting Taiwanese identity, cross-Strait relations and US influence. It discusses the means towards building and depicting theory: analytic eclecticism and systemism, and it assembles the causal mechanisms gleaned from the diverse academic literature into a visual representation.
