This paper makes the case for maintaining high standards in professional learning in education for ministry. Central to this, it argues, is the need to partner with reputable higher education institutions in the delivery of quality-assured training in theology and allied disciplines.

This article argues that in the face of an unprecedented crisis in ministry and mission in the Church of Scotland decisive action is needed in the area of the education and training of its lay members. It examines how the church’s theological and cultural heritage shaped a negative attitude towards lay leadership, and reviews attempts at reform in recent years as well as proposals regarding education and training contained in the Kirk’s current Radical Action Plan.

This article focusses on the formation and delivery of training and support for pioneer ministry in the Church of Scotland, by (i) reflecting on recent thinking on the place of theological education in enabling missional vocation; and (ii) presenting three case studies of approaches taken by denominations (in the Netherlands, Germany and Aotearoa New Zealand) which share a similar historical tradition with the Church of Scotland and which have seen similar trajectories of decline.

I recently found myself in conversation with a young woman reviewing her first year in theological education. She is typical of a growing number of students: though she has qualifications in another discipline (and a successful career based on them), now in her mid30s she has a sense of calling to some form of Christian ministry – not necessarily full-time ordained ministry in the traditional mode, though as she works through her vocation she is open to wherever the Spirit might lead her. In a previous era she might well have pursued this calling through volunteering in her local church rather than studying for a degree in theology, but changing cultural norms mean that there are fewer opportunities for such informal ministry and – like many of her age – she is frustrated by a perceived lack of connection between the concerns of the church and the issues with which she finds herself wrestling in everyday life. She wants to be part of an environment where hard questions are acknowledged and addressed in a context of faithful discipleship and has an intense desire to share the gospel with others in her neighbourhood, while being embraced T

This article begins by outlining some of the questions raised within the Church of Scotland in recent decades concerning the role and value of the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF) as the church’s subordinate standard. In addressing these, the article asserts that the content and teaching of the WCF continue to be relevant for Reformed churches today. By examining the work that went into the drafting of the WCF, the article argues that the cohesive picture of Reformed orthodoxy and catholicity that the WCF presents has immense practical value for contemporary ministry and church renewal in a challenging cultural moment.
