Emotions play an important role in human interaction, communication, coordination, and cooperation. The perception of emotional and affective state in present and past group's activities is a relevant issue since emotional awareness influence the outcome of cooperative work. While there is a growing interest in providing computational support for recognition and representation of emotions, few research efforts explore the potential of Brain Controlled Interfaces (BCI) to collect and present emotional awareness in synchronous collaborative systems. In this paper, we present an initial step in exploring how a low-cost off-the-shelf electroencephalograph (EEG) system can be used to provide emotional awareness information in synchronous collaborative editing systems.

This paper shows a module, named Forum Map, that recognizes texts (concepts and relationships) in Portuguese and constructs conceptual maps for collaborative environments. This module has as goal to summarize, graphically, the involved subjects/concepts in a forum with keywords and links between them and, then, aid teachers in the learning verification, as well.

In this century we have witnessed the emergence of systems such as Twitter, Facebook and other social media with millions of users. These post-massive systems provide different conversation media. This article discusses the conversation media popularized with cyber culture, their historical evolution, the criteria that characterize and differentiate them, and proposes a taxonomy for its classification.

Collective production communities, like open source projects, are based on volunteers collaboration and require newcomers for their continuity. Newcomers face difficulties and obstacles when starting their contributions, resulting in a large withdrawal and consequent low retention rate. This paper presents an analysis of newcomers withdrawal, checking if the dropout is influenced by lack of answer, answers politeness and helpfulness, and the answer author. We have collected five years data from the developers mail list communication and task manager (Jira) discussions of Hadoop Common project. We observed the users' communication, identifying newcomers and classifying questions and answers content. For the study conducted, less than 20% of newcomers became long term contributors. There are evidences that the withdrawal is influenced by the respondents and by the type of response received. However, the lack of answer was not evidenced as a factor that influences newcomers withdrawal in the project.

An Approach to Improve the Empathy of Text Interactions in Collaborative Systems
Pub Date : 2012-10-15 DOI: 10.1109/SBSC.2012.17
M. Júnior, Janisson Gois de Souza, C. Gonçalves
In general, research on the effects of computer-mediation on collaborative work has concentrated mainly on social-psychological factors such as deindividuation, attitude polarization, social presence and politeness tactics. A new approach for that is the use of NeuroLinguistic theory to determine what is the Preferred Representational cognitive System (PRS) of collaborators. Internal mental processes such as problem solving, memory, and language consist of visual, auditory and kinesthetic representations. An important question on this matter is: Classify the representation most used (PRS) on moment of the text interactions can increase empathy? This position paper presents a psychometrically-based neurolinguistic proposal to enhance the empathy in the Computer-Mediated Communication.

Sanar: A Collaborative Environment to Support Knowledge Sharing with Medical Artifacts Sanar:支持医疗工件知识共享的协作环境
Pub Date : 2012-10-15 DOI: 10.1109/SBSC.2012.14
Albert Moreira, Vaninha Vieira, J. C. D. Arco
Collaborative web environments can support medical knowledge construction since geographically dispersed individuals can share artifacts and build diagnoses together. Thus, health professionals and students can exchange views and experiences by discussing medical cases. The purpose of this paper is to present Sanar, a collaborative web environment where professionals and students can create discussions about new cases or contribute to existing cases' discussions. This solution promotes the growth potential of the group through individual contributions, with the aim of building the medical case. It also allows the study of the different mechanisms of interaction in a global context, through the potential of Web 2.0. The Sanar prototype was developed and evaluated by doctors living in Brazil and Spain, who indicated the usefulness of the approach.

Social Presence in Collective Writing Environments: An Analysis of Wikispaces

Recent studies have shown that social presence is a central concept in online education. Interactions enhance the social presence, which is characterized by the potential of participation, involvement and visibility of individuals in relation to themselves, to others and to the environment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify social presence in a collective writing environment - Wikispaces. The 3C Model, which guides the design and implementation of collaborative systems, was used for analysis. Results showed that the awareness element of 3C Model is fundamental for the identification of social presence in a collective space.

Virtual Caregiver: A System for Supporting Collaboration in Elderly Monitoring
Pub Date : 2012-10-15 DOI: 10.1109/SBSC.2012.30

This paper presents the Virtual Caregiver system, a collaborative ubiquitous computing application. The application scenario is the monitoring of an 86 years old patient diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and cardiac arrhythmia. The system consolidates data obtained from sensors in a wearable device to enable collaborative monitoring of elderly patients by relatives and health professionals using smart phones and social networks. From the classifier developed for this study, it was found 99.4% overall accuracy in a 10-fold cross validation test. We also obtained feedback from patients and relatives that have been useful to guide the development of a new version of the wearable, unobtrusive and adapted to the patient needs.

Classroom Experience: A Platform for Multimedia Capture and Access in Instrumented Educational Environments

Capture and access applications are developed to support the recording and later recall of multimedia information. The capture phase demands complex mechanisms for the acquisition and synchronization of user-generated data, while the access phase requires infrastructures that allow the personalization of the captured content. In this paper, we present a ubiquitous computing platform for the capture and access of educational activities in an instrumented classroom. Our approach uses context information in order to personalize the access experience according to users preferences. Transparent communication mechanisms complement our proposal by supporting data transfer and synchronization among associated storage services.
