Architectural competition is one of the important paths in the process of architecture education and professional practice. It is considered as a kind of collaborative learning and one of the crucial educational methods that adopt the development of student learning. Traditional educational methods are not always capable of responding flexibly to the new architectural topics and challenges during the design studio or in the practical market. Thus, architectural competitions tend to react more responsively to current issues and problems and enable students to demonstrate practical skills acquired from their education. This study presents several considerations regarding the importance and phases of architectural competitions to promote the skills of architecture students in the Egyptian universities. A survey study concerning the participation in competitions has been conducted. The results were analyzed and evaluated within the framework of the observations made during the competitions and the information obtained from similar studies in the literature review. As a consequence, positive outcomes were concluded. The paper aims at identifying the impacts of participating in architectural competitions on the student learning process during the design studio and the skills needed for professional practice.

. Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete has recently been highly considered by architects, engineers, and contractors according to its good features such as high tensile strength, durability, variety of shapes, sizes, and colours, and its environmentally friendly properties that make Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete suitable for thin, light, and free-form building’s envelope cladding. Five types of building envelopes were simulated using building performance simulation software (Design Builder Software Ltd – V. 7.0.0.116) on a prototype residential building in Cairo, Egypt; one of them is using conventional envelope finishing materials and compared with the other four types using various types of Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete envelope’s cladding to detect the effects of using Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete in building thermal performance, energy consumption, and also to choose the optimum type of them that will be suitable with local environments in Cairo, Egypt. Study results showed a large amount of heat transfer between the building’s internal spaces and the outdoor environment caused by building external walls construction materials in the conventional building that should be treated to improve building thermal performance. By using Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete envelopes cladding types, the study observes a reduction of heat transfer up to 60.47% that results in a reduction of energy consumption up to 10.42%. From these results, it is demonstrated that using Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete in a building’s envelope cladding can enhance a building’s thermal performance and thus reduces its energy consumption, related CO 2 emissions, operating costs, environmental pollution, and other negative impacts on the environment.

International scholars have recently demonstrated significant interest in fractional order filters (FOF) due to their greater design freedom and continuously stepped stopband attenuation rate. This paper presents a literature review on designing a fractional order filter based on the metaheuristic approach, which provides an optimum design technique and less passband and stopband error. The nonlinear, non-uniform, multidimensional, and multimodal FOF design issue error landscape is heavily exploited by the metaheuristic global search method. The algorithm's optimal coefficient values, which closely approximate the magnitude response of the ideal FOF, are reached at the completion of its repeated search routine

Recently, the increasing number of used tires in landfills has become a major issue. The tire waste is burned, which results hazardous gases that further affect the earth's natural ecosystem. The main objective of this research is to investigate the partial replacement feasibility of fine and coarse aggregates with treated crumb rubber on fresh and hardened characteristics of concrete. This is reducing the con-sumption of natural resources utilized in concrete. Total aggregates were replaced by crumb rubber (CR) in the concrete mixture at ratios of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% by volume. CR particles were treated by two methods, the first method is soaking in water and the second method is treating by placing CR particles in benzene. The findings indicated that the compressive strength decreased by 20%, 31.67%, 43.33%, and 53.33% than that of the reference mix at 28 days of curing in the case of water treatment, while it decreased by 10%, 16.67%, 33.33%, and 40% in the case of benzene treatment at the ratios of CR 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%, respectively. The increase in CR content reduced the modulus of rupture of mixes by 11.6%, 20.9%, 34.9%, and 44.18% in the case of treating CR particles with benzene at ratios of CR 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%, respectively. The modulus of elasticity decreased with a higher ratio of CR particles making concrete containing CR suitable for use in pavement, playgrounds, and machine bases. The mixture with the replacement of 2.5% CR of total aggregates and treated with benzene was considered the best mixture containing rubber as it had a little reduction in strength of compressive, modulus of rupture, and indirect tensile with comparison to the reference mix. When the ratio of CR particles was increased, the density of the mixtures decreased.
