Product data management (PDM) systems are gaining importance as central databases used for enterprise integration in the manufacturing domain. Multiple standards and standards-track specifications already exist for PDM. including the PDM Enablers standard from the Object Management Group(R) and the "PDM Schema" derived from ISO 10303, the ISO Standard for Exchange of Product model data. In the interest of testability and standards harmonization, we developed a "harmonized" testing approach that allowed test scenarios defined for one specification to be combined with test data defined for the other. The resulting tests could be realized with approximate semantic equivalence in both contexts, and the resulting lessons about testability are now having an impact on standards development.

In this paper we describe workflow analysis for web publishing based on a general stage-activity process model. Using a case study approach, existing web publishing methods used by major Hong Kong ICP companies have been evaluated. Based on the evaluation results and our observations, issues and problems of the existing methods are identified. A general process model, called the stage-activity model, is proposed which facilitates the development of a framework for automating the Web publishing process, incorporating workflow management. The results and outcome of this research contribute to a clear understanding of what challenges ICPs currently face and a solution to building an automating web publishing system. The framework can also be used to evaluate and select web publishing tools in the market.

We discuss a multicriteria transaction (MCT) model to address problems encountered in large-scale e-commerce transaction processing systems. A MCT is a generalized transaction where users can specify their preferences in a request by specifying multiple criteria in the transaction. With each criteria specification, a set of alternate execution paths is included. Thus, a MCT is less likely to fail. Moreover, the MCT model allows easy extraction of criteria from a set of transactions and, hence, optimal decisions can be made to achieve better customer satisfaction. We discuss the design of a MCT processing system and compare the MCT model to conventional transaction processing approaches.

Although testing is the most popular method for assuring software quality, there are two recognized limitations, known as the reliable test set problem and the oracle problem. Fault-based testing is an attempt by Morell to alleviate the reliable test set problem. In this paper, we propose to enhance fault-based testing to address the oracle problem as well. We present an integrated method that combines metamorphic testing with fault-based testing using real and symbolic inputs.

In this paper, we discuss an information-theoretic approach to the definition and validation of architectural metrics, and illustrate our approach on a sample example.

Business rules are statements about the enterprise's way of doing business. They become requirements that govern the operational system of the enterprise and determine constraints for any system developed or procured for an enterprise. This paper addresses an architecture for the specification, enforcement and distribution of business rules, as a way of achieving the interoperability of distributed information systems that support an enterprise. We explore the XML encoding of business rules, which allows their multiple representations, necessary for dealing with the heterogeneity of software and platforms inherent in large companies, or in e-commerce applications. Our ideas are illustrated with examples implemented in Oracle's framework for developing e-business solutions.

In this paper, we present an outline of a process for developing design products. The advantage of having a process for these types of projects is that it allows us to focus on the creative aspects of the project, by reducing team stress. The design process also allows us to integrate the creative aspects of a Web project with the more mundane aspects of software development.

This paper introduces a reverse engineering tool, JBOORET (Jade Bird Object-Oriented Reverse Engineering Tool). This tool is developed by adopting a parser-based approach to assist the activity of extracting the higher-level design and source models from system artifacts. A conceptual model is formulated as the knowledge representation. Multi-perspective design and source models are recovered by JBOORET based on the comprehensive program information extracted from source code. Its flexible user interface can assist users to browse the detailed information of design and source models by using the selection and compaction mechanism. This paper discusses the design principles and decisions of JBOORET and describes its implementation.

To support commercial-strength Web development, it is as important to utilize a process as it is in regular, non-Web information systems development. We evaluate the efficacy of an established OO/CBD development process (OPEN), in Web development and propose new and amended activities and tasks that should be included in OPEN to fully, support the new demands of Website construction and the delivery of business value on the Web. Sixteen new tasks are identified together with one new activity. Four subtasks of particular relevance to the interface based on usage centered design are also advocated.

The World Wide Web Consortium's eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and the eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) are standards defined in the interest of multipurpose publishing and content reuse. XML and XSL have been gaining popularity rapidly both in industry and in academia. Although much has been written on XML/XSL-based solutions, there exists a gap between theory and practice. In this paper we report our experiences in deploying XML/XSL in the implementation of two industry Web sites and summarize nine lessons we drew from our experiences.
