Chapter 5 chronicles the lives of monks and their movement to distant monasteries. It explores the economic and social connections between monks and their natal households to highlight the role monasticism plays in parents’ strategies to manage family size and composition. The chapter begins with a discussion of tensions inherent in Buddhism between religious aspirations and family obligations, then uses case studies to highlight how domestic entanglements can be both an impediment to and incentive for pursing a life devoted to spiritual advancement. The case studies set the stage for analyzing parents’ motives and means for sending a son to a monastery and the role that social networks play in moving sons out of the village and into urban institutions.

Chapter 4 provides a demographic foundation for the study. It begins by linking educational migration with the resettling of Tibetan exiles in Nepal and India in the 1960s, where they established the schools and monasteries where many Nubri children now reside. By comparing fertility differentials between Nubri’s residents and the Tibetan exiles, the chapter provides evidence that demographic disparity helps drive emigration through a supply-and-demand chain linking urban institutions in need of recruits with rural communities where parents have many children. The chapter concludes by documenting the directions and quantifying the magnitude of Nubri’s educational migration.

Chapter 8 explores the uncertainties of household succession that arise when parents relinquish the role of enculturating their children to village life. The analysis centers on the challenges associated with arranging marriages for sons and daughters who are raised in an urban environment where they develop new ideologies about love and livelihoods, as well as the compromises that parents and their children make to ensure household succession. The chapter concludes by describing how parents are recalling some sons from monasteries with the intention that they marry and assume responsibility for running the household, an emerging trend that highlights the ability of Nubri’s residents to adapt family management strategies to a rapidly changing society.

Chapter 10 uses the gradual abandonment of a religious center and place of retirement to illustrate how educational migration is affecting elderly care, reconfiguring religious life, and compromising villagers’ ability to uphold a full complement of annual Buddhist rites. It then introduces the concept of “disembedding” to discuss the pros and cons of a migration phenomenon that distances youths from their places of birth while enhancing their capacity to function, as ethnic minorities, in a complex and rapidly changing society. The chapter and book conclude with a young migrant’s expression of appreciation for the sacrifices her parents made so that she could lead a more comfortable life.

Chapter 1 introduces the topic of educational migration and foreshadows its consequences through the case of a mother who struggles to subsist alone in the village while her only son lives far away in a monastery. Following a brief description of Nubri, the fieldwork area in the highlands of Nepal, the chapter outlines a theoretical framework that includes migration as a means to manage family size and composition, social networks that facilitate migration, and cumulative causation that increases the intensity of migration. It concludes by discussing the methods of anthropological demography utilized in this study and the rational for adopting the household as the main unit of analysis.
