The paper presents preliminary data on leather and textile artifacts from the Timişoara Sfântu Gheorghe Square 2014 archaeological excavation, data that will be taken into account when initiating the conservation operations of the artifacts.The structure of the soil and the environmental conditions in the soil were favorable for the conservation of these artifacts for a long period, which made possible their discovery during the archaeological rescue excavations in the perimeter of the old fortress of Timisoara. However they show multiple, specific degradations, reported by us in other scientific papers as well: rigidity, deformations, cracks, cuts, ruptures, combined damage and also advanced functional wear. Rebalancing their state of conservation can only be achieved due to the rapid onset of conservation procedures.

Din colecțiile Muzeului Național al Banatului din Timișoara. I. Celturi izolate/singulare din Banatul Românesc / From the Collections of the National Museum of Banat in Timișoara. I. Isolated/Singular Socketed Axes from the Romanian Banat

On this occasion we chose to publish some socketed axes, that were discovered in the Romanian Banat, but without an archaeological context, pieces that can be included in that broader category of "isolated/singular" objects. For the piece from Anina (Pl. I.1.) we did not find any satisfactory analogy in terms of shape and ornament taken together. According to its general appearance, however, socketed axe is undoubtedly a product of the Late Bronze Age, and it is not possible to specify exactly whether it can be dated to the Late Bronze Age II stage (Bz C/2D - early Ha A1 phase) or Late Bronze Age III (Ha A). A possible analogy for the socketed axe from Butin (Pl. I.2.) is a piece from the hoard in Novi Bečej (Vojvodina, Serbia), but the edge is a bit wider, or a socketed axe from the hoard in Urovica also in Serbia. Much closer in shape and ornament is a socketed axe from the Szentgáloskér hoard in southern Hungary. Both hoards were dated to stage Ha A, so a late Bronze Age III. For the decoration on the socketed axe from Carani (Pl. II.1.) we did not find any satisfactory analogy. However, it is certain that this piece is also a product of the Late Bronze Age, without being able to make more precise chronological assessments. We thus propose a broad classification: Late Bronze II (Bz C/2D - beginning of phase Ha A1) - Late Bronze III (Ha A). The analogies for the socketed axe from Foeni (Pl. II.2.) are found mainly to the west of the Carpathian Basin and chronologically cover the wide horizon of the Late Bronze Age II (Bz C/2D - early phase Ha A1) and Late Bronze III (Ha A) periods, with a greater concentration in the so-called Kurd horizons after A. Mozsolics and Cincu-Suseni after M. Rusu and M. Petrescu-Dâmbovița.
Cincu-Suseni m . By the mobilization of millions of soldiers during the war years, the First World War was the first major conflict which brought the confrontation of the greatest European powers and also revealed the importance of the woman in the 20th century society. In her husband’s absence she became the mistress of the house, the belligerent states experiencing an exponential increase of women employed mainly in industrial work, agriculture, or even transportation. Women also joined the army auxiliary corps as nurses, technicians, telephone operators or telegraphists. As a consequence, many women have begun to become aware of their new roles in society and to openly display and assert their new attributes of independence.The First World War was a modern, technological conflict that tested and smashed the codes and expectations regarding male courage and masculinity in general. It represented a turning point and a catalyst for change in the history of the 20th century in terms of gender relations, women actively getting involved in restoring the global balance. Through all these, the dawn of a new era was anticipated. One of the aspects that most visibly influenced the change of women’s status during the First World War was their access to a wide variety of occupations in areas previously reserved only for men, once it became clear that this conflict would be neither short-term nor an easy one. From these points of view, the war was perceived as a strong impetus for female emancipation and for the exit of women from their traditional roles deeply rooted in the collective memory of the time.

The cultural relations were oriented, first of all, towards the following problems: the cultural situation of the Romanian minority in Yugoslavia; the cultural development of the other states belonging to the Little Entente (Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia); the participation of the states of the Little Entente in the Congress of the Committees of the Federation of Historical Societies of Eastern Europe (Prague, May 1932) – with the aim of harmonizing divergent views among historians in the region, etc.School relations, although much smaller in terms of quantity, were mainly focused on solving the problem of Romanian minority education in the Yugoslav Banat.The church reports followed, in particular, aspects regarding: the construction of places of worship in the states of the Little Entente; the requests of the Romanians from the Yugoslav Banat in order to establish a vicariate in Vârşeţ etc.In conclusion, the Western daily – considered, by many Banatians, as a guiding beacon, a moral model for presenting reality – captures the complex relationships within the Little Entente, with ups and downs, quite objectively, demolishing myths or counterfeit images of some leaders and promoting Banatism, as an integral part of Romanianism.

The collection of weapons in the National Museum of Banat includes two 19th century Hungarian ceremonial swords which feature many design and ornamental elements that can mislead the laymen in the field of old heritage weapons. Made in accordance with the tendencies of the historical style, the two pieces imitate the design of the end of the Middle Ages Transylvanian princely swords. Moreover, representations and inscriptions dedicated to the Transylvanian princes Gabriel Báthory (prince between 1608–1613) and Gheorghe Rákóczi I (between 1630–1648) are preserved on both sides of the blades.The two swords from the NMoB collection are part of a larger series of pieces inscribed with the names of Transylvanian princes, similar swords having been identified both in the online bibliography and in two other museum collections in our country: at the National Museum of Romanian History (Gabriel Báthory) and in the collection of the National Military Museum “King Ferdinand I” in Bucharest (Gabriel Báthory and Gheorghe Rákóczi II). The common element of all these swords is the blade, the basic component of the weapon, which is identical in all these pieces, from a typological point of view: it has a curved shape, with a wide fuller placed under the blunt edge, on both sides, more than two-thirds of the length of the blade. The decorative motifs and inscriptions are engraved in identical layout in all the analyzed pieces. Regarding the arrangement of the engraved decoration, it must be emphasized that it is laid out on superimposed registers, perpendicular to the length of the blade, in the same order on all the swords examined. As regards the inscriptions present on these blades, especially the princely portraits, we can appreciate that the main source of inspiration was the Transylvanian princely numismatic heritage, preserved to this day in museums or private collections. The princely portraits present on the blades of the swords are copies of representations present on the obverse of the vintage coins. The princely bust and the official title, which appear on the obverse of the coins, are elements shown on the reverse side of the blades, while the princely coat of arms, present on the reverse of the coins, is engraved on the reverse side of the swords.The swords from the NMoB collection were analyzed with an XRF spectrometer, and the results obtained show a very high similarity between the two blades: a very high concentration of iron and an insignificant presence of other related chemical elements. The other components of the swords are of different types and shapes and the materials used range from solid gilded silver to plain brass. Based on the results offered by the XRF spectrometer, we can conclude that the blades used on the two swords were made in the same time interval, using modern metal processing techniques. The differences found in the other components of the swords indicate a ranking of the pieces according to value, which corresponds to t
此外,剑刃两侧还保留了特兰西瓦尼亚王子加布里埃尔Báthory(1608-1613年之间的王子)和乔治Rákóczi I(1630-1648年之间)的图案和铭文。

In the collection of the Highland Banat Museum from Reșiţa, we can find a special artefact with the inventory number 34614, discovered in one of the Roman forts, from Banat region. It is a Roman shackle, found in the Roman fort of Vărădia Chilii, in 2006. From a typological point of view, the specimen found here, is certainly a shackle from the Roman period, which belongs to type 4 in W.H. Manning and to the type known as Kunzing in F. H. Thompson. It is part of a series of rather rare artefacts in the Empire, illustrated in Dacia by the discoveries made in the forts from Călugăreni, Buciumi, Ilișua, Mehadia and Bologa as well as in the research carried out in the military vicus from Porolissum, and also in the Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa mithraeum. From the context, it is clear that the artifact was used by the military troops stationed here to secure prisoners of war or even non-submissive individuals from inside the military and can be dated to the beginning of the second century, between the conquest of Dacia and the years 117–118 AD. Furthermore, based on the fairly large inner diameter, it appears that the shackle found in Vărădia, fixed the feet and it is called fetter.

It is a Roman shackle, found in the Roman fort of Vărădia Chilii, in 2006. From a typological point of view, the specimen found here, is certainly a shackle from the Roman period, which belongs to type 4 in W.H. Manning and to the type known as Kunzing in F. H. Thompson. It is part of a series of rather rare artefacts in the Empire, illustrated in Dacia by the discoveries made in the forts from Călugăreni, Buciumi, Ilișua, Mehadia and Bologa as well as in the research carried out in the military vicus from Porolissum, and also in the Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa mithraeum. From the context, it is clear that the artifact was used by the military troops stationed here to secure prisoners of war or even non-submissive individuals from inside the military and can be dated to the beginning of the second century, between the conquest of Dacia and the years 117–118 AD. Furthermore, based on the fairly large inner diameter, it appears that the shackle found in Vărădia, fixed the feet and it is called fetter.","PeriodicalId":273490,"journal":{"name":"Analele Banatului XVIII 2020","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129923294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper renders the content of two notebooks (texts – handwritten or sometimes dictated and sketches drawn by Florin Medeleţ). These excavation diaries cover the period between 1969 and 1972 and refer to both test trenches and field researches. They refer mainly to the excavations from Berzovia (1969, 1972), Remetea Mare (1970), Herneacova (1971). In addition to these, personal remarks on everyday events and interpersonal contacts were recorded. One has to mention that these notes were not intended for publishing!

Deliberately deformed shears from Early and Middle La Tene graves in the Carpathian Basin

Shears are commonly found in La Tène burials from the Carpathian Basin. The earliest such finds known in Europe date from the early 4th century BC Mediterranean cultural milieu. Towards the end of the same century they are adopted by the La Tène communities, where their morphology and meaning in the funerary process is changing. The purpose of these tools during the burial ritual seems to be similar to the one played by the swords. This fact can be deduced from several treatments that were applied to them like: position in the grave, similar decoration as some of the weapons or deliberately mutilation of the objects.

Searching the archive of the Serbian Orthodox Episcopate of Timișoara, one can observe an abundance of data regarding the most important events related to the works that were undertaken at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Timișoara. Exceptional names in the field of church art and sculpture competed for the beautification of the most important edifice of Orthodoxy in Banat in the middle of the 19th century. The results of art historians research and the conclusions they came to, indisputable in terms of the authors’ professionalism, brought many novelties, and the stated theme only wants to confirm, with historical data and archival documents, the exceptional activity of art makers in Banat.
