Project work: a moderator's view 项目工作:主持人的观点

Experience of moderating project work mainly in electronics, and also experience in providing INSET courses to CDT and Science Teachers in the area of project work, suggests that some teachers might find it helpful to have some comments about project work, its format and what is reasonable to expect.

Some years ago when the AEB A-level Electronics Systems syllabus was updated, the following work on sampling was introduced:time quantisation, sampling rate and Nyquist criterionamplitude quantisation and resolutionquantisation distortion.This seemed at first sight rather daunting. The sort of material which might appear in second year university courses on communications was to be presented to sixth formers whose maths perhaps stopped at GCSE!

Gor looked at the unhappy youth squatting on the floor of the cave. He saw bleeding knuckles gripping two misshapen lumps of flint. The lad's animal skin had been badly cured and was hacked, rather than cut, into an attempt at shape. That was the real cause of his trouble. In trying to chop up dinner he had shattered his family's knife.

SATRO interactive video project SATRO互动视频项目

Discussion between representatives of Philips and the Chairman of the Science & Technology Regional Organisation (SATRO) Panel has resulted in the establishment of the SATRO interactive video project. The aim is to contribute to the many efforts being, made to evaluate the potentialof interactive video (IV) in the classroom. The objectives are to:increase teacher awarenessextend effective usedevelop Inset programmesdisseminate good practiceprovide a mechanism to exchange information nationallymake suggestions to Philips.Four SATROS are involved: Birmingham, Surrey, Sheffield/South Yorkshire and Northern Ireland. The trial programme, which is being supported by Philips, who are supplying hardware and discs, is being undertaken in both primary and secondary schools as well as colleges of further education. A brief description of the work being undertaken in each region will give an idea of the breadth of the project.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are probably the most common method of constructing electronic circuits, being widely used in most electrical items, and now a common sight in schools and colleges. However, in industry, all the manufacturing processes are nearly always automated, yet schools rarely have similar facilities. One of these processes, the drilling of the holes in the PCB, is probably the most time-consuming and repetitive of these tasks—one which could easily be automated.

Digital fuel gauge 数字式燃油表

A digital readout fuel gauge for monitoring the liquid level in a fuel storage tank. The device utilizes a pre-amplifier circuit which comprises a voltage divider network utilizing the fuel gauge tank variable resistor on one side of the divider and a variable resistance on the other side which is connected to a signal processor. The output voltage of the signal processor is connected to the analog input of an analog to digital converter. The analog to digital converter changes the DC voltage levels to a four bit BCD code. The output carrying the code is connected to a decimal digit to a seven segment LED decoder. The digits are generated and displayed on LED indicator units. In addition, a voltage comparator circuit compares the output of the signal processor with a reference voltage and when said output is below a predetermined level, the comparator circuit initiates a warning signal.

Today's automobile industry is growing quickly with several manufacturers competing for shares in the market, from family saloons to transit vans. In this area of industry, reducing costs is a major exercise. A few pence on one component could add up to thousands of pounds over a year's production. To this end, nearly all the parts in a vehicle today have been greatly modernised. Until now, though, very few changes have been made to the wiring harness.
