Development of REBCO Power Transformers REBCO电力变压器的开发

Synopsis: REBCO superconducting power transformers, which are incombustible, lightweight and compact, are expected to have practical applications in equipment for substations and office buildings in urban areas. In recent years, there have been remarkable improvements in the performance of REBCO tape wires, which have the characteristic of a large critical current in highly magnetic fields. Their use is expected to reduce AC loss through the application of slit processing on the tape wire. Based on these advantages, the authors have developed element and system technologies of REBCO power transformers. Wire-scribing technology, coil-winding technology (for example, short-circuit characteristics), cryogenic technology, fault current-limiting (FCL) technology and a design study of a 66 kV/6 kV, 20 MVA transformer are examined.

Electromagnetic Stress Properties of Gd123 Monolayer Coils Gd123单层线圈的电磁应力特性

Synopsis : This study investigates superconducting and mechanical properties of monolayer GdBa 2 Cu 3 O y -coated conductor coils under large electromagnetic stress. We found that reversible superconducting properties can be achieved in the large hoop stress/strain states up to 1288 MPa/0.63% for the Hastelloy-outside-winding coil (coil A). This limit is larger than the results for the tensile test of the short sample. However, damage occurred near the current terminal at 640 MPa for the Hastelloy-inside-winding coil (coil B). It is considered that the degradation was due to the stress concentration at the edge of the current terminal. In the case of the Hasetelloy-inside-winding coil with a lap joint (coil C), the coil performance is limited by the shear stress of the lap joint.

Application of Bulk High-temperature Superconductor to Insertion Device for Synchrotron Radiation 块状高温超导体在同步辐射插入装置中的应用

Synopsis: In this study, we propose a new undulator structure based on a bulk high-temperature superconductor stacked array for insertion devices in synchrotron radiation facilities and free-electron laser devices. A strong periodic magnetic field can be generated in a short period from induced currents in the stacked bulk high-temperature superconductors. This study describes the principle of operation and features of the undulator, and shows the results of generation and control of the periodic magnetic field. We have also developed a numerical model for estimating the performance of the undulator. Excellent performance is expected at approximately 20 K.

Since the discovery in 2001, MgB2 has gained much interests as a new hope of superconductors for its applicability at temperatures of liquid H2 (~20 K) or liquid Ne (~27 K). Then large efforts have been dedicated to the processing of MgB2 wires. Ex situ and in situ techniques are two major techniques for the fabrication of MgB2 wires. The ex situ process uses previously reacted MgB2 powders filled into appropriate sheath tubes which are then fabricated into a wire. In the in situ process a mixture of Mg and B powders is encased in a sheath tube, and after the wire fabrication, the MgB2 core is synthesized in situ by the heat treatment. C or SiC nano-powders are effective dopants to enhance the high-field performance of MgB2 wires. Wires a few kilometers long have been produced via both processes. The diffusion process starting from a composite of Mg rod or pipe and B powder is another promising process in MgB2 wire fabrication. The connectivity of MgB2 grains is still poor due to the insufficient packing factor of powders, voids caused by the volume contraction during MgB2 formation, and the envelope of MgO and other insulating phase around MgB2 grains. This poor connectivity reduces the critical current density of MgB2 wires. Improved powder quality, fabrication techniques, and dopants may appreciably improve the performance of MgB2 wires. Presently, the main target of MgB2 wire application is direct-current use at 20 K, such as for MRI magnets. In this article, material aspects, fabrication process, superconducting performance and future possibilities of MgB2 wires are briefly surveyed.

Fe-sheathed MgB2 superconducting tapes were prepared through an ex-situ process and powder-in-tube (PIT) technique using powders treated in organic acid solutions. The treatment realizes the substitution of carbon, derived from the remnants of the organic solvents being adsorbed onto the surface of MgB2 grains, into boron in MgB2 and pulverization of MgB2grains. The amount of carbon substitution is x = 0.02−0.03 in MgB2-xCx. The carbon substitution is effective for increasing Bc2,and grain boundaries act as pinning centers. Therefore, this improves the Jc property of tapes in the high-magnetic-field region.Depending on the solution, the Jc values at 4.2 K and 10 T increase up to ten times compared to tapes using powders withouttreatment. These values are comparable to those obtained for the ex-situ processed tapes with the best-ever reported performance.Tapes using MgB2-xCx (x ≥ 0.05) powders clearly show weak grain coupling, and hence the enhancement of transport Jc is limited.

Recently the investigations on the local stress/strains and related properties in the engineered superconducting composites have been extensively carried out by using the pulsed neutron facilities, J-PARC TAKUMI. Firstly the key concepts are described in order to understand their mechanical-electromagnetic properties after the performance of TAKUMI is briefly introduced. Unique and important results have been obtained by the present diffraction studies. Highlights of the present review are the three dimensional description of strains in Nb3Sn filaments, the determination of force free strains at RT and 77 K for BSCCO and YBCO tapes, and of To for the BSCCO tape and Nb3Sn wires, which is the initiation temperature of thermally induced residual strains. Typically the local axial strain exerted on Nb3Sn filaments has been firstly measured along the TF coil used for ITER project in the world.

J-PARCの将来計画と高放射線環境下での超伝導・低温工学 J-PARC的未来计划与高辐射环境下的超导低温工程

The construction of the 1st phase Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) has been completed, and experimental facilities, (Materials and Life Science/Hadron/Neutrino) have been utilized for the users. Four major cryogenic systems (three of which are also superconducting magnet systems) have already been installed at J-PARC. There are also several further cryogenics/superconducting systems proposed as part of future J-PARC projects. This article introduces these new projects and briefly describes the cryogenics and superconducting technologies proposed for the projects.
