Abstract In this piece, I revisit my work in Urban Secularism by addressing the main critical points raised by five generous critics. These concern issues about the theoretical framing of the book, its methodological design and implementation as well as points concerning the findings of the book and some aspects that would have required more attention, such as the relevance of the far-right, race and class in urban secular politics. In the last section of this piece, I take on the invitation of two of the commentators to explore new questions that arise from their reading of the book.

In line with Jacques Berlinerblau’s Secularism: The Basics, this commentary highlights manifestations of secularism beyond the west. It argues that state regulation of religion and religious citizens is not one dimensional. Secularism takes different forms and contends with differing sociopolitical realities.

Political secularism secures the disestablishment of religion by government. Religions sense an undemocratic power grab, and hence demand the disestablishment of secularism. The obvious options for political religion are few, to either promote populist majoritarianism, and/or control one or another branch of government. The options for political secularism in an age of secularization are no less momentous. Berlinerblau’s book Secularism: The Basics should be widely read as a clarion call for post-post-secularism, where political secularism has been all along. Post-secular academics and pro-religion intellectuals are getting called to account for their erosion of republican principles and their tacit or open endorsement of religious populism. The restoration of political secularism would counteract rising tides of conservative populism threatening constitutional democracy and human rights.

Jacques Berlinerblau’s “Secularism: The Basics” asks how much and what kind of state separation from religion is required to secure the multiple notions of secularism that have come to dominate debates on faith in the global context. By organizing the book around a distinct set of issues, including questions about the meanings of secularism and its appearance in different contexts that benefit liberal democracy, Berlinerblau implicitly gives voice to the continuity of the tradition of secularism for a large segment of the academic field that has been evolving for the last three decades. While opposing secularism as a monocultural phenomenon, he grapples with the normative pre-definition of political secularism that refers to legally binding actions of the secular state that seek to regulate the relationship between itself and religious citizens and between religious citizens.
