Abstract Conducting studies in the field of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) has mostly been limited to Western cultures, and disagreements regarding the definition and assessment of this disorder are still debated. This study aims to examine the validity and Reliability of the Persian version of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale (CSBD-19). We conducted this cross-sectional online study from April to July 2022 among 200 Iranian women and men (100 women, Mage (SD)* = 38.5 years(12/79), 100 males, Mage (SD) = 48.5 years (16/26)). After back-to-back translations, we examined the Face, Content, and Construct Validity, Reliability, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The results indicated excellent Face validity (impact score >1.5 for all items), Content validity (CVI > 0.79), Reliability (Cronbach’s alpha ≥ 0.95, CI = 95% (0.92-0.98)). The pre-established five-factor model of the CSBD-19 (i.e., control, salience, relapse, dissatisfaction, and negative consequences) had an excellent fit to the data and demonstrated appropriate associations with the correlates. The Persian version of the CSBD-19 is a valid and reliable scale based on the ICD-11 definition of CSBD that may identify people at high risk for CSBD. This tool can apply in large sample size studies, and in a traditional context, such as Islamic countries. Mean (Standard Deviation)*

Abstract Worldwide, an estimated 12.7% of children have experienced child sexual abuse (CSA). CSA can lead to mental health, emotional, and behavioral consequences that often persist into adulthood such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideation, and maladaptive sexual functioning (e.g. sexual avoidance, compulsivity). Research suggests that CSA may lead to unhealthy pornography use, a form of maladaptive sexual functioning, in adulthood, though the psychological pathways governing this relationship are unexplored. In this study, 182 United States-based individuals (mean age 36.637 [SD = 11.333] years, 51.648% men) were surveyed using Amazon MTurk regarding CSA history and perceived cyberpornography addiction. Participants also completed the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ). We found that individuals who experienced CSA reported higher perceived cyberpornography addiction scores. Serial mediation model results indicated that the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) mediated the relationship between CSA and perceived cyberpornography addiction. The BIS is a dimension of the RST-PQ which resolves conflicts between the behavioral activation system (coordinates approach behaviors) and the flight-fight-freeze system (coordinates retreat behaviors) and is associated with trait anxiety. These findings contribute to the literature on the costs of CSA and identifies BIS sensitivity as a psychological system that can be targeted in therapeutic settings to reduce maladaptive engagement with pornography by CSA survivors.

Abstract Love addiction is increasingly gaining attention in academic literature, but it is often discussed as associated with other conditions, above all sex addiction, despite the lack of data supporting this choice. Our study examined the relationship between love addiction and sex addiction and the degree to which they are influenced by perceived social support. The study involved a clinical and a control group of 497 and 409 participants respectively. The clinical group showed significantly higher levels of love addiction and sex addiction, as well as lower levels of social support. Love and sex addiction were significantly correlated, whereas social support correlated with love addiction and, only in the clinical group, with sex addiction. Overall, the results seem to suggest that the constructs of love addiction and sex addiction are correlated but the overlap between the two is low. Moreover, their relationship appears to be influenced by a variety of factors.

Abstract The present study examines how a partner’s Problematic Pornography Use impacts the overall sexual experience of the Christian woman. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, we explored the intersection of gender, religion, and sexuality with 21 women of faith (the majority of whom had sought out mental health treatment) to better understand how the Christian woman’s sexuality shifts in response to her husband’s consumption of pornography. Three major themes emerged from the data: Discovery Impacts Desire, I Am Not Enough, and Sexually Disenfranchized. We discuss important implications for clinicians and clergy that promote the emotional, physical, and sexual safety of women.

Abstract The consequences of sexual addiction (hereafter SA) and compulsive sexual behavior (hereafter CSB) are manifold and can be challenging to qualify and quantify accurately. Individuals suffering from SA/CSB and their intimate partners typically encounter a host of devastating ramifications. The purpose of this comment piece is to highlight selected ongoing and often life-altering impacts, many of which will haunt affected relationships for long periods of time following discovery and disclosure. It is common knowledge that SA/CSB is almost always underpinned by pornography consumption. Given that the majority of pornography is now accessed on mobile devices suggests that modern technology plays a significant role in contributing to, sustaining, and escalating SA/CSBs. Our comment also presents an unsolicited letter from a self-identified sex addict, which laments the real-life consequences of SA/CSB.

Abstract This study investigated the processes and outcomes associated with religiously sponsored pornography addiction support group meetings. We identified a variety of themes using a collaborative hermeneutic interpretation method. Results showed that participants experienced shame due to their pornography use and that member-to-member sharing in meetings facilitated self-compassion, cohesion, shame reduction, and spiritual experiences. Participants reported outcomes such as adopting a lifelong recovery approach, viewing pornography use as a symptom, and prioritizing their relationship with God. In some cases, participants reported increased shame and distress from the significant focus in group on their pornography use, in addition to specific shame-inducing experiences in meetings.

Alcohol Use and Compulsive Sexual Behaviors in College Students: The Moderating Effect of Alcohol-Related Sexual Expectancies.
IF 0.3 Q4 PSYCHOLOGY, CLINICAL Pub Date : 2023-01-01 Epub Date: 2023-01-17 DOI: 10.1080/26929953.2023.2167139

Compulsive sexual behaviors (CSB) and alcohol use are prevalent among college students. Alcohol use frequently co-occurs with CSB; however, further examination of risk factors of co-occurring alcohol use and CSB is needed. We examined the moderating effect of alcohol-related sexual expectancies, specifically sexual drive and affect expectancies, on the association between alcohol use/problems and CSB among 308 college students from a large university in the southeastern United States. Alcohol use/problems and CSB had a positive significant relationship among college students high in sexual drive expectancies and high and average in sexual affect expectancies. These findings suggest that alcohol-related sexual expectancies may be a risk factor for alcohol-related CSB.

Abstract The current study explored men’s (N = 1,298) reports of sexual behaviors, hypersexuality, pornography use, pornography avoidance self-efficacy, and sensation seeking with respect to men’s sexual orientation (heterosexual = 68.5%, gay = 11.2%, bisexual = 16.0%, and uncertain = 4.3%). Results revealed that heterosexual men reported less frequent pornography viewing and higher pornography avoidance self-efficacy than gay, bisexual, and uncertain men. Heterosexual men reported lower hypersexuality than bisexual and uncertain men. Differences in sensation seeking behaviors by sexual orientation did not reach significance. Future research should examine factors contributing to hypersexual behaviors, sensation seeking, and pornography using behaviors and avoidance self-efficacy among men identifying with different sexual orientations.

Abstract The internet can deliver scalable and accessible treatments for addiction and sexual health. This study investigated reasons for changing pornography use and the feasibility and impact of a brief internet-delivered intervention. The intervention delivered goal setting and goal review, action and coping planning, self-monitoring, social support and shaping knowledge through the provision of information on how others have reduced their pornography use. Participants (n = 84) were predominantly from Australia or New Zealand and spent an average of 6.9 (SD = 6.6) hours per week viewing pornography. Reasons to reduce were addiction related (i.e., tolerance, repeated attempts to change, mood modification and negative affect such as guilt, shame, hiding) and decrements to mental health, relationships, achievement, and sexual satisfaction. Participants who enrolled in the intervention (n = 25) selected an abstinence goal (76%) and developed plans associated with avoidance of sites, people or devices and urge management. Barriers to action plans were related to temptation, triggers, and sub-optimal plan implementation. Post-treatment evaluation (n = 14) indicated reduced frequency (d = 1.04) and days spent viewing pornography (d = 0.83) as well as improved self-efficacy, mental well-being, and psychological distress. The study indicates that a brief intervention may be feasible for addressing problematic pornography use.

Black Women and Compulsive Sexual Behavior

Abstract Black women are underrepresented in the research on compulsive sexual behavior (CSB). The absence of research poses questions for therapists supporting Black women who present with CSB as they have unique specificities, which can also influence how CSB is formulated in this population. This paper recommends a thorough assessment for CSB following the ICD-11 diagnostic criteria and also explains and provides guidance on the usefulness of assessing for racism and discrimination. The paper discusses the specificities experienced by Black women, such as Adultification, Invisibility, Microaggressions, Colorism, and Intergenerational Trauma and how they can influence Black women in the United Kingdom. This article will present a case study to illustrate the importance of understanding the specificities of Black women with CSB.
