ABSTRACT Couples experiencing pregnancy and the transition to parenthood face many challenges. One of the most difficult challenges is attempting to remain balanced in their relationship. In order to discover how couples maintain balance, researchers conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative data using a contextual family therapy lens to investigate how couples keep their relationship ledger balanced during pregnancy. Results indicate that four key components help couples maintain balance in the relationship, namely: 1) Give and take, 2) Relational ethics, 3) Destructive and Constructive Entitlement, and 4) Exoneration. Couples who give attention to these four aspects were more balanced in their relationship and reported navigating the transition to parenthood and pregnancy more effectively. Results from this study provide a framework for therapists to guide couples in discussing important topics that should be discussed throughout the transition to parenthood.

ABSTRACT Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based couple therapy, views emotion as being central to the process of therapeutic change. As affect arousal of emotion is a somatic reaction, the purpose of this study was to focus on therapists’ interventions classified as noting and commenting on clients’ somatic cue of emotional experience, such as their facial expression or posture, in relation to depth of emotional experiencing demonstrated by clients in EFT couple therapy sessions. The sample included 13 therapists, each treating one couple during a single EFT training demonstration session. We coded therapists’ interventions (i.e., commenting on one partner’s somatic cue of emotion). Immediately prior to and following such therapist interventions, we rated the partner’s depth of emotional experiencing. The results of multilevel modeling demonstrated a significant linear increase in terms of depth of partner’s experiencing throughout the session. Furthermore, partners demonstrated a significant immediate increase in the depth of experiencing following somatically focused interventions. These findings suggest that interventions focusing on somatic experience of emotion may facilitate deeper experiencing for clients in EFT sessions.

ABSTRACT Objective This study examines whether parents involved in the child welfare system, due to substance abuse, who receive solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) counseling experience more hope and positive emotions than those receiving treatment-as-usual counseling services. Methods Randomized controlled trial design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of SFBT in primary substance use treatment services for parents (n = 123). Difference-in-Difference (DiD) estimation was used to assess the effect of SFBT intervention on hope, positive emotions, and negative emotions. Results DiD analyses showed SFBT parents had slightly worse scores on hope and emotion subscales at baseline and demonstrated slightly greater positive changes on all scales at posttest, though these findings were not statistically different from control group. Positive associations between SFBT and hope sub-scales were found; however, effects were not statistically significant. Conclusion SFBT may help increase positive emotions and hope in parents through a solution-building approach, but more research is needed.

ABSTRACT Some brief psychotherapies aim to increase parental sensitivity in the post-adoption period. However, there is a lack of systemic approaches to evaluate the psychotherapeutic process. The current study aimed to understand how parental representations changed during ten psychotherapy sessions of a brief intervention to promote parental sensitivity during the post-adoption period. A couple (35-year-old mother and 39-year-old father) who were having severe difficulties bonding with their recently adopted children (three, five, and eight years old boys) participated in the study. The construct ‘sensitivity’ was used to analyze the psychotherapy process using a theme analysis applied to the psychotherapy transcriptions. The frequency of the deductive themes and the construction of new ones (inductive) through sessions guided the analyses. Initially, parents interpreted their children’s intentions negatively, which caused a chain of hostilities in the relationship. Throughout the intervention, parents gradually became better able to represent their children in a more complex way and understand how their children communicate their needs. Along with the sensitivity improvements noted, the couple reported an improvement in the parent-child bond, and adoption breakdown was no longer a topic of the sessions as it was in the beginning.

ABSTRACT Group-based parenting programs can effectively improve parenting and child wellbeing; however, these programs are predominantly attended by mothers. Actively involving both parents has the potential to maximize program outcomes, as it allows the coparenting relationship to be targeted alongside parenting practices. Researchers suggest that one way of achieving this is to integrate coparenting content into existing, evidence-based parenting programs. Tuning in to Kids is an emotion-focused parenting program that provides an effective foundation for adaptation, given the benefits of the program and the nature of the content (i.e., parents learn the skill of emotion coaching that may also benefit the coparenting relationship). This paper outlines the process of adapting Tuning in to Kids through the integration of coparenting content and increased focus on the family system. The process was guided by the Medical Research Council framework for complex intervention development (i.e., identifying the evidence, developing a theoretical model, modeling the intervention process) and resulted in the development of Tuning in to Kids Together (TIK-Together). The program adaptation was designed to target Australian coparents and was informed by Australian evidence. TIK-Together aims to improve the coparenting relationship, in addition to supporting parenting practices and child emotional development.

ABSTRACT The aim of this qualitative case study is to understand the experiences of receiving solution-focused brief therapy for couples raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Five couples received six sessions of solution-focused brief couples therapy (SFBT) and were interviewed after the first, third, and last therapy sessions. Couples engaged in a semi-structured interview and were asked about their experiences in therapy. After using descriptive and in vivo coding to analyze the fifteen transcripts, the codes were placed into major themes. The six themes include: (a) therapy as a “blessing”; (b) positive experiences with the therapist; (c) helpful conversations; (d) reactions to the miracle question; (e) clarifying the couple and co-parent identity; and (f) the growth of the parent-child relationship. The current study is the first to identify parents’ experiences of treatment, while raising a child with ASD.

ABSTRACT Background Imprisonment is tied to relationship churning among romantic partners—all of which contribute to family instability. Imprisonment of a father is a serious critical life event because it can disrupt family relationships, contribute to negative outcomes for children, and aggravate material and social problems such as unemployment and social exclusion. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Transactional Analysis (TA) on couple's communication patterns in prisoners and their wives. Method The method of the study was semi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test, and waiting list control group. 22 couples (44 people) were selected by convenience sampling method. They were assigned into two groups; an experimental group (11 couples) and a waiting list control group (11 couples). The participants in the experimental group were given 10 sessions of Transactional Analysis (TA) while the waiting list control group received no treatment. MANCOVA models were used to analyze the data, which was obtained from implementing CPQ. Results The findings showed that communication patterns were improved between prisoners and their wives. Therefore, the principle of TA had a positive effect on enhancing communication patterns. Conclusion the TA approach is an appropriate way to reduce communication problems of prisoners and their spouses.

ABSTRACT Background A majority of sexual minority (SM; lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer) adults identify as religious and use religious coping strategies for dealing with life’s stressors. SM people report experiencing unique minority stressors of interpersonal rejection in family and religious settings as a product of religious doctrine that rejects same-sex relationships and attraction; however, the usefulness of religious coping strategies for handling minority stressors for improving the mental health of SM people is still unknown given mixed findings in previous studies. In addition, locating particular measures of religiously based minority stress may aid in identifying key factors affecting mental health. Method This study utilized quantitative data from a web-based survey to explore the relationships between religious coping, interpersonal religious discontent, minority stressors of family rejection and internalized stigma, and depressive symptoms of SM adults from religious families (n = 384). Results Moderation analysis demonstrated the significant interaction of religious coping and interpersonal religious discontent with minority stress factors for exacerbating the influence of greater minority stress on greater depressive symptoms when religious coping and interpersonal religious discontent were higher. In addition, those who left their religious affiliations experienced decreased minority stress and used less religious coping strategies. Conclusions Implications for family psychotherapy and future research are addressed.

William C. Nichols, PhD passed away on 19 June 2021 at the age of 92. I’m devoting part of this final issue of 2021 to honoring his memory and many contributions to the field of marriage and family therapy. Dr. Florence Kaslow has written a touching personal tribute. I will focus on his scholarly contributions, which are deep and impactful. Bill was a member of our editorial board in the 1980s; one of many leadership positions he held over the course of his stellar career. As Douglas Sprenkle noted: “This is not only a tribute to his indefatigable work ethic, but to Bill’s concern for people and issues at all levels of the [family therapy] profession” (p. xxiii, Everett & Lee, 2006). I met Bill for the only time in 1995 during a visit to The Family Workshop in Atlanta, GA, which housed his private practice. I was there to meet Dr. Gus Napier to discuss a predoctoral internship. I was keen to meet Bill during my stay. Craig Everett, a mentee of Bill’s and later a mentor to me, shared many stories of being Bill’s student and eventually his coauthor. Their book, Systemic Family Therapy: An Integrative Approach (Nichols & Everett, 1986), was my introduction to family therapy and continues to significantly influence my clinical work, teaching, and supervision. During my discussion with Bill, I shared my burgeoning interest in narrative therapy. I was aware of Bill’s emphasis on integration and wondered if he viewed my devotion to narrative practice as naïve. Rather than deflating my enthusiasm, he artfully drew connections between narrative ideas and other models of family therapy. He was always a teacher, even in our informal discussion. Bill’s intellectual contributions to family therapy will be his role as historian of marriage and family therapy and advocate for theory integration, including developmental perspectives (Nichols et al., 2000). At a time when therapists pledged loyalty to specific ideas and individuals, Bill presented a synthesis of concepts that would allow therapists to tailor their treatment to the client and the complexity of their presenting concerns (Nichols, 1988; Nichols & Everett, 1986). Everett and Lee (2006) paid tribute to Bill and his important work in their book When Marriages Fail. In the book’s forward, Gus Napier described Bill’s integrative approach to family therapy:
