Abstract. Background: Much experimental work has established that the passage of time is represented along a horizontal or a vertical mental timeline (MTL). Recent research ( Hartmann et al., 2014 ) discovered an additional diagonal MTL that develops from bottom left to top right. This study sought to extend Hartmann et al.’s (2014) work by exploring if the particular representations of diagonal timelines vary across linguistic communities. Methods: We conducted an experiment that recruited English and Mandarin speakers as participants. The experimental setups measured the participants’ space-time mappings along the bottom-left/top-right, top-left/bottom-right, bottom-right/top-left, and top-right/bottom-left axes. Results: There are cross-linguistic/cultural differences in the mental representations of diagonal timelines. While the English speakers displayed a salient propensity to conceive of time as oriented from bottom left to top right, the Mandarin speakers favored a timeline unfolding from top left to bottom right. Discussion: We assume that cultural artifacts such as writing direction may play an important role in affecting the horizontal dimension of people’s MTLs. The current findings refine the existing literature and demonstrate that distinct types of linguistic metaphors may respectively explain the vertical dimension of the MTLs for speakers of different native languages.

Abstract. Introduction: Past research has shown that psychological and behavioral factors, including anxiety, fear, and preventive behaviors, are related to well-being outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet little is known about the simultaneous effects of those factors in predicting satisfaction with life among vaccinated people. Methods: This cross-sectional study is among the first to examine whether COVID-19 anxiety, fear of COVID-19, and preventive behaviors predicted satisfaction with life among the vaccinated general public in Turkey. Participants were 1,017 Turkish adults (69.71% female; mean age = 36.28, SD = 10.83 years) who completed online self-reported questionnaires. Results: Results showed that increased levels of anxiety and fear of COVID-19 significantly predicted reduced satisfaction with life over and above the effects of sociodemographic and clinical factors. Discussion: The findings suggest the importance of tailoring and implementing interventions focusing on the improvement of the well-being of people during the pandemic.

Abstract. The soft-skills gap – the misalignment between the soft skills needed at the workplace and the soft skills possessed by the workforce – is considered to be widening, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents evidence from two focus-group interviews conducted in May 2021 and May 2022 in Greece. We wanted to understand the factors influencing the soft-skills gap and possible ways to narrow it. Participants were experts on soft skills, involved in various ways and roles in the teaching, training, and evaluation of soft skills. They expressed their concerns about the soft-skills gap and identified aspects that involved employees, employers, the work environment, and the broader social environment. The idea of a constantly changing environment led to the conclusion that adaptability, taking the initiative, and metacognitive skills are most important for university graduates. This conclusion came with a caveat: Learning should take place in real-life contexts, and universities should find ways to embed educational practices in social and work interactions, both inside and outside universities, working closely with local communities.

Abstract. Background: Although the recent past has witnessed a surge in the study of forgiveness, little is known about unforgiveness. This study aims to understand the nature and attributes of unforgiveness. Methods: We used a qualitative design. The sample consisted of 14 participants (22–32 years). We collected data using a semistructured interview protocol. The interview content was tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Results: We identified five themes: a complex process, multiple causes, benefits, negative consequences, and strategies to reduce unforgiveness. Challenges to trust, unforgiveness-generated behaviors, and mixed emotionality of transgressions made it a complex process. Transgressors’ misconduct, challenges to regard and relationship, and negative feelings associated with transgressions were identified as the main causes. Unforgiveness benefits victims by increasing their adaptability, self-worth, productivity, well-being, and relationship outcomes. Some negative consequences of relationships, emotionality, self-worth, etc., have also been described. Positive changes in transgressors’ behaviors and poor conditions and the likelihood of revictimization were described as mechanisms to reduce unforgiveness. Discussion: Contrary to previous views, which assumed unforgiveness represents only cold emotion and rumination, our findings reveal that unforgiveness is a complex process. Aside from certain negative consequences, it also serves some adaptive functions.

Abstract. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for mental-health services worldwide. Consequently, it also increased the length of the waitlists for mental-health services, putting a strain on adult mental-health services (AMHS) and the healthcare professionals dealing with these lists. There is little research about how psychologists managed waitlist practices, e.g., scheduling screening appointments, determining clients’ availability in an offered appointment, providing evidence-based bibliotherapy, or using priority waiting scales. It remains unclear what their experiences were with these practices and how effective these practices were during the pandemic. Method: The current convergent, concurrent mixed-method study investigated waitlist-management practices, synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data from an online survey ( n = 20 participants) applied in two local AMHS in Ireland. Results: The most common practices used by psychologists were opt-in systems, maintaining regular contact with clients, informing them about the waiting time, and providing evidence-based bibliotherapy. Screening was the least-used practice. The qualitative analysis highlights the emotional burden psychologists experienced from the use of waitlist practices, particularly when they had to inform the client of the waiting time or put a client back onto a waitlist. Discussion: Psychologists reported a lack of resources and increases in administrative workload as barriers to implementing practices. Managerial, organizational, and policy-based recommendations are proposed.

Abstract. Aim: Via online interviews, this study identifies the obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs) of patients diagnosed with Covid-19 and quarantined at home for 14 days, to determine the incidence of these symptoms, to detect OCSs in the early period, and to identify the associated risk factors. Method: This research was designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of patients who had tested positive in the real-time PCR test for Covid-19 and were quarantined at home in the Şanlıurfa Province of Turkey. The study sample comprised 800 patients contacted between January and April 2021. The data were collected online using a questionnaire that included sociodemographic characteristics, questions on postinfection changes, and the Padua Inventory, a valid tool for determining the level of OCSs. Results: The frequency of obsessive-compulsive symptoms during quarantine was calculated as 11.2%, and the mean Padua Inventory score was 48.19  ±  19.17. Conclusion: The results of this study show that patients quarantined at home for 14 days with the diagnosis of Covid-19 are less likely to exhibit obsessive-compulsive symptoms during this period. It also shows that the risk of OCSs was lower particularly in patients who had completed a university or higher education and had no previous psychiatric disease or chronic disease diagnosis.

Abstract. Background: In a goalkeeping task that entailed intercepting fast-approaching balls, the present research examined whether training under conditions more intense than those of a subsequent test yields a performance improvement. Methods: Fifty participants (38 males) carried out the goalkeeping task in two conditions: In the progressive-intensity condition, participants carried out three training sessions with increasing intensity (i.e., balls shot at increasingly faster speeds) that exceeded that of a pretest and a posttest; in the fixed-intensity condition, participants also carried out three training conditions but at a fixed intensity equal to that of both the pretest and the posttest. Results: Performance in the goalkeeping task improved from pretest to posttest equally under the two intensity conditions. Similarly, performance on a different task that required fast responses to visual targets also increased from pretest to posttest, likewise equally for the two intensity conditions. Conclusions: Overall, these results challenge the common belief in sports that more intense training than a subsequent test is beneficial for performance.

Abstract. Background: This quantitative study examines the unique effect of four different test-taking motivation variables (i.e., expectancy, importance, interest, and anxiety) on overall listening metacognitive awareness and its four dimensions (directed attention, mental translation, planning and evaluation, and problem-solving). Methods: A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 525 university students. Path model analysis was performed to analyze the questionnaire data. Results: Results showed that the overall listening metacognitive awareness was positively associated with expectancy and importance. Results also indicated various patterns of relationship between variables, of which the following are noteworthy: expectancy was positively associated with directed attention, problem-solving, and planning and evaluation; interest was only positively correlated with planning and evaluation; listening anxiety was related to higher levels of mental translation and planning and evaluation but lower levels of directed attention; and importance was positively correlated with all four dimensions of listening metacognitive awareness. Discussion: The implications for English listening teaching, learning, and testing are also discussed.

The Effect of Rejection Sensitivity on Fear of Intimacy in Emerging Adulthood
Q2 PSYCHOLOGY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY Pub Date : 2022-02-25 DOI: 10.1024/2673-8627/a000019

Abstract. Background: This research examined fear of intimacy during emerging adulthood. We attempted to determine whether rejection sensitivity has any effect on fear of intimacy through the mediational effect of interpersonal anxiety. We also assumed that remembered parental acceptance can have a buffering effect on the above relationships. Methods: The sample was composed of 679 (280 male and 399 female) university students. Data collection was accomplished through the use of self-report questionnaires, which measured rejection sensitivity, fear of intimacy, interpersonal anxiety, and remembered parental acceptance. Analyses of mediation and moderation effects variables were conducted through the use of the PROCESS statistical software. Results: Analysis showed that there is a partial meditational effect of interpersonal anxiety on the relationship of rejection sensitivity to fear of intimacy. Further, remembered maternal acceptance had a protective effect on the development of fear of intimacy in young women who are sensitive to rejection and have high interpersonal anxiety. Discussion: Rejection sensitivity seems to have an effect on the development of fear of intimacy through increasing interpersonal anxiety, especially in females. These relationships seem to be moderated by maternal acceptance. Conclusion: Student counselling would be beneficial to help students in this transitional period become aware of anxious interpersonal patterns and regulate their reactivity when facing perceived rejection cues in their interpersonal relationships.
