If the question is asked of Australian Conservators -“What research work are you currently carrying out?”, the answer is invariably, “Nothing much as I haven’t the time”. However, a recent survey has shown that research and materials testing is being carried out on quite a variety of different topics. This report is provided to inform all conservators of current work, hoping that it will improve communication and co-operation, thereby promoting research and avoiding duplication of topics already being investigated.

The author identifies composite materials of a carved limestone sculpture and the nature of it’s decay due to atmospheric pollution and surface contaminants. The sculpture was transported, for cleaning to AMDEL Laboritories. These procedures successfully removed salts and living micro-organisms. Subsequent preservation measures including a maintenance programme are discussed.

Ethnographic objects are often decorated with materials that become friable with age and usage. This paper briefly examines some of the structural and chemical components found in ochres, the material commonly used on bark paintings and wooden objects. Detailed information is also provided on the successful use of two synthetic resins. Paraloid B72 and Beva 371, as consolidating materials for the ochres.

AbstractEarly forms of colour photography used additive techniques to record colours, as opposed to the subtractive techniques of modern processes. Additive processes employed a microscopically fine screen of red, green and blue filters, and a silver image which allowed varying degrees of light through these filters. Research centred on the Finlay Plates housed at the Australian War Memorial which were taken in the final years of World War I. In order to more fully understand the role of the silver image and its contribution to the colour and the form of the final photograph, a number of positive silver images were made from an original World War I Finlay negative. Initial experiments were aimed at establishing the role of the developer in forming the image and the effect these would have on the final colour. Further investigations centred around manipulation of the already developed image to alter its microstructure and therefore the overall colour of the final Finlay Plate. It was found that the microst...
