A DIY approach to pervasive computing for the Internet of Things: A smart alarm clock 物联网普及计算的DIY方法:智能闹钟

This paper explores how the recent development of low-cost System on a Chip (SoC) boards can be used by the Internet of Things (IoT) DIY community to assist the process of smart object innovation through the example of an intelligent alarm clock. The alarm clock will combine existing traffic and weather web services with local temperature sensor readings to provide a suitable alarm time for the user. Included is a brief review of currently available IoT components and state-of-the-art alarm clocks offering augmented features. Provided is a description and justification of both the hardware and software components of the alarm clock. CPU and memory resource testing demonstrate the computational suitability of the SoC device in the context of an intelligent alarm clock. User feedback regarding the features of the alarm clock provides suggestions for further development.

A mathematical model for a GA-based dynamic excess bandwidth allocation algorithm for hybrid PON and wireless technology integrations for next generation broadband access networks 基于遗传算法的下一代宽带接入网混合PON和无线技术集成动态剩余带宽分配算法的数学模型

Optical and wireless integration scheme merges the high-speed and high-capacity of the optical networks with the low-cost, wide-coverage and mobility features of the wireless counterparts for the Subscriber Stations (SSs). It is also financially viable for the telecommunication service providers, particularly in the rural area where the development of the optical infrastructure or expansion of the exiting telecommunication solutions are either too costly or unreachable. In order to successfully integrate the two technologies, there are some technical concerns in terms of Architectural aspects, Physical Layer features and Media Access Control (MAC) issues. This paper is mainly focused on the MAC-related issues, particularly the dynamic excess bandwidth allocations where the hybrid Passive Optical Network (hybrid PON) is employed as a back haul solution for the wireless counterpart. A mathematical model for a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based dynamic excess bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is proposed and implemented in order to generate the optimum/near optimum solutions for the problem of excess bandwidth allocations over the converged scenario between hybrid PON and wireless technologies.

A real-time falls detection system for elderly 老年人跌倒实时检测系统

A real-time fall detection system is proposed to distinguish various falls during daily activities. Falls are detected in two steps: first a hierarchical algorithm is used to classify the motion and motionless postures such as lying, sit-tilted, sit-upright, standing and walking; it then analyzes whether the current lying or sit-tilted postures are normal or abnormal, based on posture transition and users' current position. If an abnormal lying or sit-tilted posture is determined, a fall alert will be delivered immediately; if a possible fall is raised (such as normal lying but on the ground), then a music based alert starts playing, and a fall or normal lying will be determined according to whether the user stops the alert music. The advantages of the approach are that it can distinguish various falls efficiently (in real-time within a smart phone), and can also significantly improve the “true positives” for the slow falls with a sit-tilted posture, as well as the “true negatives” for the normal lying compared to the existed fall detection algorithms.

OFM transmission of wireless channels over SMF and POF optical fibers 在SMF和POF光纤上无线信道的OFM传输

This paper introduces the transmission of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) and LTE wireless channels over a coupled Single Mode Fiber (SMF) and Multi-mode Fiber (MMF) to the residential gateway using Optical Frequency Multiplication (OFM) at the central office. At the coupled SMF and MMF junction, an offset launch technique is applied to improve the signal bandwidth. The transportation of mm-wave frequencies over fiber cables causes modal and chromatic dispersion. This paper discuses the analysis of this technique in improving the signal bandwidth by mitigating the pulse broadening induced by the MMF cable.
