Contracaecum multipapillatum infects fish as intermediate hosts and humans as accidental hosts when consuming raw or semi-cooked fish meat, causing Contracecosis. This risk to human health makes important to determine prevalence, infection intensity and anatomical location in fish for human consumption through artisanal fishing; and the physicochemical parameters influence of water on infection in fish. 214 fish were collected in 6 rivers from Canas, Guanacaste, Costa Rica and 203 fish in Izabal Lake and Rio Dulce, Izabal, Guatemala. Water physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen) were taken at fishing sites. The infection prevalence was 16.8% and 25.1% in Guanacaste and Izabal, respectively, 36 fish were found infected with 105 larvae of the third stage (L3) in Guanacaste and 135 larvae were found in 51 infected fish in Izabal. A higher affinity of L3 was observed in visceral organs (22.4% in Guanacaste - 25.1% in Izabal) and lower affinity in muscle tissue (2.0% in Guanacaste – 1.0% in Izabal). Infection intensity was proportional to the size and weight fish (1 larva in 13 fish with average weight and size of 66.7 g and 17.5 cm in Guanacaste, and in 7 fish with weight and average size of 214.9 g and 28.4 cm in Izabal; while 14 larvae were found in a fish of 148.8 g and 24 cm in Guanacaste and 12 larvae in a fish of 260g and 40 cm in Izabal). No association was observed between the water physicochemical parameters and the fish susceptibility to infection.

With the aim of providing an information baseline about wild life hunting of peasant communities in the Amazon foothills, a list of species evaluated in three sectors of the Alto Fragua Indi Wasi National Natural Park in the department of Caqueta is presented: Fragua Grande, Fragua Chorroso and Pescado, obtained within the framework of the characterization of wildlife hunting activity that was developed between the months of April and December 2018. The list was obtained of 43 semi-structured interviews that were carried out with peasant communities and personal observations of the activity. A total of 20 species of cinegetic use belonging to the classes Aves (3 species) and Mammalia (17 species) were registered. Of the registered species it was found that three of them are in vulnerable state (VU), one in critical state (CR) according to the Resolution 1912 of 2017 for Colombia were reported and according to the IUCN classification, 13 of them were at lower critical (LC), 5 of them in a vulnerable state (VU) and one was nearly-threatened (NT). The list presented and its state of conservation contribute to the management of wild life hunting within protected area.

The weight-length relationship is an important tool in the studies of fish biology, physiology and ecology, as this relationship is useful for determining weight and biomass, indicating conditions and allowing comparisons between the growth of different populations, in addition, this relationship can also be used to assess the degree of health of species in the environment. The objective of this study was to present unpublished data on the weight-length relationship (LWRs) of the species Hypostomus ancistroides and Corydoras flaveolus. The fish were sampled in the months of January and June 2013 in rivers of the Ipanema National Forest, sub-basin of the Ipanema River, collected through sieves and trawls. 91 individuals were captured, distributed in one order and two families 52 from Hypostomus ancistroides and 39 from Corydoras flaveolus. The results of this study showed that the Hypostomus ancistroides is outside of what is expected for parameter “a” 0.0058 (0.0043-0.0072), and Corydoras flaveolus is outside of what is expected for parameter “b” 3.75 (3.38-4.11), these date consisted of important biological information for freshwater fish, as this relationship justifies the search for mathematical improvement of the indices, as well as standardization of the types of condition factor used in studies with the same species, facilitating comparisons and, consequently, management and conservation actions.

Wild Animals (WA) are always present in global discussions during the last decades on conservation issues. Brazil presenting the greatest biodiversity on the planet, makes it a strong interest in this wealth, not only nationally, but also internationally. The purpose of this article is to quantify the illegal commercialization of AS, for the consumption of the diet in some cities in the Amazon. The methodology used was bibliographic research, the application of questionnaires and interviews to the regulars of open markets in eight cities in the state of Amazonas. The results showed that the interviewees of the open markets bought illegally wild animals, as a source of dietary protein in their diets. The most commonly appreciable animals in the diet are mammals. The study concluded that the illegal trade in wild animals in these cities is mainly associated with cultural issues and lack of economic options in the region. Thus, to alleviate this problem, it is necessary to implement Environmental Public Policies, Environmental Education, stricter inspections and encourage the creation of SA in captivity.

Heat stress is a key factor affecting the productions of the animals. In laying birds, it could cause loss of body weight and high mortality. To this end, a study was carried out in a naturally ventilated, tier-caged layer house to evaluate the environmental parameters and the heat stress index within the building during hot weather period. Throughout the study, the environmental parameters (air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity), inside and outside the experimental building were measured and recorded. The heat stress index using the temperature-humidity index (THI) was also estimated. The results of the study indicated that laying birds in this study were most of their lifetime subjected to hot conditions which could have a significant effect on their performances. It was also found out that the air velocity within the building was very low (0.07 ms-1 to 0.58 ms1) which could not provide a cool environment for the birds. The heat stress index (THI) inside laying bird building was found to be mostly influenced by high relative humidity compared to ambient temperature. Therefore, it would be appropriate if the airflow distribution inside the poultry building, in this study, could be evaluated using computational fluid dynamics to understand the velocity profile within the building. This could assist engineers to redesign the building and make it appropriate for laying birds in the humid tropical climate.

Globally, development and application of vaccines to control fertility in animals is growing relentlessly. Their productive benefits to animal management and welfare are corroborated, while improvement in public perception on their positive impact. This paper reviews current developments in this area, particularly, immunocastration vaccines, upon assessment of application results in recent years. Main targets of these vaccines are proteins of the zona pellucida, the structural proteins of spermatozoa as well as the sexual hormones. Various GnRH-based vaccines with proven effectiveness and efficiency for immunocastration of males and fertility control in females are commercially available today. However, issues like a reduction in the number of immunizations, achieving of increased immunogenicity, and the development new formulations to facilitate the application and release of vaccines in the wide diversity of the animal habitats and in the different conditions of animal husbandry, should be addressed. Fertility control relied on methods that guarantee productive efficiency and animal welfare is an incessant need of modern veterinary medicine practice.

A case of a pig stallion of the landrace breed, 6 years old and weighing 250 kg, is reported, which was attended by the outpatient clinical service of the Large Animal Medical-Surgical Clinic area of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics from the University of Cordoba. The anamnesis indicates that the player presented redness in the left scrotal region, as well as a marked asymmetry between both testicles with a predominance of the left, pain and discomfort in previous days, for which punctures were performed with fluid withdrawal, but with recurrence later. Taking into account the remarkable severity of the event and the decrease in reproductive function, as well as the deterioration in the health and well-being of the animal, it was decided to perform a bilateral orchiectomy with scrotal resection. During the surgical procedure under general anesthesia, when the tunica albuginea was incised and the left testicle was completely exposed, a 720 ° torsion of the spermatic cord was evident, as well as an increase in size and blackish color, indicating ischemia and necrosis. The importance of knowing that in cases of testicular enlargement, torsion should be considered as a diagnostic option is concluded, as well as the blackish coloration of the organ as indicative of complete ischemia, which confirms a testicular torsion of more than 6 Hs, the minimum time reported in the literature to cause irreversible damage to the testicle.

This article reports a clinical case of a 4-year-old Creole mare, who comes to consultation due to lameness and an increase in the size of the tarsal joint in the right hind limb resulting from trauma. A clinical examination of the patient is performed in which a 5/5 support claudication is evident with notable compensatory movements; to palpation refers pain and swelling is evident, increase in temperature and size. Hemogram, blood chemistry, evaluation of joint fluid was performed through cytology and culture; in turn, an imaging diagnosis is made during several periods of the evolution of the case, conventional radiography is performed in which there are findings such as proliferative reaction, presence of osteophytes, ankylosis, among others; The ultrasound evaluation presented findings such as decrease in synovial fluid, increase in size and echogenicity of the synovial membrane and presence of fibrin bands present in the joint fluid. The therapeutic approach is performed through analgesic drugs, joint lavage and corticosteroid infiltration, and intraarticular infusion with 10% DMSO. The present case describes the imaging follow-up of an equine patient with degenerative joint disease of the tarsus, which provides tools to the veterinary community for the correct diagnosis of joint disease in the equine.

The objective of this work was to determine the presence of virulence factors, heavy metal resistance and antibiotic in 65 Enterococcus strains isolated from fecal content of pigs, collected in the Valle Inferior del Rio Chubut. Exopolysaccharides production was the most frequent virulence factor and was detected in 45 strains, while gelatinase activity was displayed by only one strain; same result was obtained for hemolytic activity. Agar plates test revealed that 25 strains were resistant to zinc (≥12 mM) while 64 strains exhibited intermediate copper resistance (4-12 mM). All strains selected on the basis of their resistance to zinc exhibited resistance to tetracycline, two of them resistance to vancomycin and only one resistance to teicoplanin. All strains selected were sensitive to ampicillin. PCR techniques allowed the amplification of tetM gen in 22 strains among the 25 that showed resistance to tetracycline. The results obtained in this study would evidence the widespread usage of zinc and tetracycline as growth promoters in pig feeding. This practice exerts selective pressure in animal bacterial species and contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance.
