Photonic band-gap (PBG) structures, also known as photonic crystals, are one of the crucial technology factors leading to the achievement of several functions that an all-optical network asks for. PBG-based devices have numerous potential functional locations within the advanced all-optical network architecture. In the paper the state-of-art and also the possibility of potential future applications of PBG structures in optical telecommunication systems are reviewed, and their impact on the development of all-optical transport networks is discussed.

The development of the method of single-mode fibers for a given values of phase and group velocities of propagated wave at a fixed frequency is presented in this study. The received refraction profile provides minimal dispersion. New types of gradient single-mode dielectric fibers have a wide bandwidth of a single-mode regime and increased effective area of light flow.

A fast phase locked loop applied to the internal electrooptical phase modulator can sufficiently improve the stability of offset frequency in coherent lasers systems. The frequency stability of 1 Hz between the signal and local laser oscillators is demonstrated.

The laser wavelength dependence on the temperature, polarization current, aging can represent a problem in networks where multiple multiplexing and demultiplexing operations occur. In this contribution we evaluate the system performance dependence on the laser frequency alignment, considering demultiplexing performed by some of the commonly used filters.

New hybrid circuit schematics are proposed for frequency multiplexing under condition of laser heterodyning and for channel commutation of the fiber optic communication networks using microwave (MW) acoustooptical devices based on planar acoustic phased-arrays (PAPA). It is shown that 10/spl times/256 multiplexers and 256/spl times/256 commutators can be realized under operation in the MW band of control radio signals from 0.5 to 7.0 GHz.

Laser emission in the visible from an all-solid-state device is still a demanding challenge, especially when optical fibers are being used. The paper presents results of investigations of the upconversion process and describes basic properties of the laser: saturation and transient effects, spectral properties and the output power of the emitted beam in the green.

Novel highly efficient algorithm for the solution of 2-D problems of the wave scattering from homogeneous dielectric cylinders of arbitrary cross-sections is presented and its applications to simulate optical waveguide components based on dielectric resonators (DR's) are discussed. The algorithm developed is based on the concept of analytical regularization (semi-inversion) of the singular integral operators.

Faced with competition and explosive growth of Internet usage, Polish telecom operators need to provide more transport capacity quickly, flexibly and economically. Large and medium sized businesses demand high capacity fiber access. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (D-WDM), at N/spl times/2.5 Gbit/s level, is technology of choice for network upgrades now, with N/spl times/10 Gbit/s systems considered for near future. This paper attempts to identify reasons for the difference and suggest optimum choice for Poland, taking into account conditions like economics and geography. The conclusion is generally to stay with G.652 fiber in medium term-5 years or so, rather than massively invest in nonzero-dispersion shifted fiber plant right now.
