This paper discusses and suggests studies dealing with development of protocols for mental health interventions in the emergency and crisis situation caused by COVID-19. There is evidence of repercussions for mental health and limitations on the means for dealing with the pandemic, caused by the prolonged isolation and confinement imposed by quarantine measures, observable in contagion suspects, COVID-9 patients, family members, and members of the healthcare teams involved in frontline treatment. However, there is scant technical and scientific literature on intervention protocols for people obliged toendure withdrawal from social and employment activity because of the pandemic.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is a public health emergency of international interest and also represents a challenge to mental health, especially for children and adolescents that are still in development. For those youth who already have a history of mentaldisorders, the risks are greater. In order to lessen the consequences of the uncertainties associated with the pandemic and with home confinement, governments, communities, schools, parents and mental health professionals need to be informed and address these issues effectively and immediately. This article aims to guide psychiatrists who need to provide information on how to support and protect the psychological well-being of children and adolescents.

The COVID-19 pandemic scenario poses unprecedented challenges for society. Despite the importance of immediate measures aiming to prevent the spread of the disease, care for affected individuals and measures to minimize economic and social impacts, addressing issuesrelated to the mental health of the general population, are also crucial. Interdisciplinary contributions related to mental health involve understanding the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms that support habits, attitudes and beliefs. This understanding is essential to maximize the effectiveness of strategies that require significant changes in the way people behave, conceive and plan daily activities. This article discusses approaches in the fields of psychiatry, psychology and related sciences with regard to the management of issues related to behavioral change, nutrition and physical activity habits, work, and vulnerable age groups.

Is it possible to become contaminated through thought? Not objectively, but subjectively yes. The construct referred to as “mental contamination” is still poorly investigated and rarely mentioned in Portuguese-language scientific literature. Therefore, the aim of this article was to review studies that correlated mental contamination to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) over the past 5 years. The search was performed on the PubMed, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases; after applying the inclusion criteria, six studies were fully reviewed. Based on the analysis of samples, instruments adopted, results found and limitations reported by the authors of each study, we conclude that: 1) few studies have examined both clinical and non-clinical samples; 2) the Vancouver Obsessional Compulsive Inventory-Mental Contamination was the instrument most commonly used to measure mental contamination; 3) mental contamination is related to other phenomena that are also present in OCD (e.g.,disgust propensity); and 4) the studies commonly have sample limitati ons. Towards the end of the text, we present the necessary steps to encourage Brazilian scienti fi cresearch on mental contaminati on and also suggest how mental health professionals can guide pati ents with OCD during the pandemic, to reduce suscepti bility to mental contaminati on.

This text presents reflections and technical and scientific guidance on the COVID-19 outbreak, a critical emergency situation with social and economic repercussions and implications for the health of populations and of the professionals directly exposedto contamination risks. The main focus of this paper is on the mental health issues involved, considering fear of exposure to the virus and the isolation and confinement policies and quarantine procedures adopted in several countries. Discussions are based on the scientific evidence and inferences presented in Brazilian and international literature with relation to the impacts of COVID-19 on people’s health, especially the most vulnerable groups, and the possibilities for containing, mitigating, and preventing symptoms of mental disorders. Both observed and predicted impacts on the mental health of professionals working on the front line of the emergency situation are discussed.

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 is already a worldwide catastrophe. It has caused an unprecedented crisis in contemporary history, which also requires a response from mental health clinicians and researchers. In this article, the authors clarify some concepts in the field of psychological trauma involved in this context. In response to the mental impact of this pandemic, atutorial including a psychological support strategy is contemplated, with emphasis on the psychopathology resulting from stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Objectives: To understand how the use of psychotropic substances is present in the lives of nurses and the possible consequences of this use, and to analyze the factors of personal involvement of these professionals with psychotropic medications. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted with 87 nurses from the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Sao Paulo. The questionnaire was disseminated through virtual social networks (WhatsApp and Facebook), mailing lists and other digital platforms. Results: Of the 87 nurses who participated in the study, 77 (88.5%) said that they had already used at least one of the psychotropic drugs surveyed. After alcohol, the most frequently cited class of drugs was tranquilizers, sedatives or calming agents. We observed that over half of the nurses (49 of 87; 56.3%) said that they had used some tranquilizer, sedative or calming agent at some point in their lives. The third class of psychotropic drugs most frequently cited was centrally acting analgesics (codeine and tramadol). Conclusions: It was evident that younger nursesand those with fewer years of education are the most vulnerable ones. We emphasize the need for a societywide look at this professional category. Afterall, what will happen if the caregiver gets sick?

Occupational psychiatry involves the merger of knowledge from two medical fields and their areas of activity, namely, occupational medicine and psychiatry. Occupational psychiatry is dedicated to understanding and planning interventions in the work environment and in organizations, aiming to analyze the interaction of the multiple dimensions that characterize people, groups and organizations, with the purpose of building strategies and procedures that promote, preserve and reestablish the welfare. Medical studies in this specific area and about its importance are limited, despite the growing interest in the topic of mental health and work. Data collection was carried out in a non-systematic way. Articles were searched using free-access electronic databases (SciELO, BVS, CAPES, and LILACS), focusing on publications from the latest 70 years, i.e., between 1950 and 2020. The following descriptors were used: labor psychiatry, occupational psychiatry, occupational psychiatry and industrial psychiatry. The inclusion criteria were: articles that addressed the descriptors selected, that were published in the last 70 years, and that were available free of charge in whole or in part. The database was supplemented with materials recommended by specialists in the subject. There is a scarcity of medical studies on the field of occupational psychiatry designed to demonstrate its relevance, and little emphasis isplaced on the organizati onal and governmental levels, despite the importance of this area to improve our understanding of psychosocial risks and allow us to map them and treat them in an appropriate way, thus aiming not only for the individual mental well-being, but also for the collecti ve well-being.
