STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN VIRTUAL CREATIVE WRITING: DEVELOPING A CREATIVE WRITING STYLE 学生参与虚拟创意写作:发展创意写作风格

Writing is not a stand-alone mental activity; it is inextricably linked to other forms of creative design, such as drawing and music composition. Writing is a highly sought-after skill in today's digital world. Creative writing is defined as the fluent exchange of concepts in an original manner through the construction of logical connections between them in written form based on the individual's schema. This article discusses a study that examined factors affecting student engagement as a lens through which to examine students' perceptions of their creative writing class participation. These interactions emphasize the complexities of student engagement and promote the accuracy of the instruments and metrics used to study it. Cognitive engagement is concerned with a student's internal investment in the learning process, which includes inner psychological characteristics or nonvisible characteristics that encourage effort in acquiring, comprehending, and mastering the knowledge or skills required for academic work. As a result, English lessons were held for 12 students from Flores' private junior high school. They completed a questionnaire that included quantitative and qualitative questions. Descriptive statistics are used to examine qualitative data conceptually and statistically. The participants' experiences reflected various aspects of the students' participation. According to the findings, creative writing activities can help students learn about behavior, emotion, and cognition in a poetry class. However, in a poetry class, emotional involvement prevailed and was followed by behavioral engagement. Nonetheless, pupils maintained a low level of cognitive engagement.

ENGAGING STUDENTS IN A FLIPPED CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION: TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSE (ESP) IN HIGHER EDUCATION 让学生参与翻转课堂教学:在高等教育中为特定目的进行英语教学

ESP (English for Specific Purpose) is part of ELT (English Language Teaching) which contains the teaching of English as a foreign language. Every English teacher, especially ESP, must innovate in the delivery of their teaching materials which are always carried out from year to year. This study reports on the perceptions of economics major students about the use of flipped classroom models in learning English for Specific Purpose (ESP). Illustrated in classroom action research through reflective journals, photo elicitation and interviews data. Qualitative findings show that: 1) all students enjoy watching video teaching materials and have an interest in using them to learn English; 2) the use of flipped classroom in learning English makes students independent and active in learning English; 3) flipped classroom engaged students in learning English in different contexts of discourse; 4) flipped classroom mode motivated students in learning English. The findings of this study are expected to be useful for other researchers interested in EFL learning innovations or teachers who are looking for teaching English for Specific Purpose (ESP).

FOSTERING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN EFL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DURING LISTENING COMPREHENSION USING DIGITAL TEACHING-MATERIALS: A CASE STUDY 运用数位教材培养英语大学学生在听力理解中的批判性思维能力:个案研究

Understanding listening materials is perceived as the most challenging aspect of language learning by many EFL University students. They face difficulties in recognizing English words, phrases, pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence complexity, compounded by the rapid speech rate of native speakers. Addressing these challenges, this study explores the use of digital materials that require students to analyse, evaluate and make informed judgments based on listening content, thereby nurturing higher order thinking skills. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving the collection of comprehensive data from course syllabi, lecturers and students. A total of sixty-one university students enrolled intermediate listening course, along with two listening lecturers, were actively engaged to enrich the data. The results shows that the use of digital materials, particularly the e-module, has proven to be effective. Students’ responses indicate that the e-module effectively facilitates critical thinking, improves reflective ability, and encourages motivation. Moreover, the e-module features, including well-defined learning outcomes, authentic materials, scaffolded learning activities, engaging multimedia elements, collaborative features, and opportunities for reflection and self-assessment, collectively contribute to foster critical thinking skills and motivation among students.

PROMOTING READING ENGAGEMENT: THE SCHOOL LITERACY MOVEMENT AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1 SEBATIK 促进阅读参与:初中学校扫盲运动[j]

This study aims to analyze the indicators in the process of implementing the school literacy movement at junior high school 1 Sebatik and the obstacles faced. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data collection techniques used are observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this study describe that there are six indicators in the process of implementing the literacy movement at at junior high school 1 Sebatik, namely reading activities for 15 minutes, journaling literacy results, increasing interesting reading books, making literacy corners, conducting competitions that support the school literacy movement and making interesting libraries in support the school literacy movement. In addition, it was found that there were four obstacles experienced by at junior high school 1 Sebatik in the process of the school literacy movement, including: teachers have difficulty in carrying out literacy more than 15 minutes before class, teachers have difficulty providing digital books in class, teachers have difficulty in carrying out activities to respond to reading books, and teachers have difficulty in carrying out creative writing activities.

CULTURAL-BASED READING MATERIALS FOR VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL: STUDENTS’ NEED ANALYSIS 职高文化阅读材料:学生需求分析

English instruction provided in vocational schools (SMK) possesses distinct characteristics when compared to English instruction in general schools. Considering the vocational schools' objective of preparing students to compete effectively in the workforce, it becomes necessary to adapt the instructional materials to cater to the students' specific needs. This research aims to identify the requirements of students in developing culturally-based English reading materials, as assessed from the perspectives of both students and teachers. A combination of questionnaires and interviews was employed to gather the necessary information. A comprehensive analysis, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative aspects, was conducted on the collected data. The findings of the needs assessment unveiled the following key points: 1) students continue to face difficulties in understanding what they read; 2) there is a demand for descriptive texts; 3) English reading materials should be integrated with content relevant to other subjects; and 4) no English reading materials currently exist that consider the students' local culture, specifically the Prabumulih culture. To fulfill these requirements, it is imperative to create supplementary reading resources that incorporate local culture, align with the students' reading proficiency, and support the subject matter effectively.

NEED ANALYSIS FOR DEVELOPING PARAGRAPH WRITING MATERIALS BASED ON PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING MODEL FOR INDONESIAN EFL LEARNERS 基于问题型学习模式的印尼英语学习者段落写作素材开发需求分析

This study aims to explore models of Paragraph Writing materials based on problem-based learning needed by students and lecturers. A descriptive qualitative method design is employed. It involves thirty- three students and two instructors of the English Department of a private university in Mataram West Lombok, Indonesia who attend paragraph writing class in the academic year 2023-2024. To collect the data, questionnaires, and interviews were used. The finding revealed that students and lecturers preferred teaching materials with understanding part of the paragraph, unity and coherence, and paragraph organization. The topic of paragraph writing material on vocabulary, subject-verb agreement, and part of speech. Learning exercises provide in individual and group, learning exercises which focus on writing topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences. Evaluation from both theoretical and practical elements, to understand the concept of problem-based learning. To conclude, designing a model of teaching materials for paragraph writing materials based on problem-based learning is needed to conduct to keep up with updated insightful needs. By giving information on the needs of students and educators, this study has shown the capacity to bridge the gap and also recommendation to conduct need analysis regularly for designing Paragraph Writing Material. Learning exercises provide in individual and group, learning exercises which focus on writing topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences. Evaluation from both theoretical and practical elements, to understand the concept of problem-based learning. To conclude, designing a model of teaching materials for paragraph writing materials based on problem-based learning is needed to conduct to keep up with updated insightful needs. By giving information on the needs of students and educators, this study has shown the capacity to bridge the gap and also recommendation to conduct need analysis regularly for designing Paragraph Writing Material. UNVEILING THE POETIC LANGUAGE OF STUDENT DISCOURSE ON INSTAGRAM 揭示instagram上学生话语的诗意语言

This study aims to investigate the poetic function of language used by students on Instagram pertaining to the discourse topics expressed by the students. These researchers adopted a qualitative approach as the research design. This study was conducted by collecting data towards students from schools in Denpasar, Bali, about students' Instagram captions as its document data for analysis. Based on observation, documentation, and interviews with all participants, it can be concluded that Roman Jakobson's poetics function of language, which was demonstrated in the students' Instagram captions, is a viable initiative to discover students’ topics of interest; the students tend to choose topics such as life, love (blossom, broken heart, or loneliness), nature (nature itself or related to humans), personality, wordplay, precious moment,self-confidence, and friendship. These captions are the result of the students' ideology, which include the ideology of wisdom, humor, confession, and hope.

EUSTRESS, LEARNING ENGAGEMENT, AND WORKABLE STRATEGIES OF DCBLT IN ENGLISH FOR ENGINEERING 工程英语dblt的强调、学习参与及可行策略

Attention to eustress related to learning engagement among ESP learners utilizing Digital Content-Based Language Teaching (DCBLT) remains notably insufficient. This research aims to identify the levels and relationships between eustress and learning engagement, as well as the identification of workable teaching strategies when implementing DCBLT. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study utilizes quantitative data (questionnaire responses) from 43 students and qualitative data (in-depth interviews) from three English for Engineering language instructors. The analysis procedure for quantitative data employed the Spearman rank correlation test, while qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that the levels of eustress and learning engagement among students are highly satisfactory. Moreover, eustress correlates positively and strongly with increased learning engagement. The data also reveals the existence of several workable DCBLT teaching strategies, encompassing the pre-teaching phase (stimulating idea generation, fostering brainstorming, establishing connections, and motivating learners), the whilst-teaching phase (employing a student-centered learning approach, including individual tasks, group work, and quizzes via the DCB platform), and the post-teaching phase (assessing, verifying, and reviewing learners' comprehension). Research recommendations are also presented in the concluding section to fortify and extend the findings of this study.

Abstract:The development of current e-module for writing procedural text with Google stie was done and applied for seventh graders of Integrated Islamic JHS Harapan Media Palembang This RD applied the development model of Dick, Carey, and Carey to produce a valid, practical, and effective e-module of writing procedure text with Google Site. From the text, the learners and the teachers required creative and innovative e-module for writing procedure text with Google Site to develop learners’ learning independence, interest, and motivation. The research subjects were the 93-seventh graders and 3 Indonesian language teachers of Integrated Islamic JHS Harapan Mulia Palembang taken by saturated sampling. On the other hand, the effectiveness test involved 24 learners from different class within the same grade. The applied sampling technique was saturated sampling technique. The validity test of the e-module with Google site involved three experts. They were material, language, and media experts. The validity with material expert obtained a mean of 4.75, categorized as valid. The validity with language experts obtained a mean of 4.33, categorized as extremely valid. Then, the validity test with the media expert obtained a mean score of 4.92, categorized as very valid. The practicality test of the e-module with Google site was based on the one-to-one, small group, and field tests.The one-to-one test obtained a mean of 4.15, categorized as practical. The small group test obtained a mean of 4.21, categorized as very practical. Then, the field test obtained a mean of 4.14, categorized as practical. The effectiveness test of the e-module for writing procedure text with google sites was based on the pretest-posttest results. The pretest result obtained a mean score of 54.95, categorized unaccomplished while the posttest obtained the results of 81.21, categorized accomplished. From the development of an e-module for writing procedure text with Google site, the result showed that the seventh graders of Integrated Islamic JHS Harapan Mulia Palembang found the developed module valid and practical to learn procedure text writing. The product was also effective to improve the learners' procedure text writing.

PRAGMATIC ASPECTS OF SPEECH ACTS: A CROSS-LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE 言语行为的语用方面:跨语言视角

Effective intercultural communication is a cornerstone of today's globalized world, necessitating an exploration of the pragmatic aspects of speech acts from a cross-linguistic perspective. This research delves into the complex interplay between language, culture, and politeness strategies within the contexts of Bahasa Indonesia and Malay. Using a comprehensive datasets collected through observational field study in diverse naturalistic settings, including workplaces, educational institutions, and everyday social contexts, research examines the performance and interpretation of requests, apologies, compliments, and refusals. The findings reveal a shared preference for indirect and polite language when making requests in both linguistic communities, underlining the universality of politeness strategies. While Bahasa Indonesia speakers tend to employ explicit expressions of regret in apologies, Malay speakers adopt a more subtle approach. Compliments showcase differences, with Bahasa Indonesia speakers favoring direct expressions of admiration and Malay speakers employing nuanced language. Refusals demonstrate stark contrasts, with Malay speakers utilizing indirect strategies and Bahasa Indonesia speakers opting for directness. This study contributes to the growing discourse on cross-linguistic and cross-cultural pragmatics, emphasizing the importance of considering both linguistic diversity and cultural norms in understanding intercultural communication. This research, grounded in real-world interactions, calls for continued exploration of trans-cultural threads in speech act usage and offers valuable insights for enhancing intercultural competence. While acknowledging the study's limitations, researcher invites future research endeavors to delve deeper into the intricate world of speech acts and intercultural communication.
