Many researchers have investigated the vibration characteristics of mid-story isolated buildings. However, a formula to estimate their maximum responses has still room for improvement. A complex complete quadratic combination method is reformed using mode-dependent peak factors. The response of a mid-story isolated building model under white noise ground motion is analyzed and it is confirmed that the reformed formula gives slightly larger, safer-side estimates in most cases.

A number of researches on fire plume properties have been extensively carried out in the field of fire safety engineering, and useful results were obtained for an architectural design of onshore buildings and plants. In the offshore environment, however, such properties are probably different from those in a compartment of onshore facilities because the fire source location changes with time due to the influence of complex ship motion. Thus, in this study large eddy simulation of a turbulent buoyant plume originating at an oscillating fire source was carried out to clarify the fire plume property in the offshore environment. As a preliminary study, unsteady fire source movement associated with ship rolling motion was simplified to a simple harmonic motion in a horizontal direction. The numerical results were compared with well-known properties of a fire plume originating at a fixed, simple-shaped source.
