PurposeAn emerging technology in the primary stages of its life cycle is the blockchain. This research paper aims to evaluate the preparedness of hospitals in using blockchain technology in their electronic health record (EHR) systems.Design/methodology/approachIn the initial stage, 15 criteria relating to preparedness in using blockchain in EHR systems were identified from the literature and divided into five criteria, namely, technological, legal, financial, environmental and organizational. Then, 17 experts from various specialized fields were invited to form expert panels. After validating the criteria identified by the expert panels, the weights of the criteria were determined through the fuzzy best-worst multicriteria decision-making method. Following that, the preparedness of ten selected hospitals in Tehran to use blockchain in their EHR systems was assessed via the weighted aggregated sum product assessment method. Finally, using sensitivity analysis and examining different scenarios, the robustness of the results of the proposed approach was validated.FindingsAccording to expert judgments, the legal criterion (32%) was deemed the most important factor in the preparedness to use blockchain in EHR systems followed by technological (28%), financial (17%), organizational (13%) and environmental (9%) criteria. A sensitivity analysis showed that the proposed approach offers good strength and robustness in evaluating the selected hospitals.Originality/valueThis study can be useful in developing knowledge in the field of technology management for evaluating blockchain implementation in the health-care industry using a novel, coherent and robust approach. In addition, the proposed approach provides comprehensive insight for decision-makers on assessing preparedness in deploying blockchain technology in EHR systems.

PurposeThis study aims to evaluate the usability and information architecture of the digital library (DL) website of the National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI).Design/methodology/approachThis applied study used an exploratory mixed method, card sorting. Data were collected by interviewing, observation, usability test and card sorting. By interviewing users about problems of the DL, eight tasks were predefined and users’ problems in the path were identified. Their satisfaction of the tasks and the usability rates were measured via a questionnaire. Card sorting was done to inform on the information organization of the website elements. The study population included all users of the DL of the NLAI in two groups: ten initiator users (public users) and ten expert users (librarians). SPSS was used for analysing the usability test quantitative data. MaxQda was applied for analysing interview-driven qualitative data. Qualitative content analysis, categorization (data organization and grouping) and determining main and secondary codes were applied as well. The sort optimal application was used for analysing card sorting data in the form of similarity matrix and dendrogram. For validating qualitative findings, triangulation was used. The internal reliability of the used questionnaire amounted to a = 0.87FindingsRegarding the assigned tasks, new initiator users by consuming 367.67 s for registering and new expert users by consuming 403 s spent the most time. Task 2 ranked first in being incomplete among 40% of initiator users and Task 3 ranked first by 30% of incompleteness. Expert users had more unsuccessful attempts. Task 5 with the mean rate of 3.35 and Task 8 with the mean rate of 2.25 were the most difficult and the easiest tasks, respectively. Some usability components were rated lower than the moderate point. Only 30% of initiator users and 10% of expert users were satisfied with the website. A total of 12 categories and 452 codes were identified as main problems of the DL. The problems related to a vague perception of concepts and labels with 90 repetitions and digital source display with six repetitions ranked as the first and the last problems in working with the DL, respectively. The sort optimal package produced the card sorting results as a matrix similarity and a dendrogram. Card sorting reflected some changes in organizing information items. Interviews after card sorting emerged some new groups to be included, such as links to other digital libraries, shared databases in the organization and frequently asked questions.Originality/valueThe library’s website should be designed in a manner so that it can satisfy users with different traits. As the information technologies are increasingly developing, the importance of such a design increases for better service provision and effective competition.

PurposeIn recent years, personalized recommendations have facilitated easy access to users' personal information and historical interactions, thereby improving recommendation effectiveness. However, due to privacy risk concerns, it is essential to balance the accuracy of personalized recommendations with privacy protection. Accordingly, this paper aims to propose a neural graph collaborative filtering personalized recommendation framework based on federated transfer learning (FTL-NGCF), which achieves high-quality personalized recommendations with privacy protection.Design/methodology/approachFTL-NGCF uses a third-party server to coordinate local users to train the graph neural networks (GNN) model. Each user client integrates user–item interactions into the embedding and uploads the model parameters to a server. To prevent attacks during communication and thus promote privacy preservation, the authors introduce homomorphic encryption to ensure secure model aggregation between clients and the server.FindingsExperiments on three real data sets (Gowalla, Yelp2018, Amazon-Book) show that FTL-NGCF improves the recommendation performance in terms of recall and NDCG, based on the increased consideration of privacy protection relative to original federated learning methods.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous research has considered federated transfer learning framework for GNN-based recommendation. It can be extended to other recommended applications while maintaining privacy protection.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of mobile self-efficacy on personal digital archiving (PDA) practices of undergraduate students. Design/methodology/approach This study used a quantitative research design for achieving the objectives. The population consisted of undergraduate students from public sector universities (the top five) of Punjab, Pakistan, listed in the Higher Education Commission recognized general universities. The data were analysed by using SmartPLS, mobile self-efficacy was the independent variable that consisted of two constructs (basic mobile phone operations and using the internet and emails). PDA practices was the dependent variable (information backup, clearing and deleting). Findings The analysis consisted of two major parts: first the assessment of measurement model and second the structural equation modelling analysis. A significant impact of mobile self-efficacy (basic mobile phone operations, using internet and email) was found on all the sub-constructs (information backup, information clearing and information deleting) of PDA practices. However, using internet and email has no significant impact on the information clearing practices of undergraduate students of Pakistani universities. Originality/value This study is a valuable addition to the extant literature because no comprehensive research has been carried out on the impact of mobile self-efficacy and PDA through mobile phones. It also contributes theoretically in the form of the development of a validated instrument on mobile-based PDA. Additionally, it possesses practical value for information literacy instruction programs.

PurposeThis paper aims to measure the perceptions of librarians about information literacy (IL) instruction, their current IL practices and the problems they face while offering IL instructional programs in public and private sector university libraries in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative research design was adopted, and a survey was carried out for this study to collect the data through an online questionnaire for the university librarians. All librarians (a total of 120) were approached to collect the data, of whom 92 (76.6%) responded to the survey.FindingsThe findings reveal that the librarians working in the university libraries of Islamabad are aware of the significance of IL instruction to fulfil the information needs of their library users. A majority of the librarians indicated having adequate skills to offer IL instruction. Moreover, the majority of the librarians are offering IL instruction to users at their respective universities. However, some of the barriers affecting IL instruction programs were also reported including the absence of IL instruction courses in the library and information science (LIS) curriculum, a shortage of trained library professional staff to provide IL instruction, a lack of commitment among librarians for IL instruction, a lack of training opportunities for librarians and a lack of interest from library users. These obstacles have a negative effect on IL instruction in the university libraries of Islamabad. Therefore, this study suggests that librarians are needed to take several necessary steps to overcome these obstacles to achieve the best results in IL instruction programs.Originality/valueThis study presents a picture of the status of IL skills, current practices and barriers to offering IL instruction in the university libraries of Islamabad. This research bridges the gap in the existing literature and will help to create awareness about the importance of IL skills among LIS professionals in Pakistan. Moreover, the findings of this study will help encourage librarians for the enhancement of IL instruction services in university libraries of Islamabad in particular and Pakistan in general.

PurposeReorganising unstructured academic abstracts according to a certain logical structure can help scholars not only extract valid information quickly but also facilitate the faceted search of academic literature. This study aims to build a high-performance model for identifying of the functional structures of unstructured abstracts in the social sciences.Design/methodology/approachThis study first investigated the structuring of abstracts in academic articles in the field of social sciences, using large-scale statistical analyses. Then, the functional structures of sentences in the abstract in a corpus of more than 3.5 million abstracts were identified from sentence classification and sequence tagging by using several models based on either machine learning or a deep learning approach, and the results were compared.FindingsThe results demonstrate that the functional structures of sentences in abstracts in social science manuscripts include the background, purpose, methods, results and conclusions. The experimental results show that the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers exhibited the best performance, the overall F1 score of which was 86.23%.Originality/valueThe data set of annotated social science abstract is generated and corresponding models are trained on the basis of the data set, both of which are available on Github (https://github.com/Academic-Abstract-Knowledge-Mining/SSCI_Abstract_Structures_Identification). Based on the optimised model, a Web application for the identification of the functional structures of abstracts and their faceted search in social sciences was constructed to enable rapid and convenient reading, organisation and fine-grained retrieval of academic abstracts.
