The red lionfish is an invasive species in the Atlantic, occurring from the USA to Brazil. Strategies to control this invasion include promoting the consumption of lionfish on a local commercial scale. Aiming to encourage the exploitation for consumption, and thus, contributing to the control of the invasion, we determined the fillet yield of the red lionfish. The average yield of red lionfish fillets was 36.3% and 30.0% of total wet body weight, respectively, for fillet with skin and fillet without skin, a value similar to that of other species of reef fish.

Understanding how aquatic organisms behave in their natural habitat is an essential activity and one of the techniques that contribute to this understanding is morphometry, which studies the relationship between shape and body growth of fish. With this, this work aims to analyze the morphometric characteristics for two species of fish being, Bryconops giacopinii and Geophagus proximus, in order to support future studies on the dynamics of growth of these species in the Praquiquara river microbasin. The collection of biological material took place between July 2017 and June 2018, from the access to Fazenda Escola de Castanhal - UFRA, using a 2 m throw net with a 1.5cm mesh and gill nets of 15, 25 and 30m in length and 1.6 m high, the caugth fish were identified, measured and weighed in terms of morphometric characters, then the data were processed from a linear regression and the weight-length data were logarithmized to adjust the regression. The data were analyzed using the R software. The results showed that the variables presented correlation that were within the scale of moderate to strong positive (r > 0.50) for both species and that the allometry (b = 3) for the relationships were negative, with the exception of the weight-length relationship of the G. proximus species that presented an isometric growth. Therefore, the microbasin can comprise the feeding area for the studied species, as well as the area of refuge and protection.

Nematode larvae can cause damage to fish and diseases to consumers. In this paper we record the first occurrence of Hysterothylacium sp. in Hoplias malabaricus captured by artisanal fishers in the Poti River, State of Piauí, northeast Brazil. In the laboratory the fish were investigated for the collection of helminths. Sixteen hosts (63.3%) were parasitized by 94 nematodes larvae that were morphologically identified as Hysterothylacium sp. parasitizing the liver, intestine, stomach, pyloric cecum, abdominal cavity and swim bladder. The parasitic diversity in H. malabaricus is composed of thirty-two taxa, with the larvae of Contracaecum being dominant. This work records the parasitological inventory of nematodes in H. malabaricus and we add morphological and morphometric data for Hysterothylacium sp. in the state of Piauí, parasitizing fish of commercial importance.

EFEITO DO ÓLEO DE Moringa oleífera SOBRE O PATÓGENO PISCÍCOLA Saprolegnia parasítica
Pub Date : 1900-01-01 DOI: 10.46732/actafish.2023.11.1.50-55
Moringa oleifera is a plant with great potential for this purpose, due to its antimicrobial properties. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the action of M. oleifera seed oil on the fungus Saprolegnia parasitica, which causes the most important fungal disease in freshwater fish. For this purpose, the seeds were collected from the pods in a ripe state and submitted to a cold extraction process via mechanical press. A strain of the S. parasitica was used as test culture by the bioanalytical method "in vitro" on BDA (Potato, Dextrose and Agar) medium. The oil was emulsified by the low energy method, with surfactant and water, and poured onto the plates with medium at the concentrations of the treatments. The experiment was conducted in a randomized design with 5 treatments (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mL/L), all with 5 repetitions, maintained at a temperature of 24°C. The plates were observed every 24 hours for 96 hours for mycelial growth measurement. By 48 hours, a reduction in growth was observed at 0.25mL/L, intensifying at levels of 0.5; 0.75, and 1.0mL/L. In 72 hours, the control treatments and the 0.25mL/Ltreatment did not differ, but were different from the other treatments. However, after 96 hours all reached full extension. Therefore, M. oleifera seed oil shows fungistatic activity on the fungus S. parasitica at concentrations higher than 0.25mL/L.

In this study, the health and well-being of fish species Salminus hilarii, in a stretch of a headwater river in the Araguaia River basin - Tocantins, Goiás State, were evaluated. Where the objective was to identify and measure the hematological parameters (erythrogram, thrombogram and leukogram of the referred species). The specimens (n = 50) were captured using fishing nets and cast nets. Blood samples were collected by caudal puncture. The hematological data were obtained according to the methodology described in the classic bibliography. Based on the results of the hematological analysis, the relationship between them and their collection area was obtained, as well as the analyzes by microscopy in the search for morphological (genotoxic) alterations, in the micronuclei. Changes or variations in these parameters can be used as indicators of environmental contamination since these animals are inserted in the environment. Thus, the immune responses presented by the analyzed specimens where the difference between the results of these parameters, as well as the presence of genotoxic markers, are indicative of changes in the studied river water quality.

Aim: To verify variations of early fish stages through density, species composition and ecological attributes in the lower Paranapanema River. Methods: The Canoas I and Canoas II reservoirs were sampled during three reproductive periods (RP´s) between 2012 and 2015. Eggs and larvae were collected using conical-cylindrical plankton nets and juveniles by seines and sieves. After euthanasia and fixation, the samples were identified at the lowest taxonomic level and grouped according to their reproductive strategy and life history. Variations in the eggs, larvae, and juvenile’s densities were tested by Kruskal-Wallis with post-hoc Dunn's test from RP´s, while Student T-test detected differences between reservoirs. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination (NMDS) with post-hoc analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) were employed to elucidate differences in species composition. Major results: We sampled 5,513 eggs, 3,137 larvae, and 187 juveniles in Canoas I Reservoir, and 2,709 eggs, 237 larvae, and 13 juveniles in Canoas II Reservoir. Fishes were identified in seven orders, 15 families, and 31 species, with Pimelodus maculatus, Anostomidae, and small-sized characids being the most abundant. There was a predominance of non-migratory reproductive strategy (46%) and periodic life history (60%), most of them opportunistic species. Differences in densities were observed between RP´s and reservoirs. A clustering of three groups were performed to larvae and juveniles, where the divergences were statistically confirmed (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated the decrease of early fish stages density overtime and the dominance of opportunistic species, suggesting that these species complete their life cycle in the reservoirs. Thus, P. maculatus can be an important species for the health of ecosystems, in addition to serving as a fishing resource in reservoirs. However, the absence of critical sites for reproduction and the climatic events, along with human responses to this, may have impaired the conclusion of life cycle from many species.

The commercialization of fish in free fairs is a very important activity, as the traders of this product guarantee their family maintenance from this practice. However, with the recent outbreak of Haff disease in the Amazon region, there has been a clear decline in trade in fish products. Thus, the objective of this work was to identify the effects of Haff disease caused to fish traders in free markets in the metropolitan region of Belém do Pará. The study region comprises the municipality of Belém, in the state of Pará, where technical visits were made to five of the main free fairs in the region in the period of October and November 2021. Semistructured questionnaires were applied and the responses were drawn up and processed using descriptive statistics and relative frequency analysis for plotting the graphs. 82 fish traders were interviewed at street markets where most were men over 50 years old and low level of education, it was identified that few had knowledge about Haff disease and that the disease had an impact on the economic aspect of traders of fish. Therefore, the Haff disease interfered with the economic behavior of the stallholders, showing that the fish trade is of paramount importance for the livelihood of this class.

THE AMAZONIAN Arapaima CHANGES ITS STATUS FROM THREATENED SPECIES TO AN INVADER OF EARTH’S FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS

A survey of the records was conducted regarding the locations on the planet in which Arapaima has been introduced from its natural habitats in areas of South America, whether for aquaculture or the aquarium trade. Originally, the global expansion of this species was intended to maintain its existence in the face of a perceived risk of extinction. However, the results of the intended and accidental spread of its distribution reveal that Arapaima is an invasive species that can endanger native fish species diversity. It is an air breather, which allows it to inhabit low oxygen conditions of warm tropical water, and a species that grows fast, attaining a large size when mature. It also presents parental care and is a generalist predator that feeds on many other species. Furthermore, it can escape from managed fish farms into natural waterways and establish viable populations without control. From the literature, 228 sites with records of Arapaima from around the world were identified, 95 of which are native sites for the species and 133 are sites where they were introduced. These sites are distributed in 28 countries in the Americas (North, Central and South), Europe, and Asia. Published results of introductions reveal that Arapaima has had negative impacts on native fish species, thus warranting closer attention in regards to how, when and where this species should be allowed.

The Araguaia River is an important Brazilian watercourse that covers several states of the country and has a large extension. It is characterized by a vast aquatic biodiversity, with a variety of habitats that are home to diverse terrestrial and aquatic species. However, the environment faces environmental challenges such as shore degradation, mining, dam construction and overfishing. This study aimed to identify the freshwater bivalves of the Araguaia River, based on specimens deposited in the zoological collection of the Biology Laboratory of the SESI School of Araguaína, State of Tocantins. And so, the results obtained revealed the presence of 13 species of freshwater bivalves, distributed in three families. Such results were possible from the collection of 1071 valves, corresponding to approximately 530 animals. Among the species found, Eupera simoni, Anodontites trapesialis, Lamproscapha ensiformis and Leila esula stand out. However, some valves could not be identified to the specific level due to conservation conditions or lack of pertinent literature.
