Traditional ethics in this paper refers to the norms, precepts, principles and moral codes, which regulate the conduct and actions of individuals in African societies. The paper provides a clear understanding of African Ethics and morality. It shows how traditional ethical principles helped to maintain and ensure social order and stability in traditional African societies. It x-rays the effects of Western civilization and culture on the smooth functioning of traditional ethics. It recommends the utilization of traditional ethical principles in the development of the abundant human and material resources in modern Africa, especially in this age of globalization. The paper finally, advocates a harmonization of the positive elements of traditional ethics with Western culture for a better moral society in contemporary Africa. SOPHIA: An African Journal of Philosophy Vol. 9 (1) 2006: pp. 143-147

Although pots of ink and tons of prints have been expended on the gender question, nevertheless, most commentators on gender issues have not really addressed them in such logical and conceptual manner as to put the women problems in proper perspective. This is what this paper is aimed at correcting. The paper does not seek to argue for the equality of men and women or the replacement of male domination with a stronger female domination, but for the empowerment of women through the removal of the constitutional, cultural and social shackles that have tended to hinder their development and self-actualization over the ages. SOPHIA: An African Journal of Philosophy Vol. 9 (1) 2006: pp. 154-161

Cultism is one of the social vices that have continued to defy solutions in Nigeria's tertiary educational institutions. Many students have been maimed, mutilated and even killed as a result of campus cult activities. This paper examines the origin, types and the initiation procedures of campus cults. The reasons for cult membership, the reasons for its continuous existence in Nigerian campuses and the consequences of cult activities have also been ex-rayed. Measures aimed at curbing campus cult activities are also brought to limelight. SOPHIA: An African Journal of Philosophy Vol. 9 (1) 2006: pp. 130-133

Traditional institutions and shrines play very important roles in the life of the communities within which they are situated in the African setting. These traditional institutions and shrines have existed from earliest times and in some cases are as old as the communities where they exist. Prior to the advent of Christianity, Islam and other external modernization influences, the traditional institutions and shrines had very far-reaching and important influences. However, in spite of the impact of these external forces, traditional institutions and shrines have maintained a central focus in the cosmic life of the typical African man and the community at large. This is because, though the African may not believe in the efficacy of the traditional institutions and shrines he is still conscious of their existence and influences. Thus in most cases, the individual conducts his/her affairs in such a way that he/she tries to avoid contact or conflict with the shrine and traditional institutions or their ceremonies. One of such traditional institutions and shrines is the Ekpe Fraternity shrine among the Efik of the lower Cross River Basin. The fraternity shrine had played a very major and significant role in the past and still plays some roles in the present. Although its influence had declined due to the introduction of modern institutions of government and the impact Christianity, it still plays a role in the lives of the inhabitants of the community. In this paper, we shall be considering the ethical-social and judicial significance of the Ekpe fraternity shrine and the changing roles of the fraternity over the years in the Efik community. SOPHIA: An African Journal of Philosophy Vol. 9 (1) 2006: pp. 45-48
