—This article describes base station placement as a multi-objective problem (MOP). Base station placement and con-figuration envolves a large number of unknowns and constraints and heuristic algorithms seem to be a suitable alternative to solve MOPs. A new class of evolutionary algorithms, the so-called multi-objective optimisation algorithms based on artificial immune systems (MO-AIS) are the core of an innovative approach to base station placement, which is presented in this paper. Preliminary results followed by a thorough analysis are provided. Three network simulation environments are used in the tests.

— H.264/AVC is a hybrid predictive-transform coder. In this paper we propose a more computational efficient approach to implement the prediction module, its most complex stage. The idea is to employ a subset of dominant prediction modes instead of testing all modes recommended by H.264/AVC standard. Results show that, for high definition sequences, the quality loss is negligible allowing us to control the compression complexity of high definition digital TV video sequences.

—The automatic interpretation of reflectometry traces to identify twisted-pair loops can be considered a pattern recognition problem. Thus, any loop make-up algorithm must firstly extract features from the reflectogram before starting a classification process. This paper focuses on feature extraction through the echo identification on time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements, which are analyzed by a multi-scale edge detection wavelet approach that identifies all singularities in a reflectogram and relate them to theirs respective echoes. From echoes, it is provided an approximation for an auto-regressive TDR trace model, furnishing features for classification.

— The performance of WDM networks are usually analized through the blocking probability of a given request. It is argued that alternative routes can have a significant impact on the blocking probability of a WDM network. In this work, we analize the impact of alternative routes in mesh and ring topologies. Results show that, contrary to our expectation, having alternative routes can have a negative impact in certain cases .

— This work proposes a blind strategy for adapting the parameters of a decision-feedback equalizer (DFE). The approach, which is based on the constant modulus (CM) criterion and on an artificial immune system, was tested under scenarios characterized by channels representative of a number of aspects relevant from a practical standpoint. In all cases, it was possible to find the global optimum of the CM criterion with a number of iterations considered by us to be quite reasonable in view of, inter alia , the complexity of the employed search tool.

This paper presents an extension of the arithmetic Fourier transform which allows to perform the spectral analysis of a discrete-time signal in arbitrary frequencies. The pro- posed procedure, which is related to the nonuniform discrete Fourier transform, has attractive characteristics in terms of computational complexity. Results of simulations and application scenarios are discussed.

This paper presents the results from an ultra wideband (UWB) indoor measurement campaign and describes a 3D beam trace pyramidal method that allows one to characterize the channel over a bandwidth of 850 MHz. The UWB channel characteristics are assessed in terms of mean delay, delay spread and coherence bandwidth.

This article is concerned with the dimensioning of IP networks when submitted to TCP traffic. The problem taken into account is the Discrete Capacity Assignment where capacity values for each network link are chosen based on a set of discrete values. Three techniques are proposed to deal with it: Exaustive Search (ES), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and a restriction based heuristic. Keywords— Dimensioning of IP networks, Discrete Capacity Assignment, Exaustive Search, Particle Swarm Optimization.
