The current study is an effort to understand the Yanomami sociopolitical dynamic in the context of mobilization and articulation that preceded the establishment of Hutukara Yanomami Association; in that context, new patterns of dialogs and knowledge were established, fact that has delineated new forms of relationship between youth and elder leaders. From reads in ethnology, history and I my own ethnography work, I try to understand the place of the new organization in the sociopolitical dynamic of Yanomami and its implication for the local groups and also in the relationship between traditional and youth leaders. I try to show that speech and knowledge are the two major principles that connect the youth and traditional leaders; the choice of youth leaders as major political speaker does not mean the elder’s loss of power; the Yanomami see the presence of the youth in the meetings as necessary, due to the necessity of decoding their relationship with non-Indians.

This work is the result of thematic discussions on topics covered during the First International Seminar on Society and Frontiers, sponsored by PPGSOF/UFRR, on December 2012 in Boa Vista. Here we try to establish some relationships between the categories society, environment and frontier in the Amazon, especially from the perspective of political and administrative developments, from colonial times to recent times. The Amazon frontier is characterized here as nothing more than a historical supplier of natural resources as well as more than a space delimited by the National State. Its traditional inhabitants are seen as builders of their own space, and are also incorporated into projects of the National State in order to meet existing demands elsewhere, either at the beginning of the conquest or at present. In short, it is how the economics and politics overcome peoples and environment and shaped life in the area known today as the Brazilian Amazon.

This article talks about the role of Saint Joaquim’s Fort in the consolidation of the border and of the occupation of the Rio Branco valley, located in the current State of Roraima. It strives to comprehend the process of occupation of the region in the end of the XVIII and XIX centuries, describe the colonial policies of the Portuguese and the Brazilian Empire alike, to discuss questions related to the memory of Saint Joaquim’s Fort, trying to emphasize the subjects who participated in this process. Moreover, there is a discussion about the dispute over Saint Joaquim’s Fort, a question that involves several segments of Roraima’s society, a memory that was appropriated by the so called “pioneer” families because some of them had their origins bound to ex-participants of the fortification and utilized them to justify their possessions and to consolidate their social place.

In this text, I re-elaborate the narratives and oral speech of some of the social subjects (Guyanese Negroes, Macushi Indigenous and Wapishana, regional Brazilians) about the Rupununi Uprising. The narratives and oral speech of the interviewees on the subject are partially constituted by the fieldwork that originated the Ethnography built as a doctorate thesis in the frontier Brazil-Guyana. The intention is to contextualize, by means of these narratives, the realms of memory that make up the political landscape of the 60s in these two countries, since the political event called Rupununi Uprising, characterized as one of the most polemic period in Guyana’s history. In Brazil, milestones of this decade were the military dictatorship and the leftist movements. In Guyana it is a moment of the process of independence and of secession fights.

The present article has as main objective to argue the process of demographic growth in the “peripheral capitals” of the Amazonia and its relation with some social indicators. Through the presentation of some indicators on these cities, we intend to demonstrate their socio-economic situation and the necessity of governmental intervention in the combat to the problems reflected in the indicators. Using basically the data presented for Pochmann and Amorim (2004), we search to namely present the social situation of the cities that for the moment we call peripheral capitals of the Amazon: Boa Vista, Macapá, Rio Branco and Porto Velho.
