Context-aware and personalized event filtering for low-overhead continuous remote health monitoring 上下文感知和个性化事件过滤,用于低开销的连续远程运行状况监视

A particularly compelling vision of long-term remote health monitoring advocates the use of a personal pervasive device (such as a cellphone) as an intermediate relay, which transports data streams from multiple body-worn sensors to a backend analytics infrastructure. Unfortunately, a pure relay-based functionality on the cellphone is inadequate in the longer term, as increasingly sophisticated medical sensors impose unnacceptably high uplink traffic and energy consumption costs on the mobile device. To address this challenge, we are building an event-processing middleware, called HARMONI, which enables the pervasive device to perform context-aware processing and event filtering on the sensor data streams and locally extract higher-level features of interest, thereby reducing the volume of transmitted data. This paper presents the design and architectural components of HARMONI, with special emphasis on its implementation of context-aware event processing. This paper then demonstrates that the mobile device can extract localized context from the incoming sensor stream with sufficient accuracy to achieve satisfactory context-aware filtering. Our results also establish the need for personalizing such context extraction, as they show that similar sensor data patterns obtained from different individuals can imply significantly different activity contexts.

Professional and end-user-driven service creation in the SPICE platform 在SPICE平台上创建专业和最终用户驱动的服务

Services are becoming the foundation of the Telecommunication and Internet world. The ability to fast and cost-efficient create, provision and manage services will become a driving force in the overall competition. A major step forward for a rich service environment is to give end-users the ability to create their own services. The SPICE platform provides an environment for future converged services. Using the SPICE tool chain for service creation professional developers can build services combining Internet and Telecommunication service enablers. End-user driven service creation explore the creativity and needs of the real users. We explain how professional services can be created in such a way that they stimulate the uptake of end-user services. Finally, we explain the design aspect of privacy preserving service enablers which will allow network operator to take a central role in the overall service economy while preserving essential requirements like privacy.

Opportunistic medical monitoring using bluetooth P2P networks 利用蓝牙P2P网络进行医疗监控

Remote medical monitoring with medical sensors and wireless communications has recently gained attention for the potential savings and improved quality in patient health-care. Currently, many mobile wireless medical infrastructures connect to the Internet in a point-to-point fashion, such as the cellular network. However, our research investigates new models for remote patient care that exploit P2P networking among patients and healthcare providers (nurses, doctors, emergency personnel). In this paper, we identify several medical applications based on P2P health networking focusing on two specific scenarios where nurses and patients are both equipped with Bluetooth devices. Nurses opportunistically collect, share and upload data in a P2P fashion. During an emergency, the nearest nurse is alerted via Bluetooth enhanced inquiry response mechanism. The simulation and test-bed experimentation demonstrate that Bluetooth P2P networking is both feasible and cost-effective in remote medical monitoring.

Cooperative media streaming using adaptive network compression 使用自适应网络压缩的协同媒体流

Media content distribution constitutes a growing share of the services on the Internet. Two distinct distribution approaches used today are layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC). Current wireless connection technologies, e.g. Wimax, have properties which make them unsuitable for media distribution using traditional approaches. In particular, the asymmetric relationship between the uplink and the downlink bandwidth makes the cooperative distribution difficult. A promising concept, termed MDC with Conditional Compression (MDC-CC), has been proposed [11], which essentially acts as an adaptive hybrid between LC and MDC. In order to facilitate the use of MDC-CC, a new overlay network approach is proposed, using tree of meshes. A control system for managing description distribution and compression in a small mesh is implemented in the discrete event simulator NS-2. The two traditional approaches, MDC and LC, are used as references for the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme. The system is simulated in a heterogeneous network environment, where packet errors are introduced. Moreover, a test is performed at different network loads. Performance gain is shown over both LC and MDC.

WiMap: Fast handover for 802.11 mobile devices WiMap: 802.11移动设备的快速切换

Low latency handover is desired to support real time applications, such as VoIP. We introduce WiMap, a new handover scheme that uses past information of handovers. Through our analysis and simulation, we show that WiMap performs 50% faster than traditional handover solutions. WiMap does not require modifications to the access points or WLAN infrastructure and thus can be efficiently implemented.

Enhancing reliability of sensor networks by fine tuning their event observation behavior 通过微调传感器网络的事件观测行为,提高传感器网络的可靠性

Sensor Networks are envisioned to be used in large variety of applications - health care, homeland security etc. - which require high reliability. Due to the fact that the sensors need to be low cost they have only scarce resources leading to a certain level of failures of sensor nodes or sensing devices attached to the nodes. For the applications mentioned reliable and fault tolerant sensor networks are in great demand. Available fault tolerant solutions are mainly customized approaches that revealed several shortcomings. We present an event specification language that allows configuring the level of reliability of a certain sensor network. It explicitly regards heterogeneous sensing capabilities and allows defining complex events as well as tailor made voting schemes. Features for multi-event detection facets and for fine-grained event-related fault tolerance are also part of the language. Our approach significantly enhances service and maintenance features and enables online configuration of sensor networks.

System optimization for peer-to-peer multi hop video broadcasting in wireless ad hoc networks 无线自组织网络中点对点多跳视频广播的系统优化

We consider peer-to-peer video broadcasting using cooperation among peers in an ad hoc wireless network. As opposed to the traditional single hop broadcasting, multiple hops cause an increase in broadcast video quality while creating interference and increasing transmission delay. We develop heuristics for the NP-complete problem of finding the subset of cooperating peers and the number of hops to maximize the data rate and to minimize the maximum observed delay in the system. Simulations show that using the proposed heuristics, different video sequences can be viewed at high qualities with acceptable delay among all peers.

This paper presents a reconfigurable framework used to analyze the performance of different technologies in WLAN environments. This framework incorporates state-of-art experimentation tools into a single control paradigm that allows an easy reconfiguration and repetition of experimentation trials. The paper describes the main features of the testbed together with some of the technical solutions adopted. Specifically this experimentation case studies the performance of VoIP applications across different wireless scenarios. It reveals some patterns of the behaviour of this type of applications that would be difficult to observe in other more specific experimentation platforms.

To improve the already tarnished reputation of WLAN security, the new IEEE 802.11i security standard provides means for an enhanced user authentication and strong data confidentiality. However, the standard focuses on securing higher-layer data, i.e., protecting IEEE 802.11 data frames. Management frames used for connection administration are left unprotected and a wide spectrum of known attacks is still applicable and even extended against the IEEE 802.11i/IEEE 802.1Xprotocol execution. This work describes DiscoSec, a service pack for "patching" WLANs against the most prominent vulnerabilities resulting in resource-depletion and impersonation attacks. DiscoSec provides DoS-resilient key exchange, an efficient frame authentication, and a performance-oriented implementation. By means of extensive real-world measurements the performance of DiscoSec is evaluated showing that even on very resource-limited devices the throughput is decreased by only 22 % compared to the throughput without any authentication, and by 6% on more powerful hardware. To demonstrate its effectiveness, DiscoSec is available as an open-source WLAN device driver.

Demonstration of unobservable voice over IP IP上不可观察语音的演示

We describe UV: a two-node system for unobservable voice communication on the Internet. UV provides unobservability of communication by hiding the fact that there is a conversation taking place. To achieve this, the system uses techniques such as encryption, constant traffic generation, equal packet sizes, and a fixed packet sending schedule. We evaluate the influence of the constant traffic generation on the general performance of UV with experiments on the Internet and in a wireless setting simulated with network simulator NS2. We conclude that although the requirements for privacy protection and usability are often mutually exclusive, they can still be combined in a way that they offer both reasonable performance and good privacy protection.
