This paper presents the results of experimental studies of formation of quasi-regular optical structures in photorefractive Fabry-Perot interferometers based on Y-and Z-cut lithium niobate samples. It is shown that the topology of these structures depends on the parameters of the interferometer, and the characteristics of the inducing light fields.

High demands of modern photonic technologies stimulate researches to create advanced optical and nonlinear optical materials. In this paper we review our recent results on nonlinear optical properties of novel materials based on ionic liquid crystals and anisotropic glasses of metal alkanoate. Such materials exhibit fast (ns-ps) and high enough ( 10−7−10−9 esu) third-order nonlinear optical response, and are promising candidates for photonic applications.

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of THz generation in gases using two-color ionizing laser pulses. Results obtained from (3+1)-dimensional simulations are in good agreement with experimental findings and clarify the mechanisms responsible for THz emission as well as the observed dependencies on the gas pressure.

Propagation of the few-cycle pulses in nonlinear medium are considered. The Reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations with taking into account permanent dipole momentum and wave polarization, and the Schafer-Wayne equation represent new examples of the intergable equations. Some classical integrable equations can be adapted for description of an extremely short pulse evolution too.

We report on a bistable light transmission through two-layered structure which consists of two gratings of planar perfectly conducting infinite strips placed on the both sides of a dielectric slab. It is demonstrated that a switching may be achieved nearly the frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shape trapped-mode resonance excitation.

We suggest using coupled tapered waveguides for compensating losses of surface plasmon polaritons to enhance the performance of plasmonic couplers operating at the nanoscale. We demonstrate that, by an appropriate choice of the taper angle, we can effectively suppress the mode attenuation achieving the effective power transfer in both linear and nonlinear couplers.

We show the stability features of different families of soliplasmon excitations by analyzing their different propagation patterns under random perturbations of the initial profile. The role of phase and dispersive waves is also unveiled.

The relation “composition - structure - NLO property” is observed for a set of >200 acentric borate crystals. The distribution of the crystals over point groups is very inhomogeneous with domination of C2v point group crystals. Acentric borates are distributed on the plane of the shortest chemical bond lengths metal-oxygen over an area, covered by a rosette of three partly crossing ellipses. The dependence of nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(2) on the shortest boron-oxygen bond length L(B-O) in borates has two maximums at L(B-O) = 136 and 148 pm.

The coupling between Kerr filamentation and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is investigated for nanosecond laser pulses propagating in bulk silica. Phase modulated pulses with moderate spectral bandwidth may not prevent backscattering. We demonstrate the existence of a critical bandwidth above which SBS is efficiently suppressed at any pump power.

Processes of generation, propagation and interaction of polaritons in nonlinear medium are considered. The nonlinear polarization of lattice and nonlinear internal polarization of ions under the influence of high-frequency electromagnetic field are taken into account. It is shown that the polariton spectrum depends on the intensities of electromagnetic field.
