introduction: The wet form of age-related macular degeneration (WAMD) is related to the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VEGF gene are associated with different expression patterns of this cytokine (functional polymorphisms). In this study, we considered 4 SNPs that are located in the promoter region (rs699947 A/C, rs833061 C/T, rs1005230 C/T and rs1570360 A/G) and two in the 5’ untranslated region (rs2010963 C/G and rs25648 C/T) that have an effect on transcriptional regulation. Objective : To associate functional SNPs with WAMD in a Mexican population. Methods : Through allelic discrimination assays, consisting in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) with Taqman® probes, the polymorphisms were genotyped. Genotype frequencies were compared using all inheritance models. results : SNPs were genotyped in 105 patients diagnosed with WAMD (61 women and 44 men, mean age 74.28 ± 8.32 years), and in 102 healthy control subjects (61 women and 41 men, mean age 67.41 ± 5.78 years). Genotypes in both groups were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In all SNPs analyzed, the minor allele frequency was statistically significant different between the groups. Genotypes were not statistically significant different between the WAMD and the control groups (p > 0.05). conclusion : No association was observed between the studied SNPs and the presence of WAMD in the analyzed Mexican population. We consider that further analysis in larger samples is necessary to confirm these findings.

Introduction: Strabismus is one of the main causes of visual disability. Most cases are reversible with appropriate treatment; however, several factors can influence its diagnosis. Objective: To describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of strabismus in children from northern Mexico. Material and methods: We carried out a study to analyze the characteristics associated with strabismus in pediatric patients of a private hospital (Centro Médico Zambrano Hellion [CMZH]) and a primary care center (CeSI). Results: One-hundred and eighty nine patients were included. Median age at strabismus onset was 11 months, with a median age of 3.3 years when attending the clinic for the 1 st time, and the average time to seek medical care was of 13 months. Age of onset was higher in CMZH. However, the time it took patients to seek medical care was higher in CeSI (p < 0.001). The prevalence of amblyopia was significantly higher in CeSI (p = 0.007). Conclusions: This is the first study that describes the clinical and demographic characteristics associated with a diagnosis of strabismus in northern Mexico. Our results agree with other studies in Mexican and American populations. By analyzing the socioeconomic characteristics of the population, we conclude that it is of utmost importance to ensure that low-income population has access to specialized health services in order to receive an appropriate treatment.

Objective: To study the neuroprotective and neuroregenerative response of adult mesenchymal cells (aMSCs) on retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and optic nerve (ON) in an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS) like experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE). Methods: We studied the changes that occurred in the retina and ON, analyzing the effect of an intravenous injection of aMSCs. Three groups were studied: healthy (control), sick (EAE) and sick treated with aMSCs (EAE-MSC). The animals were monitored using motor disability scales. The retinas and ONs were studied with optical microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Results: The results showed that after administration of intravenous aMSCs there was a lower loss of RGC, the average of RGC in the EAE group was of 0.0891 μm compared to 0.166 μm in the EAE-MSC group, with a statistically significant p value (p = 0.01). There was a reduction in the inflammatory cell response of the ON (7.99 cells/μm2 vs. 3.69 cells/μm2, p < 0.0001), a decrease of myelin loss (overall axonal damage was of 54% compared to 88%) and less axonal destruction (0.16745 axons/μm2 vs. 0.3598 axons/μm2 (p = 0.0251). Conclusions: In this study, we found that after the administration of aMSCs there was a lower loss of RGC, a decrease of myelin loss and a lower degree of inflammation in the ON. However, it would be advisable to expand the methodology to ensure an immunosuppressive and neuroprotective effect in this model.

19-year-old male under treatment for bulimia came for sudden decrease of the visual acuity (VA) of the left eye (LE) after an episode of severe vomit. The LE vision was of hand motion and the fundus showed a sub internal limiting membrane (subILM) hemorrhage of 14 disc diameters. We decided to use Nd-YAG laser on the membrane, obtaining the complete drainage of the hemorrhage and immediate recovery of the LE VA (20/20). Conclusion: Nd-YAG laser treatment is recommended for young and active patients in cases of sub-ILM hemorrhage in the context of Valsalva’s retinopathy, due to its effective results

Background: To describe the ultrasound features and disease history of patients with a diagnosis of choroidal detachment evaluated in the Ultrasound Department of the Instituto de Oftalmología “Fundación Conde de Valenciana IAP” of Mexico City from January 2015 to December 2017. Design: Observational, descriptive and retrospective. Methods: All the medical records with a diagnosis of choroidal detachment by ultrasound were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were missing and/or incomplete records. The information obtained was classified by causal disease, type, shape and extension of the choroidal detachment. Results: One hundred and forty-one patients were studied (89 [63.1%] men and 52 [36.9%] women). The average age was 52.92 years in men and 60.98 years in women. Cases related to inflammatory diseases were the most common (76 cases [53.9%]). A total of 102 cases (72.3%) showed a serous choroidal detachment. From all the serous choroidal detachments, 74 cases (52.5%) were observed as flat elevations and 87 cases (61.7%) affected more than six meridians. The average intraocular pressure was 7.63 mmHg. Conclusions: Ultrasound characteristics (shape, type and extension) of choroidal detachments depend on the cause. Flat detachments (mostly inflammatory) show a serous content and extend less than 6 dia-meters, while hemorrhagic detachments (mainly traumatic) tend to be dome-shaped and have a greater extension.

Clinical case: The case concerns a 57-year-old woman who came to the Ophthalmology Emergency Service referred by her dentist after presenting a left periorbital swelling during a root canal treatment. A complete examination only revealed a soft, smooth periorbital tumefaction, crackling on palpation, with no associated inflammation. No radiological examinations were performed. Discussion: Subcutaneous emphysema has been described as a rare complication in the usual dental practice. Periorbital involvement is exceptional and usually has a good prognosis. In this paper, we describe a new case, reviewing the literature on the subject, analyzing the pathophysiology of the process and the changes in its epidemiology. Furthermore, recommendations for their management are established.
